I continue to be surprised on this forum. Watts hasnt been named in the best players for 2 weeks yet he is 'a cut above the rest' and should get a call up?

Watts' efforts in the afl for 3 weeks were unforgivable and disgusting. An absolute [censored].

He has not shown any appetite for the contest and we dont need guys like him in the team come finals. We need hard guys that put their head over the footy.

Plus poise, supreme accuracy in kicking, speed, marking ability and smart disposal.

That sounds like Watts on many an occasion. Hell be back soon. Don't forget that he contributed to many early wins early in the season so if we make finals he was a  big part of it.

The VFL MRP or whatever they are, don't appear (to me anyway) to be nearly as over the top, inconsistent or influenced by the media frenzy as the AFL MRP. The Watts report will get tossed out in record time.

Watts helped the bloke to the ground safely. Bet that doesn't happen every day. I know i never did it.....

Mate, if Jack didn't love footy and playing with that team - he would have quit years ago.

You do realise the mess of a footy club you have been following for the past decade?

Agree with this, loves the team and his teammates from all accounts.

BUT I would really like to know what makes him tick. The celebration after kicking the goal in the last Q on QB V Pies. Playing well until injured in the Doggies game. Upon return from injury looking much less interested in doing the non negotiables, did the injury play a part in it? He seems to be a very different cat than your stereotype AFL footballer.

I also think that after his (unique) football career is over he will be successful in whatever he chooses to do. I would put money on it.

I will never forget that goal at the QB game. I have only replayed it about 500 times. The fact I was in a box with 15 Collingwood supporters only made me love him that bit more. He will be back.

So Keilty was in the hurt locker today, had some foot issues that required a jab, nothing too serious. And damaged his hand in the 3rd quarter after a contest.

Despite this I thought he played pretty well, not as good as his last couple of weeks but got his hands to the ball and took some important grabs.

The AFL.com report on Watts report was pretty poor. Claiming he jumped into the Williamstown player with eyes for the player, and not the ball.

There was very little contact, the afl.com.au report of the incident is just breaking things down. The umpires should able to remove a report after the incident, anyone would look at it and know it's fine.

Thanks all for your reports

From the video clip Watts was barely a free and the report should be quashed

I have never seen him, but is Keitley an upgraded Garland?

Sounds like they're setting him up for a Jack Redpath special.

All it needs now is for someone from the club to say something helpful like they did with Clarry in the Schofield thing - like, say, "Yeah, Wattsy gets too frustrated when someone plays him close, he has to do better on that" - and we won't have to worry about whether to select him for next week and the first 2 weeks of next season.

Wow.

So has Nathan Jones.

What kind of a point is that?

Watts comes in next week, no if or butts, he has got back his match fitness, before he  Mist 4 weeks he was in the top 5 players, the team has not played well when his been out, he should have played a game in the VFL after coming back from injury, people have short memories before injury everyone was saying best year ever by him, if we are going to do anything in the finals he must play, they say it was a tough day weather wise, he took 12 marks that very good, he only averages about 17 posies a game at Afl, you don't leave out your classiest player in finals, they are the player that stand out in finals

Watts will definitely come in vs Pies. Didnt even see the Casey game but his stats tell me enough. This has been planned by the coaching staff for the 6 day break going into round 23.

Salem will return too.

I don't know about Salem, but yeah I'd be very surprised if Watts doesn't come in. Should we beat the Lions and do it well we should be solidly placed in the finals, we can manage players better and give others like Watts and Hogan a good chance to get some match fitness.

We could look back at this as a stroke of genius.

Well done to Casey they had to struggle through our injuries through the year and have come out the other side very well.

DEES CLOSE IN ON TOP FOUR by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons moved into the VFL top four with a hard fought 24 point victory over ladder leader Williamstown at Casey Fields on Saturday.

The game was a fierce battle as strong tackling and close play were the order of the day. Casey finished the game with 136 tackles, a statistic led by its smaller brigade of Jay Kennedy-Harris (19), Corey Maynard, Tomas Bugg and James Munro as the team fulfilled coach Justin Plapp's requirements by giving the Seagulls their hardest contest for the season to overturn their opening round defeat at Burbank Oval.

The win was a tribute to Plapp's coaching which has seen the team lift itself off the floor with a 1-4 start to move into premiership contention, achieving this without a team chock full of experienced AFL listers as happened last year.

The Demons had just 10 MFC players available this week and they were again capably backed up by the mix of experience and youth among their VFL listed players. Munro with 24 disposals was outstanding, skipper Jack Hutchins was steady in defence and Ed Morris (20 touches) was a busy and effective member of the Demons' small brigade.

All eyes were on Jack Watts in his second match since he was dropped from the Melbourne team. Watts opened brightly when he marked 25 metres out and kicked the first goal of the game. He played well picking up 20 possessions and 12 marks and even provided a  handout against the prolific Nick Meese in the ruck. Watts was placed on report for charging a Williamstown opponent at a marking contest. My observation is that he collided marginally late with minimal force and that the charge should be thrown out.

The visitors were in control of the game for most of the first half. They led by eight points at the first break and held that lead until deep in the second term before Bayley Fritsch's goal at the 28 minute mark was immediately followed by another to Morris. A further major to Kennedy-Harris just before half time found the Demons taking a 12-point lead into the long break.

It was more of the same during a dour third quarter with Casey maintaining its distance and recording two late goals to push the lead to 22 points at three quarter time before it saw off a brief Willi revival to run home a comfortable winner. The Demons remain undefeated at home for the 2017 season.

Kennedy-Harris had an outstanding game and the controversial Bugg also relished the conditions after serving a six match suspension incurred against the Sydney Swans for an equal game high record of 24 disposals.

The Demons could finish the round as high as third on the ladder depending on the outcome of today's game between Box Hill and Port Melbourne.

  • FEATURE: 1925

A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

  • NON-MFC: Round 08

Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

The Demons hit the road in Round 8, heading to Perth to face the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium. With momentum building, the Dees will be aiming for a third straight victory to keep their season revival on course. Who comes in and who goes out?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
