If our circumstances/needs were different I would chase hard after May.  He has strengths and weaknesses, but his physical strength is a massive plus, which can be used as a structure point for defending inside our defensive 50.

Although none of the Casey boys are ready now, who knows what transpires after 1 good pre-season. And OMac is nowhere finished his physical development. He is still young and could emerge as something quite different to what he is now. 

Our three tall backs - Frost, OMac & Lever - make a very strong back structure, with varied strengths which compliment each other. I wouldn't want to stuff it up by moving someone in that means moving someone who is currently effective out.

I have some (heresay) reservations about May, but I do like that he would add some surety, and an element of hardness to our defence.  However, that amount of coin and duration do seem a bit 'Rance like' to me.  I thought it was most likely his manager 'flying a kite' but I'd be the first to acknowledge that I know absolutely zilch about these things.  The principles of supply and demand for ready made key defenders would surely come into it, and there aren't too many of them around.

I’m the same DOF, I don’t know much about these things either and only quoted you to continue with the AFL Tonight theme that you mentioned.  I was surprised to hear such a figure to be honest, especially with reports that Hogan is on that type of money at the moment as possibly our highest paid player. 

It could well be a case of May trying to get best possible price for himself. I was told last week in Perth the meeting between May and us was initiated by May’s management only a couple of weeks ago which I believe has already been mentioned on here. I’m not sure how reliable that is as I remember another poster mentioning these talks have been ongoing for a while now.

 I have it on good authority that our coach and one of our senior players had drinks/dinner with May last night.

Thanks for the info Jane. I must admit I don’t understand the need.

Trading May in will require us to spend a fair bit of the capital we get from any Hogan trade, in terms of salary cap and picks, on yet another key defender (Lever, Frost, O Mac, Petty, Keilty) 

Yes May would improve our back six to a degree but at significant cost. 

Interesting that in the last few years we have let go two 'gorilla' type defenders and an intercept defender in Frawley, Dunne and Howe.  We are now replacing them with the likes of Lever and maybe May. 

In the meantime our 'rejects' have gone on to win a premiership, play in a grand final and if Dunne wasn't injured he would also be playing tomorrow.

Not at all suggesting we should have kept the 3.  They all needed a fresh start and we got fair value.  Just reflecting on how ironic the AFL trade merry-go-round can be...

I can 100% see the need. 

The top teams will all have a strong forward which can get off the leash against us. 

Every time we come up against a team with a key forward we know where our biggest weakness is. Sure they might not always crush us however it always causes us to change or defensive structures. 

Lever isn't really a one on one defender, he will takes Lewis' role next year.

We dont know whether Lever, Omac, Frost would really work as we only played the three of them together once I believe in round 3. Based on us choosing to not though at the time it was clearly not our preferred set up. This is my take though on the situation based on each player.

Lever is an emerging super star who will play better in his customary role as the third tall/marshall the backline. He will in essence replace the Lewis role in my view next year. 

People have got over excited by Frost having a good month of footy. I will still remember how many marks he misjudged under pressure and cant see him playing more consistent footy than what he showed. He has good dash and has improved his decision making and execution but I will never trust him fully. I would trade him whilst his value is at its highest.

Oscar is trending toward developing into a very good player. When I watch him though I think second quality tall like Astbury or  Hooker  or Thomson rather than a Rance or Hurley  or Tarrant. Whilst he will get stronger and will improve his athleticism he will never be fast off the mark and I doubt will ever be aggressive. This is where May comes in.

May played on Hawkins in the last game of the year when the Cats smashed them by 100 points. Hawkins kicked 2 goals. Ben Brown kicked 4 goals across 2 games on him. Buddy was held goal less the one game they played against them whilst May took 14 marks. The only one that really beat him all year was a Kennedy with a 5 goal performance in an 80 point West Coast demolition. He is a quality player with a competitive aggressive streak and that has been in a low team with poor culture and development. He will be better than he already has shown with us and that says alot.

In terms of the money, it has been reported a few times that GC are having to pay overs for players to stay which is why (hilariously) they are dealing with salary cap issues even with loosing Lynch. 

I dont have the article on hand, but I think it was in about July, August when they were talking about the move to Collingwood it would be on less dollars than what he'd make on the Gold Coast in order to fit in with the contracts of the club. I would hope that this would be the same case for us. 

I cannot imagine that our dollar and year offer is that different than Collingwood's. It will be a lot less than the GC's year and dollar offer though which I'm sure is one of the things May has to weight up.

As we well know, bad teams breed the best back men, we’ve exported 3 quality backs in the last decade. 

So now the tide has turned we need in back, and May having played at the lowly Suns knows how to defend to the oft bitter end.

My memory might be hazy, but did we really let Frawley and Howe go, or did they decide to leave?  I know that we netted pick #3 for Frawley when he left, but I can recall us trying to re-sign him throughout the year.  Howe wanted out so there wasn't a whole lot we could do there.

Is May an elite defender though? Happy to have him, but he's certainly (for me) not in the same class as McGovern.

Spends too much time at the tribunal getting suspended for my liking. Wouldn't bother.

My memory was that Roos played him forward for the entire year...not to test others out, but to ensure our back line could learn to play without him... it was so effing obvious from round 3....

Today proved and showed today why its important to have genuine high talent defenders.

McGovern and Barrass won them the game today.
