Hard to believe after the start we had that we were only down by 21 at 3/4 time. We showed a lot of that fighting quality we are developing in the 2nd and 3rd quarter but unfortunately we were way too far behind from the get go.

Difficult not to feel completely deflated after the ending to that game though. Given the context of the game with injuries, quality of the Crows, the early deficit etc, losing by 3-4 goals would have hurt a hell of a lot less than 7 goals.

Jayden Hunt, what a goal though. Obviously had to do something spectacular after being denied that non-goal the previous week!

TBH at VFL level he was adequate-good from the 3-4 games I have watched him play.

Sure he gets the ball but he is not sufficiently damaging when he does get it. Many of his possessions are hot handpasses to a hotter team mate etc. I have never seen him really nail a handpass to advantage a la Oliver.

Hopefully the next few games allow him to shine but I think he will forever be a useful depth player.

Love to be proved wrong because from watching him closely at VFL level he has a high degree of infectious enthusiasm which is great to see in a modern day footballer.

Bit different having reoccurring  6 day breaks at the start of the season compared to two thirds of the way through the season, when most players are carrying niggles somewhere or other....

Also the claim the Eagles supporters didn't whinge about their 6 day breaks is unsupported by evidence. I bet they whinged like mad.

In an even professional competition every little bit you do to get an advantage is worth doing.  And likelwise every little obstacle that is thrown in your way is going to make things harder.  To  take the hairy-chested attitude that some posters do and dismiss bad or unfair draws as a factor is just silly.  While Goodwin wisely doesn't grumble about the draw, I bet he'd prefer a better one.

TBH our supporters sound like a bunch of princesses complaining about a 6 day break. I'm glad I haven't heard Goodwin whinge about this. This is a professional sport, if we can't get the team motivated and ready after a 6 day break then we don't deserve to be playing finals. I really didn't like the quote that we played 4 games in 18 days. The eagles did the same thing in rounds 1-4 this year March 26 to April 13, travelled twice to Melbourne in that time but you don't hear them complaining. Collingwood also did it this year round 5-8 April 25 - May 13. I remember Buckley complaining about 5 day break between Anzac day their next game and thinking he should suck it up. Our supporters need to do the same.

Also find it surprising why the same supporters don't quote that we had a two week break before the run and why we weren't rusty from the all the time off! Stats can also be quoted to go the other way.

Goodwin would be seething inside don't you worry, he can't be seen making an issue out of it can he? He's the face of the club. So you think he's doing back flips and somersaults with this part of the season?

I acknowledge we have been no good in the middle of the ground in the last 3 games but have you noticed all the teams are getting us around the wings in the last 2-3 weeks coz they know we are physically up against it and we can't close up the ground quick enough anyone noticed this if not have a look at the games over this period. This has been and issue on the G this year and it is exasperated in this tough period.

Ive missed a fair few previous posts so forgive me if you've said it elsewhere.

But i giggled at the praise on JKH and criticism of Frost. I just thought it was a little harsh on frosty considering a lot of our players fumbled all night. I can pick at least  2 or 3 occassions in thr 2nd half where JKH directly also turned the ball over across half forward whixh Adel rebounded for goals.

No one player had anymore impact on thr loss then another Imo.

Just different perspectives I guess

Yeah. Still. I'm amazed he has the chops for it. I didn't think skill and build wise he'd know how to execute. Certainly from what I knew about him beforehand. Thoight he'd need more protection. It's something. Chalk up another point to the coaches for making it happen.

It was midway through the season right after we come off a bye...

Sure it's not ideal but every team has challenges throughout the season. Not one team would have an ideal run throughout the whole year and I can guarantee you that we certainly do not have the worst draw. Imagine having to travel every second week.

So I'm watching the replay, only from the second half though. Thoughts from 3rd quarter are that once we started lowering the eyes and moving the ball around we looked a lot better, the effort but lacked a lot of class.

JKH was in amongst it and didn't look out of his depth which is good, give him some time and who knows he could surprise.

Our biggest problem which has been talked about a lot is our poor forward entries. It's a highlight (or lowlight depending on how you look at it) of our play whenever we're not on song where we don't lower the eyes and spot up a target, someone needs to be able to lead by example and show the others what to do.

For what it's worth I think the players will move on pretty quickly, we're playing at the G, against a team who haven't beaten anyone genuine next, and we're getting back key players. We beat Port and the season is well and truly back on track.

The difference between your post and mine is that you stated something as a fact unsupported by evidence.  I merely pointed that out and said "I bet... <the opposite>"  There is a difference.

I agree that WA etc teams have the worst draw in terms of travel.   Somewhat balanced by having a real home ground advantage which many Vic teams don't have anymore.  The fact that there will never be a 100% fair draw is no reason not to push for a fairer draw for our club.

I was already to fire off an e-mail saying that it was a stretch to consider after 16 rounds a top 4 club hasn't beaten anyone genuine yet, but looking at their results, thats astounding that a club with such a high percentage has really not beaten anyone of substance!!!  People lambast WCE for being flat track bullies, they don't have anything on Port this season!

Sydney Swans 12.10 (82) lost to Port Adelaide 17.8 (110) SCG

Port Adelaide 22.13 (145) beat Fremantle 8.8 (56) AO

Port Adelaide 12.11 (83) lost to Adelaide Crows 15.10 (100) AO

GWS Giants 16.16 (112) beat Port Adelaide 11.15 (81) UNSW

Port Adelaide 20.17 (137) beat Carlton 6.11 (47) AO

Brisbane Lions 10.7 (67) lost to Port Adelaide 22.18 (150) G

Port Adelaide 12.15 (87) lost to West Coast Eagles 15.7 (97) AO

Gold Coast Suns 4.14 (38) lost to Port Adelaide 16.14 (110) JS

Geelong Cats 11.15 (81) beat Port Adelaide 11.13 (79) SS

Port Adelaide 13.20 (98) beat Hawthorn 7.5 (47) AO

Essendon 19.17 (131) beat Port Adelaide 8.13 (61)   ES

Port Adelaide 18.13 (121) beat Brisbane Lions 12.9 (81) AO

Collingwood 9.8 (62) lost to Port Adelaide 13.15 (93) MCG

Port Adelaide 8.15 (63) lost to Richmond 11.10 (76) AO

West Coast Eagles 13.10 (88) lost to Port Adelaide 18.12 (120) DS

Port Adelaide 19.13 (127) beat North Melbourne 8.9 (57) AO

I don't think any of their wins have been against teams above them, and they haven't beaten any serious 'contenders' (I guess splitting the WCE game, and excluding the Sydney result in round 1)
Doesn't mean that we are a shoe in by any stretch, and they have won at the MCG this year already. But if we can get Watts, Tyson and possibly Viney back this week, and with Gawn and Hogan hopefully a bit more 'match fit' we are definitely in this game!

Port Adelaide are nothing to fear.

As long as we come ready to play and bring the maniacal pressure we are becoming known for, we will belt them.

Don't know about the players, but that was the moment I gave up. Such a demoralising error given we had control of the ball and the momentum from the break.

It's those little things that we don't do well enough that hold this team back.

Adelaide's first goal of the second-half was also the direct result of a Frost turnover.

He had two players to handball to but because he doesn't possess a natural footballer's brain, he decides to take on an opponent when it was completely unnecessary.

He is an athlete playing footy. Draft me a pudgy footballer over a sleek athlete playing football.

I quite like Frost, the little skill errors are throughout the team not just him, these include:

  • Fumbling the ball too often
  • Tackles not sticking and being too easy to run through or around
  • Not getting back behind the mark quick enough when not immediately playing on after mark or free kick
  • Accidentally moving off the line after mark or free kick resulting in the umpire calling play on
  • Playing on after a mark or free kick while opposition players are nearby
  • Knowing when to release the ball when tackled, for example knowing what you can get away with when the player has not had prior opportunity

i think your wrong Dee, i did a straw poll with the players and they whispered to me that they prefer six day breaks early rather than later, because it was too hard and less hours in the day.....

Yeah it really epitomised his game for the night, when we needed the first goal to cough up possession so easily (and almost comically) gifting the first goal, I'm sure it would've destroyed any confidence or momentum Hunts torp had generated.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
