Presumably Frost is set to follow Brown around all day, from deep forward to into the ruck - hope he’s worked on his tank all summer, cos Brown is super fit

Vince to follow Higgins presumably and I would guess we are stacking our mids and going small up front, possibly a four man forward set up

Jetta - Frost

Lewis - Lever - O Mac - Hibberd - Wagner

Gawn - Oliver - Tyson - Salem - Vince - Jones - ANB

Melksham - Petracca - Garlett

Hogan

Bench: Harmes - Kent - Fritsch - Bugg

I think you are onto something there DA. We will play a back 7 with Lever playing as the loose man. Then play with one player short in the forward line with occasional stints of Max Gawn resting forward and Hogan pushing into the midfield. It will leave us short of one tall forward obviously but they are trying to put a bit of extra leg speed into the forward line and midfield by bringing in Kent. Hopefully this will result in greater pressure across the forward half proving they can defend well as a team.

I can't believe the changes. Pedersen has been ok and Hunt puts in 1 shocker and is dropped while Goody's pets Wagner and Bugg continue to get a game. UNBELIEVABLE

Salem is very lucky too didn't see him anywhere near Beams on the TV.

B: LEVER, O.MCDONALD, JETTA

HB: HIBBERD, FROST, LEWIS

C: VINCE, OLIVER, HARMES

HF: MELKSHAM, PETRACCA, NEAL-BULLEN

F: GARLETT, HOGAN, FRITSCH

FOLL: GAWN, TYSON, JONES

IC: SALEM, WAGNER, BUGG, KENT

Bugg must have nudes of goody on his phone. Only way I can make sense of him staying in the side....

Love the Frost inclusion, but do hope he is down back and not forward.

You have to give a bloke at least 2-3 weeks

What I find a bit confusing about the selections is Goody's comments.

Coach Simon Goodwin said Frost and Kent’s recent efforts for Casey couldn’t be ignored.

“They’ve been in unbelievable form at VFL level and they’ve been knocking down the door for a few weeks now,”

I didn't think the VFL had even started, and that all we've done is play some practise matches haven't we? I thought our first actual match is this weekend against Coburg??

Didn't think we'd have any changes, and honestly am not fussed with who is in and out, but the comments to justify the inclusions .... just sounds like a guy spouting 'footy cliches'

First time I’ve genuinely questioned Goodwin’s selections.

Completely understand why Pedo was dropped as well as Hunt. Pedo has been pretty much useless, provides very little pressure, gives away silly free kicks in the ruck and his marking has been very average.

Hunt just looks really average.

Frost as a forward has never worked and I can’t see how he’ll improve on Pedo in that area even though Pedo is down.

Brayshaw not even an emergency. Wtf.

Frost will play down back

Salem didn't play on Beams we only had 1 tagger and that was Vince on Zorko.

I don’t mind the in’s. Kent can be dangerous and looks fitter this year. Also knows he’s playing for his career so deserves a look for a few weeks to see if he will get an extension.

Frost and Omac to man the talls, Jetta the small and we get rebound from Hibberd, Lever and Lewis - along with run from Frost. So his inclusion is fine.

The outs however I can’t have.

Hunt had a mare last week but has runs on the board from last year. Can play forward (dangerous when tried last year), mid and back. Has X factor and we all love his pace.

Pedo just plays a role. Not great but he competes. We have the worst plan going forward where we bomb it long all the time. We need another tall down there unless we finally lower our eyes.

If we bomb it long to Hogan one on three all weekend and watch them easily rebound it out from uncontested intercept marks I’ll spew.

Keep it simple Goody, you cost us finals last year playing Weid early on whilst Pedo killed it in the twos and you have already cost us 4pts round 1 not playing Tyson over Maynard.

With these two ins it has to be Wags and Bugg out

Salem gave a chop out

Beams was quiet

Salem did his job, methinks

Beams was quiet but it wasn't because of Salem Beams just had a dirty night.

Should we lose this one and Wagner Bugg under perform I'll be upset. Hope they prove me wrong but if it is close and their poor efforts are the difference I will be livid..Given the talent running around at Casey on Sunday its hard to imagine how they command a spot both on recent and career form.

Yes and no - there was quite a bit going off the ball that the cameras didn't pick up

Salem was doing a lot of bullocking and blocking work

Goodwin loves that

With no Pedo who will be back up ruck for Maxy??

Kent is a strange one, particularly when you have Fritsch, Harmes and ANB who play similar roles.

Not sure what Gus is thinking ATM

Petracca

Don't dis-count Gawn up forward as well, at times.

Admittedly I've had a few and am writing this in a cab on the way home.

I've watched the game quarter by quarter throughout this week on the way to work. Salem was not anywhere near as bad as people are suggesting. Often very clean and effective, there was not way he was getting dropped.

Wagner did a lot right as well. If you were looking at it objectively, out of the back 6, hunt was definitely the one to make way.

Pedders has been very poor in the relief ruck role this year, a liability and has cost us when Max is off the ground...not a patch on last year and his forward work has been average so not surprising to see him out.

Who covers the relief ruck will be interesting...

Kent, I'm not a fan.

He really needs to bring forward pressure and this is not his strong suit.

We will know more about his future on Saturday afternoon.

No pressure, no more Kent.

Lucky he won't play there then.

I don't mind the selections, but I'm baffled how you could drop Hannan after round 1, but then keep Bugg after last week.

Hannan had 1 tackle, 0 tackles Inside 50, 2 score involvements, 0 1%ers & 9 possessions

Bugg had 4 tackles, 2 tackles Inside 50, 6 score involvements, 2 1%ers and 13 possessions

Not groundbreaking stuff but had a better game statistically and provides that forward pressure that is essential. Also did the job shutting down Hodge apparently and did a good job if that's the case. This also doesn't take into some of the other advanced stats like pressure acts etc

Didn’t see last week, although followed demonland and the stats, but I did go to the G..

A lot of guys were passengers against the cats, Hunt certainly and last week 6 possessions? He needs the pressure off to reassess, so I see him out as sensible now and long term, he’ll be back

Pedo, sorry but he is not best 22, and for those who think he is then the Dees are only a middle of the road team... thanks Pedo but in your last year you are depth

Jetta Lever and Harmes are very lucky because they were awful in round one and apparently little if at all better round two.

Kent and Frost in is a clear indicator to me that Goody is looking for a little more unpredictability... and both have it in spades regardless of where they play.. I reckon Frost will follow Waite not Brown, OMac will take care of him ... perhaps they will let Lever play on himself so he can get a kick..

Kent gets 4 matches to save his career... and he could be good with Jeffy Trac Fritta Melksh and Hoges

Replicating Richmond may backfire. Carey said something on thursday that stuck. "Other teams can try and copy Richmonds small forward model, but it can only work if you have that speed, and no one else does" or something to that effect. Speed AND the ferocity.

Richmond forward half isn't working atmo, like last year.  A combo I think of a hangover, and other clubs making adjustments to tactics.

I think the tigers small quick forwardline is just a bit too far on the small quick side.  Which did work for them last year.

Maybe in time Smith for us with his speed & leap, could help out with our mod's to a small quick forward zone.  In time, will tell.

I think its either Frost or Petracca, this week.   and maybe a 3way rotation... through the mids. Hogan, Petracca, Frost?

I love Hunt but his form over JLT and the first 2 rounds has been very average

Agreed. He's very poor with ball in hand and I think a few supporters need to look past his only strength which is his pace.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
