I have the answer to fixing the AFL.

We are saying we have to much congestion.

This is to seeing as much as 50 free kicks a game. This is ridiculous. This allows player time to congregate around the ball all game.

Instead of adding rules, I say take some rules away.

1. Allow players to push in back. Let the players show strength.

2. Abolish the high tackle and implement a dangerous tackle. Allow players to tackle like rugby players.

3. Any player can go up in the ruck except centre bounces. If a team chooses to throw 3 up in the ruck, well there will be 3 opposition players ready to receive.

4.Allow front on contact. What a fickle rule.

This allows umpires to really concentrate on chopping arms and holding the man. (You really must be holding the jumper.)

This will stop frustration in fans with contentious decisions.

Only 15 free kicks a game will allow a fast flowing game.

Fans will see bash, crash beautiful game with out a whistle stopping the game all the bloody time

Makes it easier for umpires and stops interpretation.

Everyone is a winner.

The best game of umpiring I’ve ever seen was Melb v Adel last year in Adelaide. One of the starting umpires got injured early in the game and was replaced by the emergency who promptly got injured himself. This meant there was one less umpire on the ground than normal for much of the game. The result was only the blatantly obvious frees were paid which allowed the game to flow and at no stage we’re you sitting there thinking “BUT YOU PAID THAT FOR THEM YOU MAGGOT!”.

Frees paid in that game we’re 21 to 16 which doesn’t seem much lower than normal, just the frees were definitely there and no tiggy touch wood ones were paid.

Just make it no rules and play the AFLW and AFL together but in the nude. Also allow weapons.

The problem with the game is clearly the ball. Everyone wants to get it. That causes congestion. When it goes over the fence, we waste time getting it back, slowing the game down considerably. When it gets grubby, the umpire has to wipe it on the ground to clean it. 

The players chase it all over the place causing unsightly groups of players running around, detracting from the spectacle of the game. 

If there were no ball in the game, there'd be a much faster, free flowing game, very little congestion, far fewer free kicks to adjudicate and it would bring spectators, disheartened by the direction the game is going, back to the game. 

As an added bonus, it would stop Collingwood cheer squad members stealing the ball. 

Instead of using a ball, to score, players could just run up and down the ground touching the goal post to score a goal. Whichever team can do that the most in a certain period of time, wins the game.

Why didn't someone come up with this idea sooner? I see no flaws in it.

I think they should put bunkers/sand traps on all flanks, that way you can only use the corridor and fasten the game up down the middle

I have not been able to watch full games in one sitting for years now, and have to watch most on replay so I can slow or speed up, as needs be, to workout whats happening and why.

The game does not suit older people as their eye sight changes... either at the game, or on TV.

 

* We can't see which player is playing where, or on who. 

* The AFL commission needs at least one commissioner over the age of 58 Yrs.....  to represent those the younger commissioners do not understand.

* The TV stations ought to sack any commentators who want to chat amongst themselves instead of calling the play...  and cutout the condescending explanations of the games hidden points.

* put some non player commentators in place who are in awe of the game,,, instead of past players and their EGO's....

*  remove 2 players from the interchange bench, over a 2 year period.

* Stop missing the centre bounces with mindless replays.

The biggest 'problem' with the look of the game is that the games that get the most looks - the ones on Channel 7 at prime time - have been horrible (eg. Carlton).

Agree. There is a whole generation of older people (me included) who cannot watch the current game.

As for actually attending a game, not interested. Pre game rubbish is too American. Dozens and dozens of ex players pretending to be experts on the ground pre match and at breaks shoving a microphone in anybody’s face that will let them. Crap.

Then to cap it off we have social engineering messages rammed down our throats on the scoreboard!!

So either way the game has lost me. I’m not watching on TV or paying to attend games.

Exactly. We are a generation that has time(kids are grown up) and have $$ to attend games or subscribe to Foxtel.

I do neither because they have “butchered the game” and the overall experience.

Very true, going to the footy itself is not half as good as it was before all the 'hoodoo' that exists today. A pie, maybe a hot dog, a thermos, a few beers, the anticipating 'hum' of the expectant crowds - no matter which teams were playing - the civil nature of the community of spectators, emphasising tolerance, a piddle at half-time with polite strangers, a quick smoke or two, no razzle, dazzle or imposed focus on irrelevant 'crowd entertainment', and better umpiring. The only real benefit of 'being there' is receiving a live view of your team in order to assess, speculate, understand, interpret and respect their efforts. Hey, you could even get a return train fare, ground entrance and a seat, the mandatory football nutrition and liquid refreshments, a Footy Record and a bag of hot jam doughnuts after the game for the walk to Richmond Station amongst friends - all for less than $25! Take us back, Gil because secretly, we are still all living the dream.

There is no pre game hum or feel, it's just screaming advertising and associated rubbish over the PA system.

Spot on! In earlier, real football days, the hum and atmospheric feel was an absolute pleasure with which to interact or just merely soak up.

That’s why I go to the local football instead. The player’s skills aren’t as good but the game and the day out is much more enjoyable.

Why don't the coaches just get it over with and remove all players and play the game as computerised fantasy football. No bad bounces, no flaky umpiring, no injuries or other real world inconveniences. Just pure football strategy and without user interaction the computer can play the entire match in a split second. Leaving only the press conference at the end.

Knockout idea! Turning up early for the Reserves grade game, settling into the atmosphere, information in abundance about the players to move into the next level, decent umpiring ... another opportunity for an early meat pie with sauce to complement the one you have just before the start of the main game ... all good!
