No, I understand you. I just don't think we had the conversation with him, his manager or Brisbane.

Yes, discussed him internally and ruled him out. Next...

I know for a fact that a player we were said to be into last year wasn't even approached by the club.

Not even one phone call to any related party.

Sometimes players don't fit the plan.

A couple of years ago we were heavily linked to Malceski.

When he was interviewed post trade he said he spoke to about 4 clubs and Melbourne wasn't one of them.  We didn't even inquire about him.

that brisbane press release is pretty interesting.

basically, "rocky will remain here for one more year, then he can go wherever he wants as a free agent and we'll take the compo and run".

Yup, that's how it sounded to me, Rocky is staying because no one else wants him was the way i took it

And just like Chip all they'll need to do is secure him to a long term lucrative contract with another club. I see a hole in their plan.

I think his salary demands were the big sticking point for other clubs. Plus no-one was prepared to cough up anything substantial to make the trade worthwhile to Brisbane.

It seems to me that if a club really wanted him, they could have got him.

clubs will come for rockliff at the end of next season. book it in.

he might not be a leader, but he's a ball-getter. if pies and tigers really bottom out next season, then they'll both offer him decent free agency opportunities - all it costs is cap money, nothing in a trade.

I think the club does it's due diligence on every player in the competition, particularly ones coming out of contract or into FA...

That doesn't mean that we talk with them all, their club or management.

In this case I think we would have had the discussion internally and said no. He doesn't suit our current needs.

I don't understand why people don't want to take Mahoney at his word at this stage, but I guess everyone can believe what they want.

There is a difference between talking to Rockliff and asking the Lions the question. I know that was not what was stated on Demonland, but it's entirely possible we when discussing Dunn that we also asked about Rockliff. Doesn't mean we ever spoke to Rockliff though. Doesn't mean we weren't interested in him if the planets aligned either.

Anyway, it doesn't matter now as we've clearly used up all our ammunition on getting the Lewis and Hibberd trades done.

I really do look forward to reading the spin The Zanotti Files put on this one now.

They already retracted it after the Hibberd deal.

A retraction?

They don't like giving out false information but are telling their readers that their source "is still adamant that it's still being discussed".

Heavens above.

Ah well it's silly season after all and given everything that was discussed in the thread it doesn't get much sillier!

Free agent next year, maybe have a look at him then but until that time comes we can move on.

The story on the AFL site is instructive - Lions confirm Tom Rockliff will remain at the club

"TOM ROCKLIFF will play for the Brisbane Lions in 2017, but his future at the club beyond next year remains hazy.

Rockliff's manager Tom Petroro informed the Lions that his client would see out his contract until the end of next season.

That came after Rockliff and Petroro had a meeting with newly appointed coach Chris Fagan and football manager David Noble in Melbourne last week.

Fagan will assess all the club's leadership positions in the coming weeks, with Rockliff no certainty to remain captain.

"Tom is 100 per cent committed to where we are headed and the journey we are going to take together as a club," Noble told the club's website."

Now before there are recriminations either way about this, it must be understood that we should not believe everything we read in the media. Still, it would have been helpful if the bolded part had been made public last week when the supposed meeting took place. The focus could then have been on a different story to one about the club being in the verge of doing a deal with Brisbane to get Rockliff.

One thing that should also be evident to all is the AFL clubs don't necessarily focus on getting talented players without delving into other matters such as character, whether they bring stability to the club's list and how much they will cost you in dollar terms. Rockliff can get his 40 possessions in a game (and there are question marks over whether enough of them are effective) but it's clear that he was shopped around to other clubs that didn't take the bait. There had to be a reason for this and some posters around here recognised this sooner than others.

Wrong. Brisbane won't get the compo like we got for Frawley because that system has changed .

So what number are we giving him? :)

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
