    For those too young to recall, the clear sentiment on here around 2011/12, when we applied, was that if Melbourne of that era didn't qualify for a priority pick, no-one ever would. So just get rid of the pretence of having them. Then Brisbane, who'd played finals only a few years before, got given one the following year.

    They need what the AFL gave us - parachute in proper leadership.

    That's what turned us around, not picks.

    If the same test is applied to Carlton that was applied to us, then the Blues have no chance.  We were denied on the basis that we had good prospects for improvement on our list that were either too young to have had an impact or were injured - such as Mitch Clark.

    The Blue are constantly raving about their quality young list and that it's just a matter of time... I don't think they can have it both ways.

    They traded out their stars for picks, so they can't put their hand out for a priority pick when they've chosen to go with youth.

    The Blues are/were until recently a power club,  the AFL will be far more likely to help them than a club like us.

    So they're list managing again,,, and they want a priority pick on top of that as well.

    In one of the strongest drafts that's been.

    Not on your nelly, blues.

    Remembering of course that Melbourne's grand total priority pick 'haul' was pick 1 and pick 18.

    That's for a period of 9 years with a total of 45 wins. That's just 5 wins a year despite including the brief false dawn of the two 8-win seasons.

    So all but one of Carlton's recent seasons (2014, 4 wins) has been better than our average result over 9 years.

    But we all know this, and we all know that the notion that Carlton can't attract players is a fallacy given that half their list is recycled high draft picks.

    We also know they blatantly tanked and never got held to account for it, so they can get stuffed anyway.

    One final extra note - Brisbane have had a much worse run of results over the last five years anyway, and a lot of that can be put to player retention problems. Should the fact that their team is actually having a proper crack at it and not being quite so embarrassingly flaccid count against them, when percentage earned by trying to play games out is even now the only thing putting them ahead of Carlton?

    Jake Niall definitely gets a goose of the week award.

    It's Carlton.  They get special rules just for them.  Bonus Friday night games, priority picks, immunity from investigation even when one of their coaches comes out and says they tanked to get Kreuzer... 

    I wouldn't be surprised if they wound up with the top three picks this year.

    Murphy will leave as a FA and they will get band 1 compensation giving them pick 2 anyway.

    Couldn't see him being offered a large enough contract to justify anything approaching a top 2 pick for a bloke who will start next season as a 31 year old.

    No actually, it's the AFL. I can see a top 2 pick for sure.

    My recollection is that we were last denied for two reasons, one official and one less so. The first, publicly discussed, was that we'd had a number of close games in 2014, and so were adjudged competitive with some decent young prospects. The second, was that despite it adhering to the AFL free agency formula, our compo for Frawley was deemed sufficient reward, and it would have been a bad look for the league if we were awarded a bonus pick on top.  Mostly, in my mind, it was Roos and co going through the motions to secure concessions in other areas, but 2013 should have been the year - and if we didn't deserve one then, then the bar has been raised to a serious degree. Still, I couldn't care less if the Blues get one or not.

    If Carlton gets preferential treatment by way of a priority pick at the end of the year it will be the final proof of corruption at the top of the AFL.

    We've already been lied to about clubs having to earn those coveted and valuable Friday night fixtures through good performances by virtue of the fact that Carlton has been given heaps of them this year despite finishing 16th in 2017.

    So if you have to establish a case with the AFL to get special consideration over a number of years then how can one club be considered favourably for draft assistance in the same year that it received the honour of a swag of Friday night games?

    I reckon it was getting g fined for not tanking. AFL would've looked stupid and had lots of club kick back if they then handed us a PP.

      A few years ago, the Melbourne Football Club produced a documentary about the decade in which it rose from its dystopic purgatory of regular thrashings to the euphoria of a premiership victory. That entire period could have been compressed in a fast motion version of the 2025 season to date as the Demons went from embarrassing basket case to glorious winner in an unexpected victory over the Dockers last Saturday. They transformed in a single week from a team that put in a pedestrian effort of predictably kicking the ball long down the line into attack that made a very ordinary Bombers outfit look like worldbeaters into a slick, fast moving side with urgency and a willingness to handball and create play with shorter kicks and by changing angles to generate an element of chaos that yielded six goals in each of the opening quarters against Freo.

      Round 7 gets underway in iconic fashion with the traditional ANZAC Day blockbuster. The high-flying Magpies will be looking to solidify their spot atop the ladder, while the Bombers are desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top eight. Later that evening, Fremantle will be out to redeem themselves after a disappointing loss to the Demons, facing a hungry Adelaide side with eyes firmly set on breaking into the top four. Saturday serves up a triple-header of footy action. The Lions will be looking to consolidate their Top 2 spot as they head to Marvel Stadium to clash with the Saints. Over in Adelaide, Port Adelaide will be strong favourites at home against a struggling North Melbourne. The day wraps up with a fiery encounter in Canberra, where the Giants and Bulldogs renew their bitter rivalry. Sunday’s schedule kicks off with the Suns aiming to bounce back from their shock defeat to Richmond, taking on the out of form Swans.Then the Blues will be out to claim a major scalp when they battle the Cats at the MCG. The round finishes with a less-than-thrilling affair between Hawthorn and West Coast at Marvel. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

      For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

    • CASEY: UWS Giants

      The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.
