Id just leave Jesse in the square all day. Dont bother running up the ground. a few times last week we got the ball, looked up and there was no one in our forward line to kick it to. Just leave him there.

I agree. We looked dangerous but had no one in the forward 60. Players over handled the footy and created bad turnovers. Surely Jesse Hogan inside 50 being man on man is very very dangerous.

Watts on the half back flank and wing. Put Vince around half forward or use him as a tagger. I don't like Vince being used to kick the ball back in.

B: Michael Hibberd, Oscar McDonald, Neville Jetta

HB: Nathan Jones, Tom McDonald, Jayden Hunt

C: Jordan Lewis, Christian Petracca, Christian Salem

HF: Clayton Oliver, Jesse Hogan, Jake Melksham

F: Jeff Garlett, Cam Pedersen, James Harmes

Foll: Max Gawn, Dom Tyson, Bernie Vince

I/C: Jack Watts, Angus Brayshaw, Mitch Hannan, Alex Neal-Bullen

Emg: Josh Wagner, Declan Keilty, Corey Maynard

In: Salem, Watts

Out: Billy Stretch, Josh Wagner

Apart from Jack Viney missing, that is probably our strongest team. I like the inclusion of Salem and Watts. It does strengthen our team.

Lets see how much Watts wants to keep his place in the team. I expect him to respond well. But well done to Goodwin who just treated Jack as any other player, didnt care that he was a former number 1 pick. He did what he thought was best for the team.

Just looking at the line up, if we do make finals and Viney comes back who would make way for him? I honestly could not look at that 22 and say that player should be out.

Bernie Vince

We want the best possible trade for him so he better.

We play better without him because it forces us to lower our eyes.

Don't worry  Salem takes them when in side, I was hoping that Vince would be suspended, I think he is getting a game because his Goodwins mate, he won't get dropped no matter how badly he plays.

The mix in the forward line is so crucial depending on our dominance at center clearances and control of the ball in general play. we can only go with 2 tall at a time in the forward line and 3-4 small forwards who apply pressure. Once we go with 3 talls if our delivery is just bombed in and teams have been dropping a spare in defence, our ability to put pressure in50 diminishes alarmingly and we are susceptible to rapid rebound 50 attempts ie GWS the orange tsunami. Mix has to be right.

Keilty will be an emergency this week, just to give him a taste of the pre-game routine, and incase a big man goes down. Was told it was a reward for his latest form.

Congrats to your bro . Well deserved

Who are they going to put on hogan, Pedo, watts, trac???

win it in the middle.

Game over

BIG congrats to Dec Keilty for being named an emergency. Due recognition for some outstanding form in the magoos.

Is Goodwin sending a message to him and Maynard as emergencies - not far away, keep perservering etc.??

Keilty upgraded - a sign that he will play this week?

Someone reported that Tom Mc looked sore so Declan could come in.

IF so its, a very big game for him to debut in!!

Interesting that, if this is a serious concern, that Keilty gets the emergency slot ahead of Frost.

I missed a couple of games before he was dropped.....was he that bad?  By some accounts he was ok last weekend at Casey.

Looks great on paper - just hope they will look great on the park!

True....the game is played on grass, not paper.

He's sending that message to the whole list. If you're in form, we'll give you a crack. And we do what we say we do.

Just watched Goody's presser.  I've never known a coach to say nothing so often.

Not that I care.

I might be in the minority, but I like that. He can pick his moments in the media, otherwise just play a straight bat and do the talking behind the scenes and on the field.

Love his segment on the MFC site Simon's selections  http://m.melbournefc.com.au/video/2017-08-24/rd-23-simons-selection.

Punchy and too the point.

It took me a while to warm to this segment and Goodwin in general after Roos and his equivalent segment "Roos Views".  I'm guessing Roos had to do a lot more talking and external perception management than perhaps he would have ideally liked, due to the nature of where we were comming from on-feild over his reign.  Goodwin is at times almost blunt with the media, without being a complete a-hole like someone like Malthouse was.

Just showing how much things have changed in one or two seasons, love the fact that we are approaching Saturdays game as favourites before going into finals with the expectation that we should win and secure a definite finals spot.  It is dangerous for us to be favorites I know, but it's still poles apart from us being rank outsiders and with only a remote mathematical chance of scraping into the 8.  The opposite matchday result of last Rd last season is what we want.

Awaiting Saturday's game with real excitement and atisipation.

GO DEMONS.

I think Goodwin has shown a harder edge in the last few weeks - ramping up the pressure and expectation prior to finals. A good thing.

Humour 'Demons11'...let me leave you to think about the Queens Birthday.

Well, it could very possibly be Bucks' grand finalé.

Not sure if I'd be able to wait for the Sunday evening result if we happen to lose on Saturday. That's a really nerve-wrecking wait!

How many season defining games is this in a row? 4? 5?

Based on the comments on DL I think this'll be the 22nd season defining game in a row, but I didn't look at the comments for the pre-season games.

I recon Howe will take Watts.

I hope so. He's one of the loosest backmen in the comp and this would leave Jack to roam free and do Watts he does best!

Collingwood playing their best available team when they have nothig to play for, which is rare in Round 23.

But wait, I just remembered -  games against Melbourne are their Grand Final.

They haven't beaten us since 2014.  A peasant club.

Suggest either ANB or Hannan, but probably depend on how they and the team perform on Saturday. There is no doubt that team is strengthened by Viney who  makes Max twice as good. If you had to rank the team above, I would certainly put ANB and Hannan 21 & 22, but we are getting to the stage where we have an embarrassment of riches which is obviously where we need to be...

@Copuchas Our old mate Bontempelli has tipped against us again true to form!

Wow, he really does have a grudge against the MFC. Has he picked us once this season?

I hope someone calls him out on social media.

And our team on paper looks ridiculously good, but they are just names.  Really need Watts and Salem to pull their finger out.

I'm hungry for at least another five season defining games. Can't get enough of them.

If I am honest with myself I am absolutely [censored] myself about our game this week.

If we get over the line I will be like a fat kid in a lolly shop.

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.

The Demons simply did not take their opportunities when they presented themselves and ultimately when down by 25 points effectively ending their finals chances. Goal kicking practice during the Bye?
