If he wants to come back home for money then I don't think we're ahead.  You would expect the Saints, North (who have tried to poach anybody with two legs over the last couple of years) and Carlton to have more money to give.  The Bombers wouldn't have a whole lot of wriggle room and us, well, we must have something to spare lying around.

However, if he wants to come home to potentially win a flag, then the decision at the moment is a no brainer.  Three of the mentioned clubs are absolute poo and going nowhere fast, while North are batting above their average, just like Mick Martyn did with any woman he  dated in his lifetime.

If we can offer him competitive money then we're a mile in front of all the clubs mentioned.  I still think he's more likely to sign with the Eagles but I'd like to think we're a sneaky chance of nabbing him as well.

He is talking about the points system given to each draft number. Our first round pick last year (pick 10) plus our first round pick this year (say pick 11) minus the second rounder they give back to us = pick five.

PS. I may have missed another piece

PPS. I’m just happy they reckon we will have some salary cap space left!

Thanks for the numerical explanation fnd

The draft is a gamble enough as it is. Reducing it to a points system reduces it's credibility further imo

I'll beg to differ on this thread. I reckon Gaff is a waste of time. A soft outside player who isn't overly quick. Never liked him.

Except he's been playing more inside this season and killing it. Stepped up a level. Just what Goody wants, adaptable players. Have you watched him this year?

Would finish off our midfield perfectly....unless he wants $1 million per season we'd have to be the front runners as the other clubs on that list are miles off any real success

(Reckon we are a genuine chance)

I tend to agree. It all depends on whether its about money or success. If it's just about the money he'll go to the highest bidder and that won't be us. If he wants to come home to chase a flag we'll have to have a good showing this year to entice. If we miss the finals we might not be able to lure him in.

You could say that about the whole Eagles team ATM. I have watched a little bit of the eagles this year and over previous years and I have not changed my mind on Gaff. He is 27 or 28 and we have enough players of his ilk such as ANB and Harmes which we don't have to pay a fortune for. He can stay at the eagles for all I care.

Okay, let's get this straight.

He is 25 years old, turning 26 next month.

And if you rate him on par with ANB or Harmes then I'd challenge your comment of "watching a little bit of the Eagles."

If ANB or Harmes turn out to be as good as Gaff I'd be very, very surprised.

Not sure how you can draw that conclusion di4e.  Harmes and ANB are solid foot-soldiers ....... Gaff is a match-winner, and would take our midfield work and forward entries to a brand new level.

So .. I assume it's trade Tyson for a draft pick thus freeing up some of the salary needed to pay Gaff?

If we can do that and keep everyone happy... I like it.

Don't like that horrible word "window" but we are definitely entering that "window phase."

Would need to trade Tyson for a pick and have Vince retire to be able to afford Gaff.

If we add him to our already superb, deep and ultra talented midfield we would be unstoppable.

Jackson said we still have enough money to bye 1 more gun. I would go for Sloane before Gaff but it would be great to get either of them.

Sloane has been a Ranger, sure but he is getting just a little past his best these days ... injuries, solid bumps and tackles, decreases in speed and directional changes ... whereas Gaff has those things we need and should keep giving for a few years yet.

It would seem to be the case, if we had him. We also need a backline tyrant of the physically unstoppable variety, with good kicking skills and a brain. ( ie: a Rod Grinter type) I'd reckon we could get by with the youngies that we have now, once they mature and further develop in the game, should Gaff not be available for our midfield acquisitions. For example, Oliver and Brayshaw may well develop to a point where both of them are better than Gaff ever was - if not pressing for that status right now. Once Lewis and Vince - both mindful of the Club and its needs onfield - cannot keep playing, sure - Gaff would be more than handy.

From a financial point you would think that with Lewis and Vince likely on front loaded contracts and bound to both be retired by 2020, there is wiggle room there.

Also consider we're likely trading out to get him, so expect a Tyson, Garlett, ANB, Kent to all be on the trade table.

Cant think of many if any A graders that have gone to bottom of the table teams.  although they get more money when they leave they always go to a team with at least decent change of a flag in the next few years

Gaff is having a great year and much of what I didn't like last year he's addressed, so I'm all on board.

Unlike Wise, I'd be surprised if he stays with West Coast.  It's just a gut feel.  Them playing well might make it harder for him to leave though.

If he did leave he'd perfectly top off our list.  I also reckon we'd be close to the top of his wish list.  Play at Etihad every second week, or play at the G where you used to go to as a kid to watch your beloved Demons ?

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
