Taylor ( and crew ) have done very well indeed.

Its as a result of their abilities im more than happy to trade early picks to recycle or reinvigorate ( older ) players as Jason seems more than accidentally able to find gems and smokies that suit US !!

A hearty thankyou Sir(s)

Taylor gets heaps of 'Likes'!

He is the mastermind of our current list!

Not sure about the author of the article as it looks like a cut and paste of past Taylor interviews and he may well have got the idea and most of the data from our own @Stevienic23 who listed our most recent team and where they were taken in the drafts in this post:

It is a very good list, but I reckon it is our development that has made the difference more than individuals we have drafted. If that list was even slightly different I firmly now believe we would still be in a good position because our development model and personnel are top notch.

Having said that, the recruiting of players like Hunt, Hannan and Joel Smith has been daring, different and very smart.

He's done a great job, I wonder how many other clubs will now be looking to only use their 1st round pick, then try and fill gaps sending their second rounder on? They have done seriously well with those later picks, but as M38 said, I think credit also needs to go to the development team, there was an article about Rob Jackson in the HS today, detailing the program they put in place for some of those later picks. This touches on not only the strength/weight stuff they do but also ensuring there not overloaded to retain running endurance.

It's a good read - http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/teams/melbourne/strength-and-conditioning-coach-rob-jackson-has-helped-transform-the-demons/news-story/f5baa806b3494026410636dd56033611 (sorry about the paywall).

I am a hardline - 'you have got to get the big decisions right' - person and those are ND9 in 2013, ND2 and 3 in 2014 and ND4 and 9 in 2015.

Those decisions have to bring you solid 200 game players and one or two stars of the game. They just have to.

Salem, Petracca, Brayshaw, Oliver, and Weideman is what we got with those top 10 picks. Two look like being stars of the game. One looks like being a solid 200 gamer, one will be if he can regain health, and one still has a question mark but is developing normally for a KPF.

That is a success relative to other clubs.

That is a ridiculous haul of awesomeness compared to previous investments by the MFC.

Note: You can argue that the club turned ND2 in 2013 into Tyson and two upgraded picks that got Salem and Hunt but that was a club decision, not Taylor's drafting leadership decision.

The 'is it drafting or is it development' debate is much more fun when we're debating why it seems to have worked.

One might almost suspect that in a good system at a good club, each supports the other.

"We need players like this... hmm... how do you reckon you'd go developing this kid, and tell me, do you think this talented puppy-fat midfielder could be transformed into a full-game player?"

Agreed, it is really a perfect storm that is driving the improvement. Jason, Todd and the recruiting team, Brendan Macartney's development work in no small measure, Roosy & finally Goody as well as the coaching team around them. Everyone deserves a lick of the ice cream if we can turn this momentum into something special.

Guys like Hunt, ANB, Harmes would have struggled at the club between 2008 and 2013. Coaching personalle and development can't be understated. It's so much more than drafting talent. They were all very raw, hence the deep draft position.

I have been a huge believer that our development of players  and the club in general was so poor in the past that many players we drafted who would have probably made it in the current environment failed miserably.  It took a footballer of extraordinary determination like Jones to make it in the cesspool that was our club. "Your are a top draft pick - go and play football" is not the way to develop players. To me Roo's greatest legacy is the teaching and developing culture he installed in the club -  teachers the likes of McCarthy being onboard cannot be emphasised enough as key to our current upward trend.

Having said that, we have certainly opted towards "competitive beasts" in our drafting of late and that has paid dividends.

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k
