Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Moving past the Land bickering and most of what Dr.D writes...

Mahoney would simply be trying to send the message that we won't let him go for nothing.

And that hopefully, gets a club to fork over something of value.

Only problem - I don't buy it, Josh...

And I don't think other clubs will.

I think we blink and he goes for a 3rd rounder (ND40+) or I am not giving Mahoney enough credit and we keep him because we won't get value back.

It will be very interesting if JW gets an opportunity to speak tonight.

There are those in the club who have prepared for the possibility JW will make an impassioned speech of his love for the club, apologises for letting team members, supporters and the club in general down, declaring his desire to do what ever it takes to win a premiership for Melbourne before declaring that he will not authorise a trade.

This is possible and would be making a big statement.

From what I hear the thing that has really got Watts offside with the coach and some players is going away to Byron to promote his board short business while he was injured.  Watts did not do rehab properly while away and lost so much fitness he was useless on his return. A 2 week injury turned into 4 plus the 3 weeks it took to get him back to full fitness.

All for the money. TaTa, jw.

your ship has sailed.

Here is a question. If Watts goes to another club which Melbourne player would man up on him next year?

Fun question, probably the wrong time as it will be lost among the trade talk...

If he plays closer to goal - Lever because he can peel off and do damage.

If he is out and about - I would put Hunt on him and give up the chest marks, and hurt him the other way, and it might stop a hard tag of Hunt.

I would be filthy if that happened. This has been my biggest gripe with this situation is that it’s made our bargaining position very shaky. How could Jack possibly return for another year after everything that has happened? He can’t, which means I feel like the club will be forced to accept a lesser deal for him.

We SHOULD get a 2nd rounder for him, and bugger it if we can’t get a satisfactory deal then keep him. He’s a professional, our clubs professional, we’d find a way to make it work. (At least that’s the impression we have to give)

As a 'defender' I have respect for GNF who seems to be well informed.  This would be very bad by Watts if confirmed, though you have to ask why the club let him go - perhaps he promised to be good and wasn't.

But GNF's report is the only  report about this I have any faith in.  All the  'attackers' have done to date is just speculate repeatedly until it becomes 'fact' to them.

Assuming this is true, the club would've approved leave and given him a rehab program to complete. If he came back and wasn't rehabbed and/or had lost fitness the club would be rightfully [censored].

Not the clubs fault he didn't comply, not their fault for approving the leave. It's Jack's fault for coming back underdone.

Spot on!

3rd rounder? We might as well through him in the Yarra!! As it is I'm unhappy about a 2nd rounder.. The devil you know is so much better than the devil you don't, particularly when that devil can kick a ball lace out to a leading forward!

Just out of interest if you were in charge of the Watts deal is there any point - 3rd round pick for Watts, 4th round, 5th? - where you would say that we are better off keeping him?

I wouldn't accept anything less than a mid second round pick for Jack.

Pleanty of baggers on his lack of intensity and physicallity, but the facts are this guy also has elite feild kicking, decision making and goal kicking skills.  His 2016 season was outstanding and he was one of our key contributors on half a dozen occasions this season.

I'd rather play him in the side for half season next year than trade him for peanuts.   When he plays enough twos he will find that hunger and would be a match winner on the occasions he did play.

The club of the last couple years, especially under Mahoney, seems to be very deliberate in trade week.

IMO, they must see an desired asset that requires a 2nd pick and that is why they freed up Watts as a commodity.

If that commodity doesn't net them what they were envisioning, will they still go through with the trade?

The list manager in me says no, but the coach in me just wants to follow through on what we got a player to wrap his head around.

A few issues with this post.

"His record doesn't yet count" - we improved by 20% in Simon Goodwin's first year. The "extremely talented players" lost by over 100 points in Paul Roos' last game as coach.

"You can't have a team of all Viney's", agreed, but you have to have the instinct to contest.

"I'm now interested to see if Goodwin learns his own lesson. Jack will be fine." - What lesson is that, exactly? And after 9 years of inconsistent performance, why will Jack be fine? I think that Jack is the one that needs to learn a lesson.

From a results point of view, we failed to meet the expectation (to make finals) so it would seem a fair assessment to not pass or fail his record as a coach yet.

I wanted what Goodwin said he would get, the best of Jack Watts. However, he clearly can't make that happen.

Roos showed Jack could be coached, said trading him would be a mistake.

Not only is Goodwin saying he's unable to coach a player with immense talent, but he's also giving him up for nothing.

I never said players don't have weaknesses. Don't make stuff up because it suits you.

The players I mentioned give their all every time they run on to the ground. Did you want to dispute that?

Same can't be said for Jack.

You are saying that watts doesn't try? I dispute that.

I'm also saying that there are some average footballers that try real hard but don't have the attributes like Jack and or simply have a bad game regardless of attributes or how hard they try. Yes its part of the equation . I know which player id keep.

The whipping boy mentality continues, he doesn't try every week! lol

There are many factors for an afl footballers formline. Every player has ups and downs including the guys you mentioned that give there all every-week and have had bad games.

lol, I've been to a couple of B&Fs and they normally run a pretty tight ship. They won't let him near the stage tonight unfortunately. Although that would be great viewing! Instead, he'll just be the elephant in the room.

I feel sorry for him and all the fans he'll have to deal with with tonight asking him to stay and he'll just have to awkwardly answer with "Sorry, not much I can do when they want you gone".

I don't read too much into contract stuff. Watts wouldn't be on much money, probably even cheaper because over 3 years so there's no harm in offering Watts 3. By the time Weideman develops no need for Watts.

Watts wouldn't be on much money? Huh? When he was coming out of contract last year he was on the restricted free agent's list, meaning he was in the 10 highest-paid players at the club.

So after already being in the top 10 highest paid players at the club after what you and many would deem a disappointing career, he has his breakout year. After a terrific 2016, he signed a deal while he had the highest bargaining power he's had at any point during his time at the club.

It's therefore safe to confidently assume that he'd currently be among the top 5 or 6 highest paid players in the club.

Your Weideman/Watts theory is completely nonsensical.

He’ll be fine, he’s well liked by his teammates and I can’t possibly see any reason why he’d be near a mic at any stage. I’d expect he’ll knock back some beers and relax.

Off topic but did the players end up having a mad Monday? Usually we hear more about it but there was absolutely nothing this year.

How many people on this forum actually know Jack Watts personally ? I don’t that’s for certain . How many people are deciding their opinion of him with absolutely know idea what he is like ! Just a wild guess here , I’m thinking everybody in the football department do know him quite well . I have really no opinion on this dividing issue because of the issue above !

Having said that , he doesn’t appear to me to be setting the world on fire as a professional sportsman after 9 years ! Sometimes brilliant and sometimes pretty darn ordinary! So frustrating to realize he could be anything , but,  has this fatal flaw  in his preparation!

Here's my true, but false sounding, knowledge of Jack. I have a friend who has a group of friends that do hang around Jack (they play basketball, talk about NBA etc). He  definitely likes to have a good time  (socially)off the field - so that rumour I know is true, but i think 99% of the people on this forum already know that.

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
