Just to clarify, having screwed Viney's foot by bringing him back too early, we now propose to take the same risk with Hogan's shoulder? I'd rather see Watts play, and give Hogan at least one more week.

On the bold assumption that Hogan is actually fit to play, hopefully we see:

IN: Hogan, Stretch, Maynard

OUT: Weideman, Wagner, Viney

Right on the money. Are our high performance team really that high in their performance. Either selection committee are bringing them back too soon or Misson and the team aren't making the right recommendations.

Gawn, Watts, Salem, Viney all seem to have came back too early ...

Goodwin on Viney: "We certainly feel that Jack has got some footy ahead of him. We're positive he'll play again this year".

Doesn't fill me with great confidence as a Melbourne supporter. In fact, I'm fearing the worst whilst trying to slap myself out of it.

??! Do you understand what those words mean?

Im sure he does, but Im sure he is scarred of presser after presser from ALL AFL coaches saying one thing and meaning another. Goodwin doesn't do this - but it's hard to readjust if its just one...and its your own team...and you're anxious as [censored] for good news.

Same. Overall I have been happy with Frost & O Mac's development down back this year.

Could there be more to him not being selected? I'm sure his contract it up at years end, and the paranoia in me says he is off to another club. Again, this is based on noting but my paranoia.

I think it's just we are now at the pointy end of the season and player development now takes a backseat to having the best players play where they are best. Even though Omac and Frost have done admirably they both have a long way to go to catch Tmac.

My take is that the club probably realise (think) that we wont win the main prize, but to reach the finals in itself would be a huge confidence booster for the future. (And if this WAS actually what they were thinking, i would agree)

The difference between making finals, even if only by percentage, and missing out is HUGE. I could live with being bundled out in our first Elimination final, as long as we made it, and it wasn't a blowout. I would look forward to next season much more than if we missed out. My membership would be upgraded, i would be much more likely to buy club merchandise for Christmas gifts etc etc. Miss finals and i would be so [censored] flat...... grrrr.

Whatever it takes to make the 8 is fine by me. Short term pain and all that. I honestly dont think we are a realistic chance of winning the flag THIS year, but it is soooo important that we at least make the finals.

I'm with you there STMJ.  The fact that he has a problem other than the PF operation is not a good sign as some are taking it.  I'm concerned there's more to it.  We'll just have to wait and see.

It's an ambiguous sentence.

Read the rest of what he said in the presser and you'll see it's all just hopeful talk.

Noone knows.

"But we certainly feel that he's got some footy ahead of him. He recovers well, he heals well, and it's not a fracture or anything in his foot.

"So we're really positive about him playing some footy. If it's not next week, we'll see how we go for the rest of the year.

"It's a week-by-week thing. He's starting to heal and feel better, but we'll just see how he comes up on Monday and start progressing him from there."

Next week no certainty.

Misson is not a Doctor but as I understand it he has the final say in who plays and who doesn't. Happy to be corrected but I am pretty sure that is why the previous medical team up and walked. Dr Andrew Daff and his team left in 2011 disturbed by the heirarchy that put non-Doctors above the Doctors. May have also had something to do with certain medical/supplement treatements that were in vogue at the time....

Interesting jnrmac. I recall that Trengrove was given some controversial stuff at one stage from Dank or his associates and someone from the medical team resigned at the time.

In any case, the performance of returning players has been really poor this year so something is broken in the operating model. The other possibility is that players are being given too much say in whether they are right to go or not..What player doesn't want to return early? Sometimes the club needs to make the decisions for them e.g. Viney

If he sits out until finals, that'll be a 3 week break. That's a decent amount of time off to heal depending on what the injury is.

Maybe he'll be given until finals to rest and prove he is ready?

I've no doubt the FD is aiming to have Jack fit and firing for our first elimination (assuming we get there).

If we kill the Lions this week he will probably given another week off, given our % will probably be good enough to make the 8 even if we lose

Put this up last week. Shows our drop off in fwd line efficiency. Against StK it was better but was functioning better earlier in the year.....

Well, there you go. It is comforting when the numbers back up my own eyes...

I vaguely recall a change in AFL rules following on from the Essendon saga which specifically gave the doctors the final say on treatment and player availability. Am I mis-remembering?

Great to see so many doctors and specialists (of the medical variety) on Demonland.

I have an appointment with a cardiologist next week for a slightly dodgy ticker, but obviously I can just cancel it and get informed and expert opinion here on treatment and recovery.

Has anyone else noticed that Bontempelli ALWAYS tips against the Dees in the Herald Sun footy tipping?  What's that all about? !!

He thinks James Frawley is still marshalling our defence.

It was another strong season from McVee who spent most of his time mainly at half back but he also looked at home on a few occasions when he was moved into the midfield.
