he's been out for 6 weeks and is not a first 22 lock so I just assumed he would definately need to get some match fitness/form at casey

Bugg and Ben Ken are both ideally placed to give Petracca a week off.

He looks dispirited if he doesnt get a couple of touches early on in the game. Of course Im only observing from the sidelines, but I think he needs a week off to freshen up.

So Watts is left out for attitude reasons, has a okay (at very best) game for Casey and people want him back in?

 

Really? He has to earn it. Guys like BenKen have been busting their arses all year long at Casey and cant get a sniff.

In what way didn't we support Bugg or, as you've put it, "hung him out to dry"? I don't recall any such behaviour.

I would have Watts ahead of Kennedy every day of the week.

Although getting good numbers, according to Casey reports from Plapp, Kennedy needs to use the ball better and have more influence in games. 

I can't remember if Kennedy has even been an emergency this year.

Have a look at what Chris Scott, Hardwick or Buckley and numerous other coaches do when a player is reported. They support their player through the media and push to try and get the best result - regardless of the players actions. Richmond even went as far as getting references from Wally Aly and tried to manufacture one from the Prime Minister. We did nothing except throw him to the wolves.

At the very least our club could have come out and said "Bugg has apologised", "it was a reflex action", "Mills initiated contact first" etc Instead  they came out and said  "it's clearly not how we want to be seen as a footy club" "we'll cop what we get" etc. The Club's advocate Ian Findlay basically threw himself at the mercy of the MRP and basically didn't try to argue a case for getting a suspension no longer than Houli's. The hearing lasted 9 minuts. He said "He comes here tonight not to try to get the charge downgraded, not to waste your time." The fact that the incident happened the week after Houli meant their was a frenzy of media coverage about Bugg.  At the very least they should have been saying "Its no worse than Bacher Houli" It may not have worked but he deserved that possibility.  Instead he was left to front the media by himself with no club representative there when he made his statement to the media.

According to Plapp Watts did what he had to do.

He is so far ahead of Weid at this stage it is a no brainer. Weid may be good in time, but at the moment he is a liability. 

They may also bring in Frost as Lions have a number of talls and he adds pace as well as height, not to mention unpredictability.

This is one of Demonland's ongoing myths. No, he should not/need not dominate at VFL. On the other hand, he should work on/execute what he's been sent to the VFL to work on/execute. If that results in him dominating, so be it, but it's not the criteria. Good VFL players have been dominating at VFL level for years, but that does not make them AFL players. And vice-versa.

My understanding is that Watts played largely in the ruck, where he's only really a pinch-hitter and is never going to dominate. Did he do enough? It's for the coaches to decide, only they know what they were looking for in his performance.

Hard to argue against that. It was a stupid act, but he didn't receive any club support at all.

Interesting. I wonder whether the non-support was strategic to try and get a lighter sentence (on the basis that it's hard to defend foolishness) or to force Bugg to be more accountable for his own actions rather than relying on the club to defend him. I'm not arguing the club was either right or wrong - just wondering why that approach was taken. Perhaps there was no strategic thinking at all, although given we seem to do everything else off-field so well now, I think that's unlikely.

Demons co-captain Jack Viney arrived at the club on crutches on Monday morning, but it's not uncommon for players to be put in moonboots or crutches the day after a game to remove some load, according to Misson.

Viney has been pulling up sore after games following the surgery he had on the plantar fascia in his foot in July.

Melbourne is not ruling out star forward Jesse Hogan as he continues his rehab from a broken collarbone.

Hogan started running last week and Misson said Hogan was 2-3 weeks away from a return.

"Jesse's tracking really well. He's starting to do more running in footy out on the track," he said. 

"He's starting to lift heavier [weights] in the gym, but he's still got a few boxes to tick."

I love Jack, my favourite player, but because he was dropped for form and not rested I'd  prefer him to do something before he comes back in.  Beat up on a VFL side and come back for Collingwood.

I previously said jack is my favourite player and he is...but if you look at Jack's previous two games and compare to Weid yesterday Weid did way more.  We were watching him closely at the ground and whilst he needs a few kgs he did what Jack hasnt done well for a while... competed in the air, and tackled.  Earn it Jack, I know how valuable you can be !

Viney is clearly getting jabbed to the max to play. Saw him running after his man late in the last quarter and was hobbling really badly and struggled to keep up. With a full complement of mids to choose from he needs to get himself fixed and others need to stand up. 

Petracca looks as though he needs a rest. No VFL or AFL. No coincidence Hannan improved in the last quarter as others tired coming off a weeks rest
