    Wish Neeldy all the best with whatever he may do.  

    Found him to be very polite, very committed and placed in a position with too much expectation for a first time coach - his face was so expressive I appreciated his honesty. 

    Good footy person - Yet not the best I’ve ever seen at football politics/ football media.

    Mark, a little word of advice... Maybe get a job outside of footy because you have no f$%+ing idea about football. Couldn't coach an u/9's team

    Whilst I am neutral in terms of my personal empathy with Mr Neeld, Essendrug’s gradual unravelling is the gift that keeps on giving. May they go down the gurgler slowly and painfully.

    When a club like Essendon shiz the bed like they have, heads were bound to roll.

    Neeld will be the first scapegoat for season 2018. Probably more to come. Some big issues down at the bombers.

    We all have strengths and weaknesses, and it's unfortunate for Mark that he'll probably be remembered for what he couldn't do rather than what he could.

    Has a real feel of scapegoat here as others have mentioned.

    Not often you see an assistant coach moved on mid season.

    The press release talks of allowing other members of the coaching staff  to have input into the game plan.. sorry that responsibility sits squarely with the head coach and head of Football.

    Agreed totally. 

    As for Neeld, hard to know why they sacked him. I mean it screams of scapegoating. But then he basically brought our entire club to the brink of footy extinction so who knows. 

    Thank [censored] we are no longer the biggest mess in the AFL.

    Have to feel a bit sorry for this bloke. His football career is effectively over. The vitriol that is coming from the immature children on this forum is palpable, just as it was when he departed from Melbourne. Please keep in mind when you are commenting that his family will also be affected by this.

    This couldn't have been bought about by their 2 and 6 start to the year exclusively and its relevance to the tactics he was advocating.

    I'm not sure that I have seen an assistant coach get sacked mid season like this. If anyone can remember if they can, please tell me as this seems like a first in my 30 years of following AFL/VFL footy.

    How these things usually go is that assistants usually get till the end of the year to make their case and then their position is usually put up for review. The reason being is that rarely ever will they get singled out in the way a senior bloke is. The head coach has his face all over the media and is often the fall guy (fair or not) when a team is in a slump.

    To not even be given the chance to lift his game when he is flying under the radar as an assistant says to me that something happened in the last little bit that made his situation completely untenable.

    The bit about him moving into a job outside footy says that after this, even if he wanted a job in coaching or recruiting, he had no chance of getting another footy job thanks to the legacy of this sacking (combined with his sacking at Melbourne). It also maybe it's him realizing that despite his best hopes, the evidence before him is telling him that he is no good at this caper. If so it shows a sense of self awareness that seemed completely absent when he was coaching us.

    Essendon shouldn't and will not divulge all the gory details as to why this happened but it would have been intriguing to have been a fly on the wall. More info might come out but it seems that they are trying to treat him like PJ did when he realized he couldn't do his job.

    I thought Mark was paying us back by going to Essendon. He finally did his bit for the club by becoming their match day tactician. That appointment by the way proves the entire club was on drugs about the time when he was coaching us. How could they not see it?

    Montgomery a few years ago... may have been end of season perhaps.... philosophical/ego differences from Bevo.

    "It’s believed that aside from John Worsfold, Rob Harding (game intelligence and opposition strategy coach) and Neeld, no assistants were permitted to discuss specific strategy and tactics with the senior coach or players.

    This extended to game day in the coaches’ box, with almost every suggestion regarding a heavily criticised game plan funnelled through Neeld.

    This alienated other assistants Mark Harvey, James Kelly, Paul Corrigan and Hayden Skipworth.

    On several occasions, at least one of the assistants who was not allowed to discuss strategy or tactics, had to discreetly tell the runner messages behind Worsfold and Neeld’s backs in order to get their message out there.

    Ultimately, the structure didn’t work and Neeld was moved on — the scapegoat in a system that had broken down".

    It is a terrible structure and process to channel everything through one person and keep other assistants out of the loop but Neeld didn't put the structure in place - that is a Football department decision.

In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants.       There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.
