MudDogs Gawn Win.. someday 499 Posted April 16, 2018 Posted April 16, 2018 On 15/04/2018 at 9:46 PM, deefella said: Big call a few on here maybe angry with this but we just are not good or most importantly HUNGRY enough for it. When these players/so called leader grow a real and proper Backbone we may see some at long last change at the MFC. I’m tired of this club been constantly bullied by the likes of Hawthorn for decades and we never seem to do anything about it...?? All this talk of sacking Goodwin, is silly at this stage, how many more coaches can we go through? Honestly our so called Leaders need to decide what to do to properly change this Culture. PJ is doing his off the field now the players must. Until we change properly membership will only increase at snails pace because of the actions of these players on the field. Go Dees Never a truer word said. I love Jones he is one of my favs right there with Neitz. What he has had to endure as a player is ridiculous. But he is a good player not an on field leader like a hodge/Selwood (tough comparisons). He leads with his actions and doesn’t inspire or conduct players.. We need a smart captain who has game sense that can make coaching calls on the field befor the runner is sent out to do it.. Going forward for me. If we miss the finals again. Viney should be made the sole captain. Because he is a bull that stands up and fights even more than Jones. Quote
Demonsone 2,056 Posted April 22, 2018 Posted April 22, 2018 Early days yet but don’t be surprised if the likes of Hawks, Pies & Dockers go past us & play finals! Quote

layzie 34,528 Posted April 22, 2018 Posted April 22, 2018 Well, based on the first 4/5 games you’d be right. Good thing is it’s a marathon and not a sprint. Quote
Bring-Back-Powell 15,549 Posted April 22, 2018 Posted April 22, 2018 Given our wildly inconsistent first month, I’d be surprised if we actually make finals. We’re such a disappointing footy club. 1 1 Quote

praha 11,267 Posted April 22, 2018 Posted April 22, 2018 (edited) So Sydney, Adelaide, GWS, and Richmond are probably the only sure things. Geelong, WC, Port are likely. That leaves Pies, Melbourne, Hawthorn, Essendon, Freo vying for the last spot. Then you have smokies in North, Bulldogs, Saints also pushing. After last week, and seeing the way North is destroying Hawthorn, I think we're a 30% chance of making finals right now. After this round, likely we'll be 14th after 5 rounds. I am so disheartened after last week's game. It was 2011-esque in the team's revolt against the fundamentals. We won't get within 6-7 goals of Richmond. I think we should prepare ourselves for a very tough 4-5 game losing streak now. The wheels were loose during the pre-season. They're set to fall off now. I seriously think we're set for a 6-8 win season ala Richmond in 2016. Edited April 22, 2018 by praha Quote

Tony Tea 2,816 Posted April 22, 2018 Posted April 22, 2018 Interesting that so many commenters have based their opinions on 2018's first four games. It was apparent midway through 2017, bar the odd rousing win, that we were starting to stagger. Quote
dl4e 5,851 Posted April 22, 2018 Posted April 22, 2018 We can still meke it. Lose the next 2 then get on a winning streak. Why our defence is not performing better I find frustrating. Also having Viney anud tmac out is a bigger blow than most realise. Quote

Backline not working demands an admission of failure from Goody and implementation of a plan B. We have played 1 too many 30 year olds in the backline and lacked capacity to run both ways at pace. We have consistently played players out of position and been impacted by critical injuries. I think we will make the 8, but we will just be making up the numbers. We lack many of the ingredients of a top 4 side to be considered contenders. 1 Quote

Shhh we're not allowed to admit failure or talk about the past. Too negative. We might trigger the playing group's PTSD. 3 Quote
Demon Dynasty 17,165 Posted April 22, 2018 Posted April 22, 2018 (edited) If Goody learns from his major errors so far this year AND the boys decide AS ONE that they are finally not going to lie down and be bullied like we were last week......then we are a show to make finals (subject to Viney coming back by Rnd 12 in a fit state and some sort of form and no further significant injuries). If he is stubborn and has learned nothing and continues with the same game style going forward with most continuing not to stand up against being pushed around....we will finish somewhere between 10th and 14th IMO. Over the next 2-3 weeks we will find out whether Goodwin can really coach, and i mean all levels of coaching. He is being well paid, he has to earn it. He better be coaching to win on Tuesday night, and not just damage control, if it’s the latter then his career will be short Quote

Elderlies in the backline is a fair call and that is because they make too many mistakes. Lewis and Vince. So that leaves the likes of an improving omac along with Jetta, Hibberd, Hunt, Lever, Frost and then maybe a wagner. They should be performing better. Might be the coaching or a couple of out of form players. Plan Bs don't exist at Melbourne. Too many numbers up the alphabet. Quote

He needs to fire up and so does the playing group....physically. He doesn't have to correct that much structurally to make us more competitive than Sunday .... - Anyone but Clarry/Jones in a run with lock down so we have our 2 best clearance players getting more of first use. Tyson comes in to assist here also (a no brainer). Lock downs from lessor lights pls like Harmes/ANB where their low output wont really impact anyway. - Add a bit more speed / run to the outside and a link man ...Hunt? - Add a 2nd tall up forward so those coming i50 have a tall target to go to, other than Hogan (or no one when Hogan is roaming!) and who can also get the ball to to the feet of the smalls. (Weid this week?) - Have the designated smalls get front and square to the above two talls more often and staying down when behind more often for the out the back goal. - Add a 2nd tall who can relief ruck a little and prevent a mid fielder from rucking who has no impact but negatively impacts on our mid field rotations (clearances / hard ball gets / scoring chains etc)... Weid. - Ensure when the press is on there's at least two speedy outriders who are hovering and protecting the back including a tall to kill the long bomb trying to get over the press or mark it (Hunt & Frost). There are obviously other areas and I'm no expert but his hardest task from now is to motivate and get them up to playing on the edge on game day. Last weeks total capitulation can only be put down to a mental break down of 'most' players on the day where they stopped playing a particular brand and didn't stand stand up for themselves in the heat and bring a level of intensity required for AFL. A similar drop off that occurred last year in Rnd 23 (just not as bad). That is the major factor he will need to Coach out of this group as the year rolls on IMO. I think the next 5 weeks tells us the tale. A good mix of big game days vs big clubs (including last week's disaster) and 3 against those we would normally be expected to win (subject to form in the next few weeks). We will certainly know where we are at as a club by the end of Round 9. I am hoping SW that by Rnd 9 we will have risen from last Sunday's ashes as Goodwin's Demons and not Fuchsias! Calm your farm. In 2000 Melbourne lose to Carlton at the G by 96 points mid season. We play Carlton again that year in Preliminary final and beat them to make the Grand Final. Don't these memories bring some form of hope? Quote
