Why can't it be as simple as Watts and pick 10? Why does there need to be multiple trades?

Because 10 and 27 is simple and Watts and Lever are both known qualities and would augment our best 22!

This is the most done deal on gut-feel in recent MFC history*. Well, maybe Hibberd as well. We're gonna pay what feels like slight overs in wage and trade, and then we're all going to forget about after Round One, 2018,  just like Hibberd this year.

*So why do I insistently keep checking this thread for any hint of an indicative rumour?

I'm doing exactly the same.

I put it down to the fact that it's not actually a done deal, and I really want it to be a done deal.

It's also why I'll be supporting the Tigers hard on Sat. I don't want Lever to feel ultra bonded with the Crows if they win and then for him to do something really stupid like sign a new contract with them.

He needs to climb Everest for the first time with this club.

If he decides to stay, surely the club has a plan B although that wasn't evident during some games this season.

I can't think of anyone else the club would be targeting if this fails.

nothing will eventuate til Monday

It was probably abut half way through the season Skuit, once he got on the park and had a few games under his belt, all forgotten. That's why I find the hang wringing on these threads quite amusing. Until they have played for us you just don't know how it all plays out let alone we have no idea of the actual $4 or trade at this point.

Just say we pay him $900

in years 3,4,5 this will be peanuts for such a quality player

by the way the deals already gone, he's coming like it or not.

Oscar is an honest toiler who may make it. He hasn't yet but I believe he shows good promise

Deal of the century.  Sign him up now!

I was about to say "I will pay that myself!"

And then I thought, 'nah, I can't afford that.'

I need to buy a new skillet...

What is the likely trade being discussed.

Ron, alternatively if they win he might be more prepared to leave having achieved the ultimate and knowing back to back is rare. If they lose he might stick around and think they're so close we'll get it next year and they are way ahead of that happening at Dees.

This is why you've just convinced me to support the Crows on Saturday

As the old saying goes it's near yet so far away. To bad we son't know any who could tell us if the moving truck has been booked?

That I don't know. Was told 3 weeks ago that we got him, that's all I know

Is it just my impression or has this thread moved along at close to a post a minute?

Incredible.

Can a mod put a 'sticky' on the first page to update any actual news, just so nobody feels a need to slide through dozens of pages?

More likely to leave if they win, they have so many defenders to cover him, Smith and McGovern are out they are both best 22

I'm having this very debate with a mate at the moment.

Is Lever more likely to want to leave the Crows following a Grand Final win or a loss?

I dunno really - I just suspect a loss will leave him less bonded with the Crows than a win.

I'd suspect the decision to leave was probably made 3-6 months ago. I don't think the result will have any bearing on what happens after the GF.

Yeah I'm of this opinion too. He'll always be ultra bonded if they win, but he'll have no guilt if he leaves. I feel a bit for the crows after what they have been thru and losing quality players to other clubs. Winning the flag would help my guilt too!

So I have just thought of a theory that I would like some clarity on.

Melbourne has been very good over the last 3 years at manufacturing crafty deals. This could be the best of the lot.

Jake Lever is out of contract. Therefore if an agreement between Melbourne and Adelaide doesn’t eventuate, he goes into the pre season draft.

Strategy: meet with the lions privately and say we will give you a 2nd round pick in the 2018 draft for your number 1 pick in the 2018 pre season draft. (I can’t recall a club ever trading pre season picks?? But surely it’s possible)

Tell them it’s an insurance play just in case we can’t agree with Adelaide. Lever walks into our arms for a 2nd rounder. Brisbane is v happy.

Thoughts?

Preseason draft picks can’t be traded

Melbourne have been above board and open in trading and wouldn’t engage in such subterfuge

It ain’t the Veale deal days anymore

Haha the way he answered it seems he's gone. If you weren't you would say nah mate not going anywhere.

How else would he answer the question?

The journo had a decent crack at him, tried to get a bite at least 3 times.

  • PREVIEW: St. Kilda

The media has performed a complete reversal in its coverage of the Melbourne Football Club over the past month and a half. Having endured intense criticism from all quarters in the press, which continually identified new avenues for scrutiny of every aspect, both on and off the field, and prematurely speculated about the departures of coaches, players, officials, and various employees from a club that lost its first five matches and appeared out of finals contention, the narrative has suddenly shifted to one of unbridled optimism.  The Demons have won five of their last six matches, positioning themselves just one game (and a considerable amount of percentage) outside the top eight at the halfway mark of the season. They still trail the primary contenders and remain far from assured of a finals berth.

  • REPORT: Sydney

A few weeks ago, I visited a fellow Melbourne Football Club supporter in hospital, and our conversation inevitably shifted from his health diagnosis to the well-being of our football team. Like him, Melbourne had faced challenges in recent months, but an intervention - in his case, surgery, and in the team's case, a change in game style - had brought about much improvement.  The team's professionals had altered its game style from a pedestrian and slow-moving approach, which yielded an average of merely 60 points for five winless games, to a faster and more direct style. This shift led to three consecutive wins and a strong competitive effort in the fourth game, albeit with a tired finish against Hawthorn, a strong premiership contender.  As we discussed our team's recent health improvement, I shared my observations on the changes within the team, including the refreshed style, the introduction of new young talent, such as rising stars Caleb Windsor, Harvey Langford, and Xavier Lindsay, and the rebranding of Kozzy Pickett from a small forward to a midfield machine who can still get among the goals. I also highlighted the dominance of captain Max Gawn in the ruck and the resurgence in form in a big way of midfield superstars Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver.
