salary distribution in clubs must be a very hard thing.

Always seems that there is an extra percentage for a good forward over a good backman.

With both Hoges and McDonald in the good forward category I hope we have enough for both not to mention the five or six others that could be touching the $500k mark if not more.

Not sure our forward salary planning for Tom would have seen his relatively meteoric rise in value.

It’s not about whether he stays or goes, it’s just how much and for how long. He’s said he wants to stay (and why wouldn’t he?), and the club clearly needs him. 

Just standard negotiations. I’ve never been less fearful of losing players than I am now.

Good players only leave their club if that club is in Adelaide. McDonald ain’t going anywhere.

Embarrassment of riches...at last 

Apparently Tom Boyd's salary in his first year at the Bulldogs was limited due to AFL rules governing what can be paid to second year players. The result was that they are now paying serious money for a player that is about at the same level as the Weid.

What a recipe for an unhappy list.

Chook.. what about Tom Lynch... they say he is going to get the highest offer ever made... around $1.4M a year

I'd much prefer we're careful with our cap and keep money in the coffers for the likes of Oliver, Brayshaw, Salem and Petracca (midfields win you flags).

Naturally, I'm sure we've looked at our list and positioned our payments in a way to keep Tom, but we may not have envisaged his drastic improvement.

A year ago I would have been happy to let him look elsewhere, but as a forward and wingman he is a star. I wonder if it's a typical MFC moment where a player dominates in a contract year and as soon as it's signed, they start playing lazy footy. We'll see.

If it came down to putting one of our guys on the trade table to keep Tom, it'd be Tyson. I see him on the fringes in the coming 2-3 years, but he would offer a bottom 6 team great value (as he did us in 2014).

I think that's our problem.. he's worth a lot more than he was last month and a very lot more than he was worth at the start of the 2017 season.

Finding the extra dollars has to come at some cost as the money men will have had their expected salary bands well and truly locked in years ahead.

Nice problem to have and is one the successful clubs face regularly.

I don't think McDonald would ask for such a ridiculous amount that it would compromise our future. He is one of our better leaders.

An interesting one.

In a few weeks, he has become one of our most valuable players. One that we can't afford to lose. 

However, we have to have enough money to pay the rest of the team.

Its the dilemma that all top teams face. Realistically, we are probably going to lose one or two along the way and it may hurt.  Players like Hunt and Stretch will probably go if they are not given games. 

However, the lure of success, playing with your mates, playing finals etc is a huge incentive to stay. And Tom has his brother.

He is probably going to be offered more by other clubs, so if Tom chooses to stay, he will be doing so for less. 

A long term deal may be the way to go.

i would imagine if it is back and forth then Tom is in the ballpark, and it may be loading, performance markers and pay, retrigger clauses that could be in play.

otherwise, the ‘message’ and signalling may have been different.

Tom is a smart guy. He'll get the best deal for himself, but he won't leave.
