How do we get Prestia AND Hibberd to the club?

Of course you doubt it.  If the trade went through and he was running out for us in Round 1 you would still find some way to doubt it.

We will get one of these guys, but I doubt we get both unless we pull off some sort of miracle.  Another good mid in Prestia wouldn't hurt, but do the club believe in the younger players to take that next step?

I'm more confident on Hibberd than Prestia.  There is also the albatross that is Tom McDonald - if he decides to leave it would free up some cap room to potentially sign a free agent or swing a deal or two.  Big off season ahead.

To be fair, I think he got confused and was thinking Hurley instead of Hibberd.

I like how everyone said last year we paid overs for Melksham and this year the bombers are using that trade as a basis to suggest that Hibberd is worth more. If anything i would be thinking that essendon owe us for being so generous and that its their turn to accept unders (to even out last years deal).

i doubt we'll get either.

We've apparently said that we can't afford Prestia's asking price, while Adelaide and the Dogs are leading the race for Hurley. I personally think Hurley will end up staying at Essendon.

What is his rumoured asking price?

I like how on social media Essendon supporters are saying "he's slow and a bad kick, we'll replace him easily...... we should get a first round pick for him"...

If Tom McDonald is lured to Sydney then what would we expect in return for his departure. I am unsure of the status of the Sydney academy this year and how many brownie points they need to retain their academy players which may limit their desire to give up any draft picks. If they finish 1 or 2 then their first pick will be nearly the same as MFC's 2nd round pick. If Hibberd is a 2nd rounder then Tom would have to be worth a first round. Roos has always been fair in trading and IMO with the footy dept good at assessing a players worth when trading in, who on our list who we would be willing to trade would have decent currency? Then we can work out who we could target.

If we're set on the Hibberd deal we could trade next years 1st (which should be in double figures) for Essendon's 2nd this year which will be 19.  I believe they did Carlisle to the Saints for similar structure deal.

Sounds as though Tom Mitchell is going to Hawthorn so if T'mac went to the Swans i'd want their first round pick & a fringe player so 15ish and maybe Brandon Jack or someone like that looking for a bit more AFL opportunity.

Pick 15 and 2017 second round pick might get the job done for Prestia

and our 2016 second rounder and maybe an exchange of later picks should get the deal done for Hibberd.

If we miss out on Hurley we may have to look at someone like Nathan Brown ( Pies ) to fill the void until Oscar and Frost develop a little in their positions.

So Sydney are supposed to be into Tommy Mac, O'meara and now Mason Wood...they only have cap space and trade value for one of these.

I doubt Tom is heading to Sydney.

The other thing is i find it highly unlikely that what they'd be able to offer is any more than what we'd be willing to pay, and we're clearly on the rise so it's not like he's leaving Brisbane to play in some wins, he'll get the finals action either way, just with us it's near his family and in the same team as his brother.

no way could swans pay big money for another player after the franklin and tippett deals. that would be robbing their other big stars many of whom must be on below par contracts. it also hasn't been the swans way of operating over the years (franklin tippett being exceptions, but there is a limit on how many exceptions are sustainable) and they no longer have the cola. i think we too easily get sucked in by all the media rumours of huge contract offers/demands.

'stuie', unless Tom Mitchell can play KPD then that's a poor trade. Only worth anything to us if it's part of a bigger trade to land Hurley, Talia or the like.

Mitchell's a gun player, we can get a KPD from elsewhere, we don't have to trade like for like.

He is mate but not sure we have the currency to do it. We've got an inexperienced defence and if we lose Tommy we must replace him with like for like or better from somewhere. My opinion only but defence is our big weakness at the moment.

My bad I misread the title and thought it was about Hurley not Hibberd.

All signs are leading towards Hibberd but we won't get Prestia due to his price.

I agree about our defence, but if TMac nominates Sydney we need to facilitate a trade, Mitchell would be what I would want rather than a draft pick. We can then hunt a KPD from another club.

Pick 27, 45 & Dawes to Essendon for Hibberd & Pick 55.  More then fair enough, probably overs but is more then reasonable in just getting it done.

2017 1st Round Pick + Wagner for Prestia.

Given we'd then have Hibberd, Melksham, Hunt, Lumumba (if he recovers) and White to promote off the rookie list, we could probably afford to trade Wagner back to his home state as we'd suddenly look very strong off half back.

I love that so many take speculation as the 'truth'.

At this time of year there are countless 'reported' offers and interests from player x to club y.

Who knows whether Hawthorn are genuinely interested in Tom Mitchell or that Richmond are the 'front-runners' to land Prestia. Nobody. It's funny that posters take it as truth. 'Looks like Richmond will land Prestia'. etc.

The only one that has the most meat to it is the Hibberd one because of what both clubs have stated themselves as well as insiders like Tim Watson expressing that the club believe he is a 50/50 chance of staying. But still, who the fark knows what'll happen.

As a supporter of the club however, I'll say this: There is absolutely a need and requirement for a player of Hibberd's quality playing in our backline and posters are kidding themselves lumping him in with the current group of players who play through the backline atm. Chalk and cheese. Hibberd would be a very handy pickup and I hope that he decides to come to us.

The other hunch that I have is that our club, (and other clubs) will be eagerly awaiting to see how O'meara finishes off the year and what sort of form he produces if he gets back in the side. If he can have a clear run at it from here on in (and providing the club believes his knee injury is something he can legitimately get over), I hope we'd have a crack at bringing him to the club. Of course this is providing his knee is not made of putty and the club genuinely believe it won't hinder him going forward.

O'meara is the kind of star midfielder we need. He possesses the kind of game that nobody on list does.

Hibberd, O'Meara and a KPB like Brown or Mackenzie.

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
