Hey Stuie, just because someone else has an opinion you don't agree with doesn't make them misguided or even wrong.

There can actually be many opinions or viewpoints on a topic and value in just exploring them rather than seeing them as an attack on our own sense of righteousness...

Yep thanks Paul, except you missed out on the person who actually started throwing that term around.. Cheers.

Yep, 1 year short of free agency, but it's likely Goody would have taken on Roos' thoughts on trading out/in players 1 year before free agency eligibility.

If we trade him in then he isn't eligible for free agency for years as the clock starts again.

Correct. But what has that got to do with this?

Because saying we're the 3rd most sought after "destination club" after Geelong and Hawthorn isn't misguided at all...

You elected to construct an argument out of thin air based on your 'definition' of whatever, such is your petty way. The original post was positive and, in my view, reflects the actual position. None of the 30,000 poorly conceived posts that you've posted since you brought on this argument have convinced me otherwise. It's merely confirmed my view that you just like to argue, with no particular logic or intellect to the stuff that frantically pump out for us to read.

The tenet is that the standout Victorian clubs at the moment would be Geelong and Hawthorn. Following that, we are a club that is absolutely in the mix as a destination for players (for a myriad of reasons) albeit with some other clubs (eg, the Pies and the Dogs).

And this the very reason most respected commentators think Goodwin has landed a great senior coaching role and why Goodwin himself is pinching himself about what the future holds for this club. Players, coaches and astute supporters get this. It's a club with enormous upside for an incoming player.

That you don't get this, and that you wish to stick to an out of date paradigm that is no longer based on the current circumstances, is a matter for you.

Interesting too that since this 'debate' started Hibberd has apparently nominated the Dees as his preferred club and it appears this was always his intention and that discussions have been occurring for several weeks. I don't expect this comes as any great surprise to most of the posters here though.

No matter how much you try to cover up your back pedaling (you've gone from "we are 3rd" to "we are a club that is absolutely in the mix... albeit with some other clubs") with lengthy paragraphs it's clear you're original assertion that we are the 3rd highest option after Geelong and Hawthorn is not based in fact. If you're relying on Hibberd to back that argument up you are on shaky ground indeed.

Have a look at the big name players that have changed clubs over the last few years, how many have come to us?

Most commentators think that about Goodwin due to his apprenticeship under Roos and inheriting an already very talented young list based mostly on excellent drafting. Yes, we are a far more attractive club success wise than we were a few years ago, but let's at least be realistic about our spot in the pecking order.

May have mis-read your post. On first reading it seemed you were talking about trading in players 1 year before they were eligible, as in they would still be eligible.

My bad.

Phssssss ! Carlton will have a fire sale, they are not afraid to bottom right out next year and completely rebuild via the draft..  Murphys on the table and Kreuzer with the red & blue very interested in the latter.

Please note the poster will in no way be held accountable for any draft outcomes, as these trade whispers where whispered in a pub.

Oh gotcha. No stress. I just remember Roos talking about the strategy of trading the year before free agency, so wouldn't be surprised to see us doing that under Goodwin. Particularly helpful for us as we've not been able to attract any good players via free agency.

Where exactly did I say that? All I said in reference to them was that they are managing to attract the preference of a fair bit of young talent. Do you disagree?

Denom is a nutter. De Goey is contracted until the end of 2018 and Collingwood need to keep all the young talent they have.

The only club, outside of Geelong and Whorethorn, that rival us as a destination club in Victoria are the Pies.  Snaffling some handy players like Treloar, Adams and Jesse White (heh) put them at least on par with us.

Having said all that, we've landed a variety of players over the last few years, all of which were extremely impressed and excited by the direction of the club.  Not only that but we've signed, outside of Hogan, ALL the players we wanted to re-sign at the club, another indication of the direction and the fact that players want to be here.

I'd disagree with the talent part.  How many of their players have worked out?  Kerridge and Wright were picked up as delisted free agents, while other players they got in like Whiley, Jaksch and Liam Jones have all been absolutely terrible.  The players we have attracted to the club have fared far, far better.

Contracted for couple more years. His off field activities are something Goodwin and McCartney wouldn't be too impressed with id image.

Kennedy? Dawes? Lumumba? Melksham? None of those have "fared far, far better" (for varying reasons).

I think where we're all differing is the definition of what a "destination club" is. I see it as a club that has to do very little to attract players to nominate them as their preferred destination. I don't think we're quite at that stage yet. We're still having to work hard on convincing players to come to us. We're heading in the right direction in this regard clearly, but as per the original post, I totally disagree we are the 3rd most attractive club in the league.

They are going places, no doubt about it, but who have they attracted to the club in recent years?  They got Boyd with a huge contract offer, but they haven't exactly done a super job at the trade table.

To be fair, they haven't been the most active club either, but I haven't seen any big name players, or mid tier players for that matter, nominating them as their club of choice.

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
