Good lord! It’s hard to watch footy these days. 3 of the worse fifty metre penalties paid to Geelong late in the game had a massive impact in the outcome. 2 for infringes where the players were trying to exit the area and one where the players did not hear the whistle. What a disgrace the officiating is. 

And meanwhile, wtf has happened to Hannebery? Looks like a 50 yo out there!

    The umpiring and the 50m penalties being handed out on a platter are just disgraceful, non sensical and ruining the game. The umpires appear clueless and handing out penalties contrary to common sense and fair play. 

    Just disgraceful and a blight on the game.

    They`ve been a bit up n down this year but they`ll come good at the business end. Cam Smith is an absolute genius...hope he plays til he`s 40, I have a feeling they`ll crumble when he retires.

    What a great match that was. Im an AFL tragic but it gives you a good indication of the state of our game when I`d rather watch Rugby League

    That shakes things up.

    If we'd won last week we could have leapfrogged Sydney with a win last week, potentially WC and may well have ended the round in 2nd. Highest we can end the round is 6th and equal on points with as low as 10th.

    Maybe the club can run a virtual ladder in change rooms- if we'd beaten Geelong and Syd we'd be...might be a bit demoralising but not as demoralising as r23-2017. And being an mfc supporter of course where every year is a virtual ladder year (coping mechanism)

    I see your point, but my point is that at this point in the season we have to expect teams like Geelong to beat teams like Sydney. This only makes it tighter, and a win last week would have give us breathing room. Maybe referring to ladder position wasn't the best way to make my point, but I was just trying to highlight how costly losses like last week are. It's a carbon-copy of the North loss(es) last year.

    Watched parts of the game last night, quite a disgusting spectacle, even putting aside the ups paying multiple cheap frees to duck wood and ablett, the level of congestion and rugby style scrums made it awful to watch. Personally I blame terry Wallace ... that flooding tactic way back in 2000 started this all!

    My love of the MFC is enough to trump my belief the AFL engineers outcomes.

    I don't think you have to believe in a planned conspiracy to bribe the umpires to see 'rigging' in the AFL.  The umpires are human (yes, it's true) and pick up the AFL's vibe about TV revenue, favoured teams with large memberships etc and it is likely to affect them. We all know how susceptible they are to crowd noise in WA, so it would be foolish to think they are not susceptible to other influences.

    And that is pretty much my view. It's not like the Serie A where blatant match fixing occurred, but subtle influences that still have quite an impact when accumulated.

    Rampe stated in an article during the week that the Swans “ Walk Taller” with him in the side. 

    In that slugfest last night his tackle count was 0 and struggled big time to get to contests. Injuries could be the major reason for his decline and if it’s true that we are interested in him, that’s a major gamble by us imo.

    I actually saw, in last night's game, a contest where four players, two from each side went up in a marking contest, and a good young player by the name of TIm Mc Cartin took a great mark and i think he kicked a goal.

    The thing that attracted my attention most, was that i think they all tried to mark, not one player in that contest tried to spoil. Wasn't that lovely and did anyone else notice?

    And there you have one of the major reasons why so many people don't love their footy as much as they used to and so many former players refuse to watch the game anymore.

    I now find myself watching our games and barely a few minutes of a couple of other games each week.

    I only watch Dees games. No intetest in other games but  not because of umpiring. The game is just full of scrums and with all players constantly at one end of the ground. It is just unattractive.

    Being old and sad, I still watch whatever free to air games are on and I can tell you that you are only missing more examples of umpiring that cause me to tear out my few remaining hairs.  And the game gets uglier week by week.  I won't comment on the commentators......

    Who do we hope wins out of Essendon and Collingwood (in the hopeful event we win):

    Do we want Essendon to win and therefore only be a game and a better percentage behind Collingwood? With the knowledge that Collingwood have a quite difficult draw with lots of injuries?

    Or do we want Collingwood to win and virtually put Essendon out of business, and therefore one less side to worry about taking our spot.

    Tigers should win tonight and if they do, they will tie the record for most consecutive wins at the MCG. Damn shame, that’s our record.

      Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide.       There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

      Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors.
