Won't be happening, sounds good from our end but would anyone from the Eagles swap Gaff for Kelly? I'd say no, so there'd be no way they'd do that deal, unless Gaff changed his mind and was now desperate to return to Vic. There's nothing to suggest that West Coast need to cough up a good player to get Kelly, they have signed Nic Nat on a reduced deal and Kenedy is nearly finished so his wage has dropped, they might lose a few fringe players, like the tigers have over the last few years but don't need to move on any of their god players to make it happen - unfortunately because the above has merit from our end.

Kelly has become a more damaging player than Gaff and is several years younger.

If I was an Eagles supporter I would swap the two in a heartbeat.

There's a fair emotional investment in Gaff from their supporters, so they might not be as accepting of it as you think. Plus as I said, the Eagles are going after Kelly without having to move on any bigger name players, so if I was one of their supporters then I'd be wanting both.

Maybe worth moving back Andy?

With Kelly wanting to get to the the Eagles, can we be the conduit to allow that to happen with pick 2??

At a basic level:

MFC trade pick 2 to WCE

WCE give us Gaff and 13

WCE trade pick 2 to GFC

Kelly lands at Eagles

West Coast need to cough up a good player to land Tim Kelly and the only way I can see it happening is to offload a similarly handy player who might see a move back east as having merit.

I understand Gaff signed long term at the end of last year on the back of a very emotional period for him but as well know it means little given the Brad Hill scenario and countless other contract backflips.

What are people’s thoughts?

I'll allow it.

No brilliance, just on gut feel I don’t agree.

I think Kelly is an impostor.

Agree.

Assuming you mean he is pretending to be an elite AFL player who is arguably the best kick in the league and moves like a panther.

Maybe. I don’t think he’d be half as good in most other sides. I think he’s a cat, and that he benefits heavily from the attention opposition sides put into other Geelong players.

There are of course two aspects if not three to this deal.

First is the trade.Second is the money and third is the go home factor.

Kelly has the go home factor big time.Money should not be an issue because as a young player he will want reasonable money for two years before signing the big contract at 25. Would not see him wanting Gaff like money or even half of it to move. Of course Geelong might try and egg the pudding by making him an offer that is hard to refuse.

The trade is the hard part. Interesting suggestions here. I see merit in Geelong trading for a high (1-5) draft pick rather than a medium player and a pick 16.

If we can benefit from the "mess" great.

Fascinating

West Coast’s window is barely ajar now imo.

Kennedy broken and on last legs.

Hurn almost done.

Nic Nat scratching together games.

Drugs again?

A couple of things from this is why would Kelly want to go there when it would be arguably greener pastures at Freo in years to come.

Secondly, the likes of Gaff can see the writing on the wall. Crashed out of the finals with hardly a whimper.

C’mon Gaffy....

Oscar Allen has very fresh legs, half back flankers can be found and so can competent rucks. They are still in a far better position than Freo.

I always thought Gaff's contract resigning was odd and that he wasn't 100% locked in forever and I have thought about whether we have a nibble, but really if we were chasing an expensive outside mid I'd have won the race for Brad Hill and gone down that route.

Gaff these days seems not dangerous enough on the outside and really more of a hard running accumulator who skirts the stoppages getting handballs from Shuey and Yeo and goes contest to contest. Watching him closely I can see why the Eagles didn't miss him all that much last year. We could do with that kind of player, but at the same time we could get Brayshaw, Oliver and Viney fitter and develop their outside games.

Kelly vs Gaff

Sure isn't McQ.

Although Kelly appears to be playing more of his time forward of centre or if he isn't his speed and agility might be getting him into more areas where he can receive more often, taking more shots.  More than double on average here.

Speed factor also seeing him close down on opponents a bit more often?  Tackles & pressure acts are a fair way ahead of Gaff.

Significantly higher clearance averages across the board.  Contested and ground ball also.  Gaff has him in the air a little on marks/intercepts.

Gaff also wins quite well on uncontested which i wouldn't have figured.  Although he is said to have an insane tank so that might explain the ability to get separation from opponent and get on the end of it.

Surprisingly (for me anyway) Gaff also has Kelly well covered on disposal efficiency (73% vs 64.3%) and more importantly kicking efficiency (64.1% vs 54.3%).

Would be handy if we could get a hold of their kick ratings.

Either one would be a handy addition and major improvement to the list...

“Oscar Allen has fresh legs” wtf does that even mean?? He’s shown as much as Oscar McDonald ffs.

Darling is a crab. The only time he takes marks is when his teammates block opponents and the umps don’t pull it up.

Take Hurn and Yeo out of that team and they win half the games they won this year and miss finals.

Shuey is a worse ducker than Selwood but again gets the same treatment as Darling which is a blind eye from the Umps.

Gaff will become a waste by-product of this drug fuelled underperforming team over the next few years and should entertain offers elsewhere.

I think the saga with Willy has and will kill them off, they have alot of ageing players and added on top of all that the travel factor.

Another drugs saga will weight heavily on the club and their culture.

The brand will take a massive hit once again which will drain the life out of them.

All under Trevor Nisbeth watch once again, funny that.

How old is Gaff? I wouldn't trade pick 2 for anyone. Anderson will be a gun we need him more than Gaff.

If i was to choose one player in the league to come to the dees it would be a toss up between Gaff and Kelly

I'd think a Whitfield type or a real speed run and carry guy is who we are after.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players.  Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin Boeing 737 flight to Perth for this upcoming team-bonding, fun-filled, weekend getaway.   This cross-continent Round 4 clash at Fremantle Oval starting at 2:05pm AEST promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies slight favourite.     If we lose, finals will be remoter than Rottnest Island and the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday, an omen.

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
