The advantage of elevating and using the rookie draft instead of the really high draft picks to complete the list is that you can get rid of a rookie after one year. A Nat Draft pick has to retained for 2. I think Wagner has shown enough to suggest he could be worth a 2 yr contract as opposed to a highly speculative pick. White I am not so sure of. I would probably retain for another year as a rookie. 

So from here i reckon we'd go 2 bites at the draft with 47 and our next pick, and then upgrade Wagner and Smith

I still thought the media would have some love for hawthorn and the JOM deal.  Obviously not and I'm loving it !  A bigfooty hawks supporter posted that the JOM deal is the benchmark for any deal done in ANY trade period !! pfffttt!

Was quietly hoping the JOM deal would not go through that would have really have stuffed up the hawks clearance sale.

Even though they're older, the acquisition of Lewis and Hibberd is infinitely better than last year's crop of Bugg, Kennedy and Melksham, and for a lesser cost. Rate Lewis and Hibberd as being in our best 15, whereas I wouldn't rate Bugg, Kennedy and Melksham in our best 22.

Never seen McKenna play, but the NEAFL analysis of his game by game performance is uninspiring. Would have preferred one of our late picks used for Nankervis or Vardy instead.

Draft day will be boring.

Am I correct in thinking that we have to have a minimum of 3 picks in the draft. If so we have Dunne's spot open and need to delist another 2 players. From the grapevine seems Dawes is gone and I believe Newton is our last uncontracted player so possibly that makes up the 3 positions. I find it hard to pick another one from the senior list.

Speaking of a winning trade period, why is the HUN so high on the Tigers?  Okay, they added Prestia and Caddy, but their forward line and back line are still poor and they have zero outside run.  I don't get it.

For us, it's a big win.  Only matched by the Saints who sucked in the Hawks for some good picks when they were desperate.

Except they got an ordinary GWS player in Steele and a slow aging C grader in Brown. I just don't get the hype around St Kilda.

As I said, they got some very good picks for not much and they've added some more depth.  They also get Carlisle back too.

I'm not as high on them as others, but they quietly did rather well with their off season.

As for Brown, @stevethemanjordan was high on him for most of this year as the man to solve our defensive problems.  He must be rocking in a corner somewhere after he signed for free with the Saints.

Surprised Freo didn't get a mention, they did quite well in adding some players who should have an immediate impact without selling the farm.

Kersten and McCarthy will help their scoring power, Hill will be good on the spacious Subiaco and Hamling holding down a defensive post.

Then they've got 7, 18, 35, 40 to try and snap up some youth.

I have been starved for draft news  as wife and I are on a cruise Perth to Brisbane just stopped into Cairns late this arvo. So very happy with the three pick ups my daughter texted me that Lewis might be on the cards but very happy with the end result. Sorry to see Lynden go but happy with end result. Go Dee's!!!

They offloaded Vickery. Even if they had botched Prestia that would have been a win.

We also have Salem as a near new recruit, after being out for a good proportion of 2016, I'm looking forward to seeing him with a full preseason and some improvement in his health. 

He could be the surprise packet for 2017.

Remains to be seen how strong this year's draft is, compared to next year's.

We obviously believe that next year's is better, but some clubs have sold out of next year's draft, believing this year is the "super draft".

What do D'landers think? Like many others, I know nothing about the two drafts and their comparative merits.

Interesting listening to SEN discuss this. The opinion seems to be that next year has better talent at the top but drops away quickly while this year lacks great players at the top end but is very even and has unusual depth. In essence we want high picks next year while this year second and third round will still get pretty solid players.

We are in an entirely different space to the "declining"clubs Hawthorne, NM, Geelong, and possibly Sydney who have serious salary cap problems with the arrival of Tippett and Buddy. Like GWS, Suns, and the Bullies, we are chock full of young rising stars. We don't need to have anymore. What we do need is experienced leaders (Lewis), and to fill gaps eg running backs who are excellent kicks (melsham, hibberd). The one area where we have a huge gap is a ruck/forward which the club has indicated will be addressed in the draft. I personally think Spencil is under utilised and could be devestating in tandem with Max who could play more down forward. 

We are in a great position, thanks in large part to our skill recruiters and coaches over the last three years

Thyroid problems are not easy to overcome. Unfortunately we shouldn't expect too much.

In the past, we (along with other clubs) have lost star players (such as $cully and Chip) to rival clubs for either dollars or Premiership opportunities. This year we are the only Club not to have lost a top 22 player whilst we for the first time have been approached by top 22 players (Hibberd & Lewis) from other Clubs. We may be shy of a kpf/ruckman, but anything can happen. In the light of this, the biggest surprise is Prestia seeing a future in Richmond. What was his manager thinking?

No we wouldn't have. We would've traded pick 29 for a player who was just about to be delisted anyway. Probably 10 mins before the 2.00pm trade cut off.

 

 

And then celebrated the fact that we managed to land an experienced player from another club.
