Gus is a super talent and the quicker he gets back to AFL the better. 

If Angus hits form in the next month he could be the perfect addition for September. 

I'm actually wondering about the logic in him wearing the head gear.  Quite counterintuitivly all that I have ever read is that the research says they are in effective in preventing concussions (something about the brain still floating around and hitting the inside of the skull, despite the padding from the helmet).

I actually wonder if the headgear is actually as much to remind Guss he has one (a head) and that it needs protecting, much like taping an ankle or a shoulder tells the mussels around it to tighten and that's the part which does the good.

Although not technically protecting him much, some players wear it to give them a bit of confidence. I think it might be the case here.

Who said prevent concussion? 

Is it possible that a soft helmet could reduce the severity of the concussion by slowing down the deceleration?

The problem with this ongoing argument is that little value is placed in minimizing concussion, and people keep saying that helmets don't prevent concussion.

Air bags and seat-belts do not prevent road accident injuries, so why use them?

I see the helmet debate has resurfaced.

Does anyone know why Celeb Daniel wears one?  Has he  a history of concussions?  And the StKilda dude who wore one for many years - name escapes me (dementia)?

If he feels better wearing one, why not?  What proven negatives?

Nathan Burke I suspect you are referring to.

I can't see a negative, and perhaps it might be more of a 'mental reminder' to him of remembering not to lead with the head, but agreed, I can't think of a negative other than how it looks

I read that having a helmet creates a bigger target to get hit but that doesn't make a lot of sense to me given its got padding. Nathan Bourke believes he had less issues after wearing one. He's not had a lot of success without one on so its worth trying.

If there were no finals on the horizon then I would think that Angus would be happy to take the year off. Clearly he sees an opportunity to play finals and wants to play on. Just worried what another concussion would mean for his health, well being, and less importantly his career.

I would prefer he took the year off to be honest and looked after himself. Whilst the doc's are all over this, there is also an acknowledgement in the industry that they need/are doing more research to understand it better. There are still unknown unknowns

Daniel has worn a helmet since he was 12 and regularly cops elbows in the head from most players because of his height.

Im pretty sure Gus would not be playing ie there was any doubt about his mental health/state of mind.  A fit and confident Gus would be a huge bonus in September

Must smell a bit fishy by the final quarter 

I've heard it said that donning a helmet can give the wearer a false sense of security, tempting them to take more risks. That wasn't specific to footy though. Cbf finding a link sorry

I believe the comments by the club about teaching Gus to use his body when he enters a contest rather than his head is more paramount to his playing future. 

The helmet might work as a simple reminder. Has Gus or the club mentioned it in that way?

 

The club has said they have been working with Angus to correct a flaw in his footy technique. A flaw where he tended to lead with his head into a contest rather than lead with his body to take most of the impact.

Very pleased to hear the club has been pro-active in assessing Gus' style and making necessary adjustments to his style of play as well as being ultra cautious with his medical prognosis.

Great news for all and I cant wait to see Gus out there again and then fulfilling his considerable  potential.

He grew up in Queensland and was a Johnathan Thurston fan.

I wear ear muffs most of my working day, countless times I've hit my head and been saved by the band connecting the muffs together, that's a strip around 40mm wide so the full head gear really should help a lot and I'm glad to see Gus wearing it. 

Some mentioning that it'll be a target, but I have a theory the opposition will be more likely to avoid it, especially in the AFL. I suspect most players don't mind hurting their foe but wouldn't want to end a career, case in point being Frosty and his concern for falling over Wingards leg. Also might help avoid the thuggery ala Gus's last concussion in the VFL. A cheap shot to the head of someone wearing a helmet really would be seen as a reprehensible and gutless act.

....which it was, but the VFL didn't seem to give a damn.

well it was pretty cold on sat night at casey, so i suspect it kept him nice and warm

I've brought it up a couple times and it's driving me nuts because I can't find any reference to it on the interweb - I have a vague persistent memory of the club having to do the exact same with a young Jack Viney. Anyone?

Maybe Saty - you could just ask him?

Something was mentioned about him doing neck weight excercises too to condition the neck muscles and prevent the severity of the whiplash. If you watch the vfl cheap shot again, there was a lot of whiplash with his head flinging back on impact.

As I've said before, Paul Callery believed wearing the helmet helped him with concussions. Gary Wilson was another, one of the greats.

I don't care if it's the placebo effect, but if it helps you Gus then please keep wearing it mate.

The pleasing thing generally, is that as a club we are now thoroughly professional in our development of our players. No more is there a one size fits all mentality.

Players with particular issues have them addressed. Whether it is technique, training/fitness, injuries, speed, game plan, 1%'s etc, we are able to work with our players to improve them and get the best out of them. 

We will end up with more AFL standard players as a result and be more successful as a result in our recruiting. 

I have come around to the development argument in the recruiting threads as a factor in so many of our recruiting failures. 

In the end you need good recruiters and proper development to get to base one,  before you can factor in things like attitude, coaching, facilities etc.

   They do not prevent injuries they reduce the incidence and reduce the severity. That is my point.
