Popular belief is it's either Tyson for Hannan or no change.

I'd prefer no change and keep Hannan in for pace he's also our 5th leading goalkicker with 16.

Tyson only average's only 2.4 clearances a game.

Who would you prefer against the Cats?

It's not that clear cut. Tyson is unarguably a better footballer, but Hannan fits our team better at the moment. 

Tyson "only" averages 2.4 clearances this year because he's been played out of position on a wing. If he played in the centre to replace Viney he'd rack up clearances like he used to, as he's a good inside midfielder. With Viney going down, he may be called upon to play in his natural position where he can thrive. 

Hannan is struggling recently. He's still chiming in with a goal every week, but he's really not impacting games. He just doesn't lay enough tackles or contribute to enough goals. There are others that could perform his role better on form.

I'd actually be keen to bring Bugg in to play Hannans forward role. Bugg lays more tackles, wins more hard ball, gets to more contests, generates more scoring shots, is part of more scoring chains, and has the versatility to play tagger/midfield/back pocket also. Don't mind his pest attitude too, that sort of niggle and hardness will be useful come finals time. He should be in the team IMO.

Give Trac more midfield time and let him be the grunt.

for starters, tyson has no 'grunt'. but as travis said above, tyson can come in and perform in our midfield group. i love hannan, but am a sucker for an enigmatic player (hi jeff!).. not sure that we can consistently play with hannan, garlett, spargo & ANB in our fwd 50. bit flakey for mine. love having hannan in for cameos though.

also, has anyone noticed that hannan hasn't taken a speccie in ages?

Hanson over Tyson for me. I just think it would be harder for the Cats to find a match.

Geelong have a good mid field, but they aren't quick. Tyson isn't a clearance machine, but he can find the footy which will be important against the Geelong engine room.

I'm torn, I don't think Hannan did enough to keep his spot, but Tyson just hasn't performed thus season.

 

If it’s between the two it’s going to depend solely on wether Goodwin wants Petracca with more mid time or forward.

I would suggest Bernie will be once again be under question. Was very slow again on the weekend and Joel Smith could be a good physical match up for Menzel.

Guthrie, Kelly and Duncan are all fleet of foot and are strong power runners. 

I'm really not sure Tyson will help us given we clearly have no issues at the coal face. 

Hannan offers variety and is an awkward match up defensively because he can take contested grabs and is quick when the ball is in dispute. 

The only thing that worries me & especially in such an important game ...it seems to take a half at least for that VFL player to pick up the pace of  the game ..i.e. JKH last week.  Different if you’ve only been down there for a week or two (Vince) ..Tyson has spent a fair chunk in the VFL & his first game back was pretty ordinary but better the following week......Spargo was definitely much better against the Bulldogs than Freo.....not sure if we can afford that this week ?

Bernie is an interesting one. He’s definitely slowing down but from Goody’s presser this morning it sounds like he’s keeping his spot this week.

Goodwin: We were really pleased with Bernie Vince last week. He’s a winner and competes.

I felt it as a tale of two halves for our mids last week.  Yes, they were dominant in that second half (especially the 3rd quarter), but the depth of the Doggies' mids is nowhere near what Geelong will bring Saturday night.  If they play well, Ablett/Danger/Selwood can kill us, but the issue for them is that they haven't really played well together at all this year.

Oliver is more than likely going to cop a hard tag from S Selwood, so the result of that match up will go a long way in telling us what the outcome of the game will be.

We are going to need our defenders to play a big game here.  If we can limit the damage of Hawkins and Menzel, and rebound the best we ever have, then I think we will win.

So in answer to the OP, I think we need to add to our midfield depth for this game.  If Hannan can play well, I'd stay with him because he has got pace, can mark overhead, hit a target by foot and hit the scoreboard from limited opportunities.  If Hannan doesn't play well, then he's a liability for this game.

Amazing, this is one of the first times this season I've been hoping Billy Stretch was available!

What about Danger and Jesus? Not to mention Kelly and Duncan?

Hannan is a very useful 'on bench' forward when run is needing to be revitalised in the third quarter - and periodically in the last quarter, with the added advantage of taking that 'speccy' mark and his quick decisions to shoot at goal when opportunities arise. He is among our most consistent scorers in that regard.

Lewis out. Vince, perhaps on Danger, again, as a tagger. Harmes might tag Joel S well for a while but should rotate with Jones. Selwood will slow as the game progresses and Jones can keep him out of the way.  Rolling Clarrie forward will assist with his hard-ball gets and might free a tag from Geelong.

Not sure I can agree with this statement. Even with Max dominating the hitouts, the Bulldogs still had 39 clearances to our 30 for the game.

Yes agree on Harmes He has palyed well for a few games now

For the majority of the year, we've been stronger in that area than most other sides. The Collingwood game and doggies game may be exceptions. 

We brought Tyson in after the Collingwood debacle and he had a whopping 3 stoppage clearances and 16 touches against Port. 

He is a 'bit' player. His inclusion will not be the difference. 

Given up on Tyson.

His strengths are possessed by others vying for the same positions that don’t have as many weaknesses.

Valuable commodity for the trade period however.

I remember when the kid first came to the club and many of us labeled him a Rolls Royce and the second coming of Judd.

Upon review, it really just highlights how poor our midfield was back then.

Play our own game: Ablett, Danger (if tagged) and Selwood are amazing but slow. Duncan is the scary one for mine, can rack them up with speed. 

Need Gawn to be creative with the taps so that the conventional mid-field clash is negated. 

ANB, JKH and a speedy Garlett in the middle, breaking away to receive an unorthodox tap might just counter them.

Shall be an interesting matchup!

Is  he a better footballer? Hannan hasn't had a great year but his positioning, disposal and smarts are generally well above Tyson's. I find Tyson to be a liability in an already slow team that can't afford poor field kicking and the lack of peripheral vision of Tyson, who seems to get run down 2-3 times a game. I swear sometimes he seems to be playing with a cardboard taped to sides of his head.

He has elite attributes, and has been elite in certain games where he has been able to eliminate mistakes from his game and his mobility hasn’t been exploited, but he’s only suited to a central midfield role and we are blessed to have candidates for the same spots that appear to be true elites of the competition.

Nice kid, works hard and has done some good things for the club, but there aren’t many fairytales in footy. Not in the traditional sense. Getting paid millions to play footy in your early 20s is pretty damn lucky, even if you have to spread it across a handful of clubs.

I know I’m engaging in the ugly practice of writing the obituary to his MFC career, but I just can’t see him sticking around beyond this season.
