Spoke to my mate yesterday about Barlow. He says GC has offered him a longer contract and on much bigger $$ than what we have. He also say because Barlow came into the system late and is getting on in age in footy terms we might lose out on this one now. He was totally confident a few weeks ago we would land him but not so much now.

Oh oh well let's see what plays out.

I had heard previously we were into Vardy, but nothing for a few weeks.

Durdin would be a good get.

Matera I don't see the need.

Merrett, no thanks.

Barratt i don't know much of him?

Still surprised so many are so quick to talk them down. They've averaged a premiership every 3 years for the last 15. They know what they're doing...

They won 4 in 8 years so of course it would be a great ratio.

And I definitely agree they were one of the greatest sides of all time.

I guess I believe O'meara is a massive risk and personally I'm hoping it doesn't work out well for them.

I also think Tom Mitchell is a bit over rated, gets a lot of the ball but nowhere near as damaging as a guy like Sam Mitchell, who they may be losing.

Maybe I'm biased because I want them to fail, but I just don't think they can replace these great players without going back down for a while. Plus it will get harder for them to bring in good talent as they start to realise they aren't a sure bet for top 8.

You do realise that Sam M has 1 year left whereas Tom M has possibly 10 years? Not many mids are as damaging as Sam M, but to say that Tom M. is overrated is ridiculous. He was in the top 3 players for the Swans in the GF.

The player at Hawthorn who is irreplaceable is Roughy.

Just a couple of things. Any normal footy follower would have to think that our list is pretty flush with talent ready to burst, So they, the players, are here now, so everyone relax. But i've been wrong before.

Maybe the preamble to Clarkson and Mitchell's conversation, before decisions were made, could have included something like, we are not going to make finals for a few years now mate between you and me, but what about a change of scenery and a coaching look in with extra money to kick start away from this mad house, etc etc

Rockliff apparently flying to Adelaide to talk to the Crows.

They will improve if they get Gibbs and Rockliff.

I would be happy to get Rockliff.

Really? I thought for sure Sam Mitchell had 10 years left......

It is just my opinion after watching Tom Mitchell in a number of games this year.

I'll be very interested to see how he goes for the Hawks.

Doubt they'd get both. I suspect Gibbs would be plan A, Rockliff plan B.

Freo compo for Mayne is pick 23. Think that means our second rounder is out to 30 now?

Wow Freo got way overs for him I recon.

This is the real stinker about the way free agency is presently set up.  It penalises every other team asides from the one that picked up the free agent.  Really need to be addressed.  The club recruiting the free agent should be forced to give up the compo equivalent to the value of the compo.

Also Freo will probably give that pick to the Hawks for Brad Hill who will then probably give it to GCS together with a player for O'Meara.

It's Collingwood fault, gave him a 4 year deal

it's a similar contract size to the sylvia compo, slightly bigger, and the same draft pick too.

no dramas with that one.

the whole thing is just fundamentally a joke tho. i said in jest to someone earlier today:

i've decided the mitchell to hawks deal is a complete fabrication

if he doesn't leave it's all make believe

it's just about the afl and afl media along with two complicit clubs keeping the news cycle ticking along cos there's NOTHING else happening

"after strong consideration and listening to the fans - THE FANS!! - i've decided i will be a one-club player; i just love this club too much to leave" - media release tomorrow morning

book it in

Our 2nd rounder is now 29

My summary of FA compensation picks, at the time they were handed out, is:

  • Richmond for Vickery:  Band 3, 2nd round = pick 26
  • North for Wells:  Band 3, 2nd round = pick 32
  • Freo for Mayne:  Band 3, 2nd round = pick 23

Note: but it is a moving feast so hard to track all the machinations.

Plus Brisbane priority pick impact.

Our 2nd round pick was 26 so the Brisbane pp, the Vickery and Mayne comp picks put us back 3 places, now our pick is 29.  The Wells one doesn't affect that pick as they finished higher than us on the ladder but it does put all later picks back.

Gee, Collingwood have certainly handed some big gifts to North and Freo...you have to wonder what on earth they are doing!

Here is the latest draft order with all the machinations

Essendon should seriously consider taking  next years 2nd rounder for Hibberd the way things are unfolding..

This is the sort of post i come here for. I love trade rumours haha

Agree, mate.

I'd take Matera, Vardy and Merret if we could get deals done for them. With the right attitude and environment, IMO, Matera could be a 40+ goal forward at the feet of Hogan, Weideman and Watts.

Re Mitchell to Hawks:

14 is a first rounder

sydney needed salary cap space, so needed him or someone equivalent moved on.  14 would serve for academy protection if needed.

fairly even top 20, apparently.

Mitchell wanted to get to hawthorn.

so seems like a good get for both.

What? Hawthorn are "not going to make finals for a few years"? This is getting a bit silly now...

It is a bargain, but Hawthorn didn't have pick 6 to give.

Exactly, but it's frustrating that these teams just continue to give up their lowly first round picks for established guns with 4-5 years development under their belt.

When you compare this deal to what Collingwood gave up for Treloar, it's nuts.

I'm not sure what is up with you and your hawthorn love affair but i think he is quite right. Hawks will wallow for at least 2-3 years. Probably not as cellar dwellars but definitely mid range.

And you might just want to pull your head in a bit mate, your tone is totally unnecessary and your constant carping at people with different opinions to you gets really tiresome.
