It's not just the big marks.

It's the workrate, and the effort he puts in to even a contest if he can't mark it. The one where Henderson looked a monty to mark it but he got there just in the nick of time and brought it to ground, leading to a Spargo goal, was a perfect example.

I hate Eddie McGuire, but last night in the coverage he made the observation that Brown got traded from a club who thought he was superfluous and went on to get a wooden spoon, whilst he is now the key forward in a team in the grand final. Pretty good switch for him.

Also Cats are paying Cameron $900,000 a year. I don’t know how much we are paying Big Ben but I doubt it is anywhere near that

He takes seven weeks to be picked for his Melbourne debut. He plays three weeks and is dropped for two months.

And now, miraculously, Brown finds himself playing in his first grand final, not at the MCG but at Optus Stadium in Perth. And not as a focal point, but as a role player.

“I’ve probably had to come to terms with a lot in the last 12 to 18 months in terms of my own game and I just come back [and] try to do the things the team wants me to do,” Brown told The Age.

“At times, it’s jumping and marking the ball and at other times it was just scrapping it on the ground from out of position and I think that’s definitely something I’ve improved on this year.

“I probably needed to find my best football again. So going back into the VFL was the best thing that could have happened to me.

“The reality is, after six weeks in the VFL I knew in my own head that I was ready to come back and have an impact on the team.”

It’s uncomfortable to describe a 200-centimetre forward with an elongated run-up and unique hair as a role player, but that’s exactly how Brown views himself in his new team.

“It’s then a luxury to come in and play in a team with so many good people and so many good AFL players. They’ve made it easy for me,” he said.

“It’s great to be part of a forward line that has so many prongs to it. You’ve got Tom McDonald who’s been outstanding this year. Bayley Fritsch has kicked over 50 goals as a hybrid forward, then you’ve got Kosi Pickett. And when you have the luxury of Max Gawn and Christian Petracca to pop into your forward line, it does make it easier as a key forward.”

The statistics from the preliminary final will state that Brown had eight disposals and kicked two goals.

But inside Melbourne they talk privately about the contests he gets to and the balls that he brought to ground, on top of the seven marks he took.

Brown is not the goal-kicking machine that he was at North Melbourne, but he’s also not asked to be. His biggest haul at the Demons is four goals against Gold Coast.

But on Friday night he occupied Geelong’s best defender Mark Blicavs, and it would be hard to argue that he didn’t win that battle.

Like many of his teammates, Brown is missing his family. According to Brown, he has several video calls a day with “my girls”; wife Hester and daughters Aila and Esme.

Reported 4 year deal at either $400k or $500k I heard both around trade time last year.

He is 28 and I think he will be able to play similar footy for the life of that contract.

But who cares what happens after Saturday week if he can contribute to a flag.

10 pressure acts really showed his value. 

Have the same feeling. His marking is so strong and while always a lead up fwd he has done pretty well in packs lately getting the ball to ground.

This is not an indictment on Sam w but since bbb has settled in clubs have found it much harder to take intercept marks against us and our fwds have been locking the ball inside our fifty much more.

With crumbers in Kozxie, Nibbler, Spargo and even Fritta to a degree our fwd line is as good as its been since 2018 if not better.

If Tmac plays his best it will be very interesting.Notwithstanding Max now as accurate as ever and recently kicking five...he may spend more time there

I have noticed Bbb coming down the ground marking like Tmac used to. Would love to see Tom do this. Some early touches will give him some confidence.

Ben Brown. 

We knew he had knee problems at Nth and we picked him to help us climb the mountain. After overcoming the knee injury he was able to get onfield and was a key part of the team to get us into the finals. 

IN 2021 🏆🏆🏆He did it. We did it. We won the GF. 13 games. 25 goals. 3 important goals in the GF. 👏👏👏
 

In 2022 his form continued to be solid but started to taper off at late seasons end. 30 goals in 19 games. Only one goal in the two disastrous finals. 
 

2023 started brightly with 8 goals in the first two games. Then an injury and we had a slow recovery finally getting back by round 16. But 2 goals in the next 4 games. Dropped/injured. He could hardly run after half time in the last two games. He then never really appeared at Casey or the Dees. 
 

It wasn’t mentioned but the Dees missed his forward line marking and leading.  It wasn’t mentioned by the media. A forgotten man.
 

I am not sure he goes on in 2024.  He’s contracted for one more year.  I am not sure we have the luxury of BBB and Tmcd taking up precious list spots if their bodies are shot.  His knee is hopefully able to give it one more go. But he’s climbed the mountain. How much more can he give.

Would have liked him to have played the Carlton semi final given we were missing goal kicking avenues in Petty, Melksham and JVR (who kicked a combined 14 goals between them against Richmond).

I would also like him to go on, but there has to be some confidence from both parties that his knee will hold up next year rather then spending half the season in the medical room.

Multiple posters in the B&F thread were apparently told he will be playing on.

This was posted on another thread but BBB's wife gave him a nice social media montage and said "You are also bloody good at the sportsball on the field and with that knee looking better and ready to get moving I know that season 11 will have more highs for you. You deserve it.'
