Simon Goodwin and Culture

Featured Replies

Just watched Goodwin's press conference where he was asked about the culture issue.

The next 2 1/2 minutes are worth bottling and a must view. It was as if he just wanted the question and his opportunity toย then theorise about what makes a good cultutre and what he and the club are doing about it.

Coach of the year material and we're lucky to have him.

Its as if he was sending the players the message, but just via the presser. And how in tune the leadership group is with him.

Well done Simon.

ย

I saw it too - best post match presser that I have ever seen.

He has brought something very special to our club - kudos to PJ and Roos (and all others involved) in getting him to us, and for a fantastic succession plan*

I'm so happy that this great man is the leader of our club.

Goodwin's response to the culture and discipline question was priceless and showed that he has a very steely resolve.ย  I was in awe listening to him.ย  A class act in every way.

Compare that to the pithy, sanctimonious cheap shots by Bolton before the game.ย  He said: "...We haven't crossed the edge there and had ridiculous reports or anything...Our players are human and they understand what went on last time, but our players are not only disciplined, they are professionals..."We need our team to play on the edge, but just as importantly we need our team to stay disciplined, which they have all year."

Complete lack of class by Bolton.ย  And stupid for a coach to buy into media histrionics.

I don't know whether Goodwin saw Bolton's comments.ย  But beating Bolton's so called 'disciplined and professional', sniping marshmallows and Goodwin's staunch and passionate comments were a perfect response.

I loved how he called the media out for their rubbish articles.ย

Armchair experts need to be pulled in line from time to timeย

Ditto for all that is above. The journo hung out a stupid bait, Goodwin ignored it and gave the media a 2.5 minute sermon on who we are and what we are about, with an unspoken but very loud "and we don't give w flying f*** what any of you think".ย

I am now an offical Goodwin fan. Loved it.ย

Loved it watched twice so far, i thought Goody was about to let loose but kept it together and smacked that Jay reporter with one of the best responses i have ever heard.

ย

If we cast our minds back to 2007-08,ย the media would constantly churn out articles saying the exact same thing about Hawthorn.

Quality individual, leading the way with a group of individuals acting as one.

Goody will be our next premiership coach if he can have a full list to choose from.

Massive effort from the Coach today, we shouldn't have won that, but we did.

9-6 looks so much stronger than 8-7

Winning Ugly still gets 4 points.

More players should be ready next week

The bit on culture was a real 'don't mess with me' speech.ย  The reporters must have been spellbound as there was a hush afterwards for a few seconds where you could hear a pin drop.

Huge respect earnt by Goodwin from the media today.

I absolutely love how when we win goody gets down on the ground and gets around the players! When was the last time a Melbourne coach had this sort of rapport with the Melbourne players??ย

When he speaks he commands respect

Daniher used to charge onto the ground and leap onto players backs! ย They loved him.

I loved that post march presser. One of the best I've seen with clear and confident messages to everyone. Also loved he gave a look down the camera barrel after delivering his sermon about culture, just utter confidence and belief that look was. He's made a few strange choice this year, but overall he's doing a great job for a first year senior coach!

Simon has a few black marks against his name from a social 'cultural' perspective. And was basically telling the media that we're there to win football games, and what the media thinks is good culture is different to what he thinks is good culture.

I think Neeldy did it a couple of times.

Spot on!ย

I was about to hit the sack but i reminded myself to watch the presser.

Result- Can't sleep now after watching that. You could see the flames in his eyes.

Brilliant work Simon!!!!

The imbeciles are there to ask questions about the match that just concluded.

ย

It is a ripper of a press conference. ย It is probably the best I have seen by any coach in a long time.

ย

Usually get a good eye roll workout listening to cliches in press conferences.ย

This was the first time in a long time or perhaps ever, I've sat up and taken notice of what was being said.ย

One of the best. I think we've got a good'un.ย

Jeez he was very forthright in addressing Jay Clark's question. Very much a 'i don't care what the external world thinks culture should look like, i will decide what my teams culture will be'. A big middle finger to all the keyboard warrior Journalists and even Bolton, in thinking that their perspective on what culture is, should be universal.

Goodwin has really grown into the role of being able to present well to the media. He was scratchy when he first started as coach during the JLT series in 2016, but he is now able to compose himself and be very direct.

ย

"Look i'll sit down with Clayton, if that's what happened, i'll sit down, but clearly Clayton's not going to react to something.....unnecessarily. So let's wait and get all the information on the table eh? Before we start....criticising people"

ย

Too [censored] right! I'm not one that has developed the confidence in his coaching ability to blindly follow Goodwin, but after his press conference performance today, that blindfold isn't looking too daunting.ย

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourneโ€™s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time atย Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.

  • REPORT: Carlton

The text messages started flooding in shortly after quarter time. One read: โ€œIs Melbourne even at the ground?โ€ Moments later, as Carltonโ€™s Elijah Hollands kicked the first goal of the second term, the Blues held a commanding 43-point lead. By then, the Demonsโ€™ only score was a behind kicked by Brody Mihocek nearly five minutes into the game. Ironically, Mihocek would also register the last minor score of the day after the game took a dramatic turnaround.ย
