In regards to Carlton. I have a close friend who’s a one-eyed Blue. He has been optimistic about his club and went as far as saying last year his team would be pushing for finals in 2019. He contacted me last night to say he’s finally conceded and can’t see a way out for his once proud club. Clearly disappointed with recruiting, coaching/game plan and just about everything else.

No doubt a few of us had similar thoughts during our dark days but how many players on the Carlton list would you take to play at the MFC? Cripps and C Curnow would be the only 2 right now and maybe a fit Docherty but according to Gil it’s an exciting list that deserved multi prime time fixtures. I’m not sure getting rid of Bolton will fix anything down there.

The AFL will put their foot down and umpires will crack down hard on defenders infringing on forwards and plenty of 50 metre penalties from the midfield. There will be a mandated target of at least 25 goals scored depending on both sides kick reasonably straight. As a last resort Channel 7 will engineer in intermittent broadcast interruptions so that they can sneak in a few commercials.

I'm of the belief that a coach still has a fair say in the outcome of his own list DZ - even though the recruiting technically falls into the area of others.  Even if it's to just give direction to the recruiters & spotters about the type of player that will suit his game plan. 

One of the mistakes that Carlton has made is taking the GWS failed draft picks ... most clubs tend to stay too long with their own said picks believing that the standout junior form will shine through eventually - of course,  a lot of times it doesn't and clubs eventually cut their losses.

Bolton has to rubber-stamp recruiting decisions as he would know that the buck stops with himself.  One could argue that the most important people within a club are the recruiting people and to me that's a joint effort (coach included) 

Carlton have bottomed out list wise and they need some fresh ideas.  We've had to do it at Melbourne at least 3 times in the recent past and each time it was with new sets of eyes.

Lynch's worth can help in this way. they'll get a couple of early picks and also some oldies.

 

Agree he may be far more value gone than staying and the AFL will give them even more.

I think he is referring to the untested but widely believed mantra that you "have to get games into the kids" and "get them games as a group". Because that's what top clubs have done.

Has anyone considered that top clubs have players who've played a lot together as a group because they're good players and don't get dropped? That the cart in fact comes after the horse?

That was Bailey's idea: no one over 25, get games into the kids as a group. Wait ... then voila! Something magical happens along the journey and ... flag!!!

And what did they learn, those kids playing together as a group? First, how to get the sh*t kicked out of them more often than is healthy. They certainly didn't learn a game plan or how to win. Second, because the club is committed to "the group", you don't get dropped.

(By the way: not trying to bag Dean. He was good guy with our best interests at heart but it just didn't work out.)

Not a recipe for a good culture. In the end we got an injection of culture with Roos and Jackson. Also Cross, Vince, Lewis. If people who know what to do can show other people what to do, there's a fair chance they'll catch on and do it too.

Carlton are trying this Bailey plan. But they're getting Neeld results. They're learning how to never kick 100 points. How to avoid thrashings (hah!) while never attacking themselves. How to be dejected and beaten by half time.

Funny, we copied CFC's tanking blueprint and it was fool's gold. That taught the rest of the football world that tanking for picks isn't worth it.

Now CFC are copying the MFC Bailey plan and it is reaping worse results than Bailey got. They are slow learners.

We must win next week. Huge game for our finals chances. Clubs on our heels, the Hawks, Pies, GWS and North are playing all bottom feeders next week. Upsets do not look likely. Only the Lions against GWS have a reasonable chance.

Carlton made the mistake of appointing a bloke who knew a sh$% load about tactics, but that he wanted to Coach as well.

The hierarchy just wanted to be always able to put their two bobs worth in as well. You know like always..........

I knew Carlton were going to get thumped yesterday when I saw the roof was closed at Etihad and five of their players were wearing long sleeve jumpers.

Haha. For some reason that stadium is freezing even with the roof closed, must be how the wind drafts up through it, even on a sunny day it’s bloody cold. But yes, blues are depleted and soulless 

if Carlton can't recruit any big names, they need to target players such as Tyson.

Not a bad game at the G so far. Geelong dominating centre clearances and getting no reward due to a well drilled Richmond defence.

Can't see anyone beating Richmond come finals time at the 'G. Hate to say it but they'll go back to back. I might put $100 on them now to ease the pain.

Our game against Port is huge. Win it and we'll be a game and percentage clear of Geelong and Port, as well as North and Hawthorn (assuming both win next week).

Lose it, and percentage will be all that keeps us in the 8 (as I would predict Collingwood to beat Carlton, Hawthorn to beat GC and North to beat the Dogs, making all of those clubs 8-5, and Port will move to 9-4). A GWS win over Brisbane would have them only a draw behind us too.

It is so, so tight from 4th to 10th. With Hawthorn's easier fixture and GWS potentially improving form, getting the points against Port will go a long way to giving us the confidence and breathing space that we're going to need to hold our finals spot.

North play two games a year at the G. I reckon that one counted as having home ground advantage.

It's also no one's fault but ours that we sold the Adelaide home game to Alice Springs.
