I never understand why people post stuff like that.

Good pick up and great to have another player who can kick the ball.

That might not be the only thing you don't understand

So true.

I never understood why my parents had me.

Okay, so we're officially a destination club now (lulz at that entire exchange).

Hiibberd and Salem in 2017 :) I'm excited. Not quite at Big Kev level but in that vicinity.

For the record, the actual argument was that we were 3rd in line behind Hawthorn and Geelong as far as being a "destination club" goes.

Essendrug supporters are disappointed they are losing him.

We are picking up a very handy footballer who will walk into our starting 18 on the back flank.

Surely pick 26 is more than enough to get this over the line? given his age, he's had a year out of the AFL system and all the other factors around this that's more than fair

Neither did they.

Sorry, it was there.

I thought i read somewhere that we are going offer next years 2nd round draft in an attempt to keep this years pick and use it in the draft.

I leave the misinterpretation and hyperbole to you Ginger. It what you do so well.

Hibberd has declared he want to come to Melbourne. That makes us a destination club for some players.

I agree. We are a destination club for Essendon 26 year old half back flankers. Probably the main one, since we have got two in successive years.

Destination club for some players. Pitty that there all average ones. Hibberd, Melksham, Bugg, Kennedy, Garlett. Not saying that there bad players but it's obvious to all that there not in the top bracket mould.

Not what we need we have halfback flankers to burn

Outside mid backup ruck /Forward thats what we need Why buy two halfbacks?

Probably because we could get them. Actually they add some experience, hardness and better delivery to the forward line, ( hear that Jesse ) than some of the players we have.

Also, it probably allows us to move players like Hunt and Salem to the wings.

But were not the ugly girl in the corner any more, at least were up on the dance floor.

Sometimes the ugliest girls are the hottest dancers! And then there is the After match!!

I think Uncle Bitter would agree with this!!

Are people blowing their load over Hibberd because they think he fills some desperate need we have, or because someone (albeit a middling player from a crap team) actually chose to come us (read: nobody else wanted him)?

The last thing we need is another half back flanker, particularly one who hasn't played a game for 18 months.

Offer Essendon a third round pick and move on if they won't deal. They need to free up salary space and we clearly paid overs for Melksham last year.

Landing a 27yo that Essendon didn't even particularly try to retain is hardly a coup. Hope we get a later round pick upgrade if we trade away our only valuable pick for him.

The beauty of recruiting someone like Hibberd is the knock on effect - you can take the short, simplistic view that we've just gained another 'half back flanker'.  We know that Hibberd is a very good half back flanker, for a start, and it gives us more options.  With his recruitment, it can allow other guys like Hunt and Salem to play further up the field and use their weapons (kicking and speed respectively) where it can be more damaging than before.

Hibberd is terrific one on one, is a very good kick and is cool under pressure.  Not to mention he brings further experience to our backline, something we are still short of.

But feel free to be underwhelmed.  Some supporters are never happy.

An element to consider about  the supposed " not trying to retain " is the special circumstance EFC find themselves in. If any player really wanted to leave....they ( the player have a distinct upper hand , clasping a mighty big sword )

Now teh ruling has been delivered Essendon are in no position to argue with anyone really. Hence Dodoro even being almost amenable

Apart from those circumstances, they wouldn't offer him an acceptable length deal, something well within their control. They were more than happy to give longer term contracts to players like Hurley who they were desperate to retain, Hibberd was clearly not a priority, and I'm not sure why we've made it one given the number of HBFers we already have, even though he may be a minor upgrade on some of them.

I don't buy the they didn't really try and retain him stuff, they definitely wanted to keep him but they had to pay massive overs for Hurley and Hooker to keep them (both are on Hogan level money ) and someone was always likely to be squeezed out, our offer to Hibberd made that an easy choice for them

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
