Bruce wanted a two year deal and he deserved it. His form warranted it. By offering a one year contract to a loyal and hard working player  they were virtually opening the door and easing him out. 'Don't like our terms go!' When you play well over 200 games witrh a club it would be hard not to still love that club. I always remember, as a new Hawthorn player, turning up to Jim Stynes funeral wearing a demons tie. I wouldn't say Green was done when he was shown the door. Was Robbo another who got the shove?

They were all done. Few footy players get to decide the terms of their retirement. Even Boomer Harvey wanted to keep playing and he was almost 40. Bruce didn't last two seasons at the Hawks before having to call it quits.

Supporters are far too quick to stick the boot in to the club for making sensible list management decisions.

How can you sit here from the outside and honestly think you know more about what a player contributes than what those inside the club do? Goodwin clearly doesn't like his attitude and application, and either do 90% of supporters every time we lose. If the club thinks it's the best thing, them go for it.

My opinion is that a player who chooses when he will bring intensity, is cancerous on a young up and coming group trying to built culture and habits. How can a young kid see Watts getting games and not trying and think this is acceptable?

We can kick up a big fuss if Watts is traded without receiving a decent player in return. If he goes for peanuts I will be disgusted with the MFC and I have been a passionate Melbourne supporter for over sixty Years! We will certainly go backwards in a big way if this trade happens. Aren't we sick of talking about NEXT year or the year after? I really thought we on the move in the UPWARDS direction. Thought anyway.

Like you I'll be disappointed if Watts is steak knives in another trade, but we won't go backwards without him. Hawthorn won a flag the year after Buddy left, as did Geelong when Ablett left. And these blokes are superstars of the game. Watts has been dropped for poor form by Roos and Goodwin.

Goodwin obviously believes that the modern game is all about pressure across the board, and hardness at the contest. These are Watts' flaws. I'll back the coach on this one.

Read the comments on Facebook about saying he was getting kicked out...

The best n fairest is going to be awkward if he's there. I wonder if Goody and Macca will ask him not to come?

Sorry if it's been said already, but which page is all this on..?

I'm more worried for us supporters

who are we going to blame for being rubbish if he leaves?

it can't be all Dom Tyson's fault!!

Simple for me - if he doesn't put in as much as is required and commit to the team rules he is out.  Goody will not bend and I like it

It's doing the round. Apparently he was at some function and someone asked if he'd like to stay at Melbourne and his supposed response was something along the lines of, "Bit hard when they're kicking you out the door".

He's gonski.

Sam grey might be a handy pressure forward to us as part of the deal? He's proven he can kick goals and tackle.

Seems like Goodwin has been handed the keys to a rebuilt Monaro and it intent on stacking it into a light pole.

Trade Watts for what exactly-better be Vines,Robbie Gray or Dixon. The rest are shyte.

And Watts has been a superstar! Not selected in the pre season comp, and dropped twice through the year of a team that finished 9th. Gun. Two first rounders surely

While I would like Jack to stay, if you told me we were getting Danger, Martin, Cotchin or Selwood, we would all be screaming in delight.

Therefore we would be happy to move him on, as long as we did well out of the deal.

Most have said we are happy with the current FD.

So, shouldn't we accept that the FD know what they are doing and just hope that they get a good deal, before we burn the joint down?

Yep, and then 5 years from now every loss will be because of Goodwins development. How about, the next top 10 pick that doesn't win a Brownlow is because he saw Wattsy joking and laughing after a [censored] poor effort and bad loss and thought "that's what afl players do"

100% spot on

While i accept JW is a favorite and we're not even 100% sure he's actually gone yet.

If trading JW makes us better I'm all for it. And that extends to all players on our list. Except maybe tracc haha

Interestingly this is my take on the assessment of Goodwin's performance in your thread on the main board.

Had we beat the Pies and made the finals would Watts still be on the outer? I think he would as he has apparently demonstrated poor habits and standards off field both pre-season and following his injury mid-season and it seems to be a recurring theme throughout his career.

Hypotheticals are fun!

He would have been in a finals winning MFC team. Winning that game changes everything.

Agree there is a lot of crazy comments atm and the JW fans seem to blame everyone but JW for JWs current situation. Isnt ironic the jones and goodwin threads have emerged right now?

Just to comfirm my stance. I dont care if JW stays or goes. But his captians comments recently haven't painted jack well. and if trading JW makes us better, so be it.

Let's remember these standards arent set by goodwin they're voted in by the leadership group about how they want each other to act/perform.

If Watts is swapped out for a forward with Michael Hibberds style of intensity and the ball gets locked in that forward line more often and for longer, then I can see this making us better.

Paul Roos says it would be a massive mistake to trade jack watts.

Ox says there are people in our coaching group desperately hoping he stays.

This sounds like a Simon Goodwin driven decision.

I hope he gets it right because if he doesn't it's on him

A sluggish start, much better through middle of the year, pretty ordinary after returning from injury.

However....

  • No 2. for delivering accurately inside 50 in the AFL!  Only bettered by Tex Walker!!
  • No.3 for linked involvements in scoring chains at the MFC
  • One of our most accurate kicks for goal inside 40 meters if not the most!
  • Basically kicked the deciding goal against our old foe on QB weekend FTW (that almost seals it for me )

We can ill afford to lose one of the best ball users by foot in the competition when we are, generally, up amongst the worst!

I know there were some issues pre-season in Wattys' preparations, and only Watts has himself to blame here if the rumours were true.

If he has cleaned up his alleged acts off the field and is ready for a huge pre-season, then he's a HUGE keeper.

This is simply the wrong guy to be putting on the trade table, subject to a self driven clean up.

There are more problem players at the MFC, who can't hit anything by foot, or get caught / over use the handball far too often, who i would look at way before Jacky boy.

Hitting targets by foot does three things.....

  • Allows the receiving player time/space to assess and either play on immediately or go back and hit the next target either gaining ground or laterally / backwards but maintaining possession and chewing up the clock (if needed).
  • Allows a player inside 50 to do the same and either take a shot at goal or pass it off to a player in a better position (IF he is reasonably accurate by foot)
  • Helps the team control the momentum and direction (slow / fast / switch) of the game and keeps the ball off of a potentially dangerous ball using / running opposition for longer.  Giving more 'accurate' ball use to us and keeping the opposition as cold as possible, forcing them to defend, chase and use up valuable energy is a huge advantage and one i would rather have more than less of.

DO NOT TRADE!!

Agree 100% will not renew membership as a protest. Tyson & others kick the ball 2 opposition all the time. I'm angry at the thought of trading him to make some kind of statement. U can't tell me Pedersen etc r better long term options. I'm really annoyed that so many NQRS aren't thrown under the bus. I mean Vander burg etc they have crap disposal but they try hard. Well we have been trying hard fir over 50 years & we get rid of our best kick for what return.

On SEN they mentioned Geelong are interested in Watts, along with Collingwood, West Coast and Port.

I can see Geelong using him to fill the role of Menzel. They seemed to be targeting Stringer for that but he seems to be off to Essendon. I can see them diverting their attention to Watts after that. Now pick 20 from the Cats would be a perfect price for Watts IMO. He'll also like taking over the no. 4 at the cattery following Mackie's departure too.

SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
