2016 Player Review - # 20 Colin Garland

2016 was disappointing year for Garland, a member of the club's leadership group who, like Lynden Dunn, was sidelined by the club's desire to restructure its defence.

Like Dunny, he was so important for us for a long period of time. It's sad, but the list seems like it is going in a direction that doesn't need Garland.

He might bounce back, but if his management was clever they would be asking the dees to find him a better situation during trade week.

Col was a stalwart during our 'tough times', but unfortunately he doesn't have some of the key the attributes demanded by the evolving game style at our Club.  He is very much a 'stop / start' player to my way of thinking, and as a consequence, I suspect he will always be a weak link in our ball movement.  Further, I don't see any significant points of difference in his game (eg. pace or marking strength) which might offset this weakness. Sadly, Casey or another club's list might be his future, I suspect

I just don't get how he went from required (and given a 3 year deal to much fanfare) to surplus so quickly. I can only imagine he is struggling with the new game plan?

Biggest f' up under the Roos led Football Dept. The 3 year deal was bewildering to some of us at the time, and we were proven correct. He's been struggling as a player for 3 years now, so the new game plan had nothing to do with it.

Talk that he would be allowed to go to a new home for nothing, but there were no takers. He'll be at Casey until his contract expires.

I really like Garland as a one on one style defender, but like Dunn he has been overlooked for youth who can learn the new style from scratch.

A good club man, and good player. would like to see him trialled as a half forward if he is retained on the list for the full contract term

I wonder how he would go being the hunted rather than the hunter. Maybe not enough tricks in the bag?

Needs to reinvent himself in a different role. Not sure he can.

Just the faintest shadow of the player he was a few years ago when he finished 2nd in the B&F. His confidence looks completely shot, and he looks finished as a player.

It will be interesting to see what his mindset is like next year, because surely neither the club or the player would allow the contract to go a third year if he continues to languish in the VFL.

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    POSTGAME: Rd 09 vs Carlton

The Demons were blown out of the water in the first quarter and clawed their way back into the contest but it was a case of too little too late as they lost another close one to Carlton losing by 1 point at the MCG.
