Seriously? He squibbed it at least three times! Two of the incidents were particularly galling, and I'd be happy to never see him play for Melbourne again. And then there's the fact he makes poor decisions, and even when he makes decent decisions, he generally can't execute. Doesn't go when it's his turn, and plays like he doesn't believe he belongs. Anyway... Hunt's injured, but wasn't playing well anyway. Hibberd into the side, please. Spargo's game was a bit of a horror show, but it was just an exaggerated example of his weaknesses - can't hold tackles and doesn't have goal nous. Also isn't quick, and isn't a marking option either (no surprise, given he's tiny). Melksham into the team, thanks. I'd also drop JKH. I'd play Hannan if his knee has actually improved. Otherwise, I rate Kent over JKH. EDIT: Pedo is a funny one, because I'm not sure why we have him in addition to playing Frost and OMac as KPDs. I'm not sold on AVB, but he took his chances and there's a limit to how many changes you can make while expecting a win. Edited August 12, 2018 by Rogue 1 Quote

Pates 9,697 Posted August 12, 2018 Posted August 12, 2018 Hunt goes after his injury, he was disappointing anyway but I feel he would’ve been given a go next week anyway. Spargo needs to be dropped IMO, his 2nd half of the year hasn’t been good and tonight was the final chance he gets. He’ll be back but he needs time at Casey. Melksham and Hibberd should be back which we desperately need. Hibberd’s class in the back line and Melksham’s delivery into 50 would’ve got us over the line vs Swans. I’m sure of it. 2 Quote
D4Life 2,584 Posted August 12, 2018 Posted August 12, 2018 After reading lots of comments and reflecting on the game, there were many reasons we lost: 1. Shocking kicking for goal, missed 6-8 set shots from 20-35 metres, all from not difficult angles, not under tackling pressure. 2. Team looked too big, with Pedersen in, am sure he was picked with Buddy in mind and Max sore, but it backfired. 3. Hunt picked when not ready. 4. Spargo cooked, there was a period earlier in year he should have been rested. Give him another preseason and he will be much better for it. 5. Jones was really poor. Did seem to just jog around the ground first three quarters. Even last quarter kicks inspirational goal, then ordinary disposal at other key times. 6. Add JKH and AVB struggle at the level. 7. Garlett wasn’t on, maybe due to Swans being great at closing small forwards down. 8. ANB disposal poor today. 9. Was Swans last gasp, lose today and it was season over! They played like it. Still I weigh it all up, we lose by under ten points, after blowing our early ascendancy, almost half team well down on form, so not a surprise we lost. This week assuming Hibberd and Melksham good to go, both come in and if Kent played well in VFL, he also comes in. Out Hunt injured, Pedo (he is either in as a key position player, otherwise is too slow), Spargo. A few others lucky to hold spots, JKH and AVB who stays for kicking key goals, he got slaughtered by Alir, but shouldn’t have been playing on him! 1 Quote

Someone mentioned he is low on confidence??! He kicked 4.1 last week. In the same way our record against top teams has been woeful, I’d love to know Hogan’s record against top and bottom teams. Quote

Pates 9,697 Posted August 12, 2018 Posted August 12, 2018 Out: Hunt (Inj), Spargo, Pederson In: Hibberd, Kent, Melksham Despite the result we were accurate goal kicking away from winning. We played stupid football and the frustrating thing is that we only lost by 9 points. I don’t know if that says more about them or us. Spargo needs a rest or to be dropped, he put in a shocker and it’s time. Pederson goes for balance. I’m desperate for us to win next week, I really don’t want it to come down to the final round....again. ? 1 1 Quote
Dee Zephyr 19,322 Posted August 12, 2018 Posted August 12, 2018 Out : Hunt (inj?) Spargo, Pedersen In: Melksham, Hibberd, Kent/Hannan Hibbo and Melksham put in a solid training session Saturday morning. They were out on the track before the main group and continued to train hard well after the group was gone. Intense running exercises and ball skills. From that observation they seem ready to go. I’d give Garlett one more go. At least he looked dangerous in a small patch during the last quarter. He seemed switched on for a few minutes albeit too late but was taken off just when I thought he could cause some damage. Instead Spargo was kept on and was struggling to kick over a jam tin. 1 Quote

It's not happening. Not for PR reasons, not for team spirit/morale reasons, not for unwanted distraction reasons. If that troubles you, then the solution is that Jones shouldn't be captain in 2019, so that we don't have this issue next year. 2 1 Quote
Jaded No More 68,976 Posted August 12, 2018 Posted August 12, 2018 I hope Jones is injured. I really do. Otherwise his decline is the fastest one I’ve ever seen, and I fear he won’t get to enjoy our success at this rate. 1 Quote
buck_nekkid 6,103 Posted August 12, 2018 Posted August 12, 2018 I would say on the chopping block: pedo, Hunt, JKH, avb spargo playing injured? Max and Hogan down but probably retain Jones, ANB, Garlett who could come up? kent, Bugg, Weids, Kielty, josh Wagner?? Back from injury? milky and hibbo We are easy to beat at big grounds. Spread harder, get lots of uncontested marks, find the player free because the lazy Melbourne player has not pushed back to cover. Fix this, everything changes Quote

We have choked majorly each of the past 3 seasons and he's been a catalyst. Need to make tough decisions. He may well stay as captain but we'll continue to turn to water so long as he is top 22. Can anyone tell me what Pederson's job was? I was watching on TV which means you get to see what's happening where the ball is but not much else. I know he started in defence, but doing what? I can only assume he was picked because the Match Committee thought that Gawn might not make it through the game. Whatever the reason, I can't see how we can keep him in the side along with the other talls. It juyst slows us down too much. So, I think he has to go along with Spargo who appears to have hit the wall. Melksham and Hibberd are obvious ins if fit. If Hunt is injured, he'll need to be replaced, too. However, although he had a poor gamer, if he's not injured, he should stay. He's been out of the side for a while and should be given another game. But, if he has to go out either Kent or Hannan come in and Fritsch goes to the backline or Wagner comes in. Quote
Red and Blue realist 2,063 Posted August 13, 2018 Posted August 13, 2018 I think we need to play a tagger on Jeremy McGovern, assuming he plays back - and if he goes forward then have a tall go to him!!! But early in the game against Port they did well with Johnson playing directly on him, while a fair bit smaller Johnson matched him going up for marks and also getting in his way when he was trying to come across and intercept. I'd like to bring Hannan in for this role, given he's a good mark and has speed as well. Ins: Hannan (just to play on McGovern); Melk and Hibberd Outs: Hunt; Spargo and Peds Quote
Die Hard Demon 1,224 Posted August 13, 2018 Posted August 13, 2018 Out: Garlett, Spargo, Hunt In: Bugg, Melksham, Hibberd Bugg has been incredibly consistent for Casey. Deserves a call-up. Unlike Garlett, knows how to lay a tackle. Quote

whatwhat say what 23,875 Posted August 13, 2018 Posted August 13, 2018 are melksham and hibberd certainties to come back in? hamstrings and quads don't tend to be less than 3 and 6-8 weeks respectively, so i personally doubt whether they are ready with four mainstays of the afl side missing, our depth is really being shown up as shallow on the presumption the former peptiders are good to come back... IN: hibberd, kent, melksham OUT: spargo, pedersen, hunt (injured) if they're not fit, could we see... IN: kent, bugg, wagner OUT: spargo, pedersen, hunt (injured) that's....not ideal 1 Quote
