Our inability to kick high scores

When you look at the AFL ladder there is a function that lists the highest score kicked of each team.  Melbourne had a highest score in 2017 of 122 points (round 10 v Gold Coast Suns).

This is 16th in the league.

Why can we not kick bigger scores?  Surely this is something to be looked at in preseason.

Richmond is not a high scoring team either are Bris or GC irrelevant stat this is, just reveals their highest score.

Our style of game wasn't suited to high scoring (20 goals plus) as Goodwin was focusing more on defence structures. Also we had a dew games where had to constantly adjust our forward line due to injuries.

Actually we have had problems all season with our delivery into the forward line. Even when we were playing well and dominating other teams we weren't getting the scoreboard results that the general play would lead you to expect. 

It felt like we were often missing a link. Our forward structure is definitely still a work in progress. I can't help but think having Hogan as a lead up chf and someone like TMac in the square would be a better structure, potentially with watts on the wing receiving out of defence. 

We have also struggled with contested marks.  Part of this could be attributed to having hoges out of the team for so much of the year as well as long stints without any proper ruck.

It is interesting that Richmond have managed to make a forward line with only one tall work so well. Perhaps there is something to learn there.

If we're in the running for Lever and Gaff, we also need another pure forward and perhaps another outside running wing on top of having Gaff. I hope we take some list spot 'risks' on free agents, trade a player who hasn't taken a few chances and a player who's best 22 and a pick for an upgrade or identify a discard to give another chance to. (Stuart Dew anyone?)

Despite many blaming poor delivery, our midfielders don't contribute enough to the score from around the arc (Tyson and Bernie were two who went entirely missing this year in this regard) and our key forwards are lacking (sorry, but it's true).

Also, poor delivery is a function of our game-plan on two fronts; with Simon's Tsunami, we're deliberately kicking to an undermanned forward-line with the hope of at least bringing it to ground and then trapping it in through a combination of forward pressure and an advancing high press.

If this succeeds with the opposition struggling to clear, we then create an opposition flood against - ironic in the sense that Roos was at the helm when this game-plan was being devised - with the result that it's harder to pick and execute short targets.

Note how we entirely dominate periods of play without adding much in the way of scoreboard pressure, but the opposition keeps in touch by occasionally getting through the line with a touch of luck and scoring easily out back. 

I trust in Simon, and part of this game-plan may have been a reaction to our our personnel (i.e - no genuine tall-playing forwards but a raft of mediums), but I would hope that there's a few tweaks being considered in the off-season.

In our case though it's an important statistic because we barely scored more than our opponents collectively for the entire season. If we're not scoring much but defending well then it doesn't matter. Should we have scored more or defended better against Brisbane? Either of the two leads to more percentage gain. For GC it doesn't make a difference but for a team on the verge of a finals appearance and one that missed out on percentage, it's an important statistic. Either we're not attacking well enough, or we're defending poorly.

An outlying statistic (single highest score) is not a good indicator.

In the 2017 regular season, Melbourne kicked more points than 11 other teams in the AFL, including Richmond. The average score per game was 92.5 points.

Melbourne kicked over 100 points eight times, and over 90 points 15 times. A few of these matches were losses.

I don't believe we had one game where we won all four quarters. That is a better indicator for me.

And beside from our cobbled together forward line most of the year it doesn't help when you have 2 on 6 at centre bounces.

Agreed. The more I think of the injuries this year and *who* we missed, the more I think we had a pretty solid season considering. Doesn't excuse the last game, though

I didnt think we had either...there WAS one...against the puppies

This winning qtrs is an odd thing really..typically one of those things that looks good, ought to be good , but often more an enigma than clarity.

Ok fair enough but if you Look at the club across the road from us they finished with 8 wins in 2016 they went out and recruited 3 ready made players 25 y.o and younger Nankervis,Prestia and Caddy to their club and what is the result? A [censored] prelim final and on the cusp of a GF but you've heard this all before havent you please.?
