More like the 'out the back' game than the 'out back' game

Hard to watch. Our better players went missing which exposed the rest of the team.

Good to see Hunt continue his form and Jetta back. Not many positives.

For those of you who kept up to date with the game on here, or haven't seen it, then don't listen to those who suggest playing a Dunn or Frost or Pedersen down back, or up forward, would have made a difference.  They're wrong.

We were outplayed today by a side that exploited our defence superbly.  Our small forwards and midfielders didn't do enough around the contests and this allowed Port to get first hands on the ball, release the ball to a runner, and they were away.  It didn't matter who we played down back because they weren't given the opportunity to properly make a contest.  What Port did well was get the ball to half back, bring it to ground and then run.  They did it all day and we didn't do enough to stop it.  Our defence is based on pressure and the press up the ground, and when we don't do it we look silly.  Guys like Dixon and Wingard had acres of space all day.  Dunn wouldn't have changed that.

Our younger players like Kennedy, Kent, Harmes, Wagner and Petracca had minimal impact on the contest.  Tyson was poor as well while others like Viney weren't able to exert the same influence on the contest.

The other one is Hogan - he is such a fantastic player, but missing some key shots really hurt us.  The big miss in the last quarter was the nail in the coffin.  I think he'll learn from it and look to improve.

Overall a very disappointing performance.  We had a few winners like Gawn and Jones, but we just didn't work hard enough around the ground.

On to next week and an opportunity to respond against the Hawks.

This Diamond Defence is going to kill us going into the back half of the season.  Doesn't work against teams that just ignore it and spread and run around or over it .  Hogan yet again misses  crucial pressure shot  from easy range.

Our recent form combined with a poor team selection and injury to Oliver meant it was always going to be a tough ask.

Port are a good team and we still have a long way to go.

Did any one see any changes to our structure? Did at any point we look to play anything different to our zone?

I didn't, but I'd like to ask as I find that baffling.

You can bet your arse that if Port have worked out how to exploit our zone, then Hawthorn won't have too many dramas.

And that Hogan miss, when we had all the momentum, just killed us.

Lost it at the selection table. Lost it again with our goal kicking. Lost it a third time by our refusal to do anything to counteract the easy transition goals.

A frustrating day though the signs were there last week.

Our issue with early on in our goal kicking. If we were 7.2 (what we should have been), instead of 2.7, we would have rolled them. They would have been down and out and we would have been able to ski downhill. We had a bad day in front of the sticks and that hasnt happened this year so far. We are not good enough not to take our shots. 

I know that OMac was in our bottom 10 today (Kennedy, Newton, Garland, ANB, Tyson, Harmes, Garlett, Kent) but I don't see what we are loosing playing him at the moment. He leaves his opponent well and impacts the contest. He is not good one on one yet because he still needs to develop but he has a future unlike Garland. 

Hunt continues to do the right things and impact contests. Gawn did a lot around the ground which was the issue in the last few weeks. Hogan had a great game and wont kick that badly for the rest of the year. Watts is getting better and better. We have a long way to go and we should be winning these games (and St Kilda and Essendon). But we are at least developing. 

Dean Kent finished up with 14 possessions. 8 of them were clangers.

Ben Kennedy 7 possessions.

Really disappointed today. We looked slow and even disinterested at times.

something has to be done about the backline setup, good teams will absolutely carve us up!

Very few positives, although we may see Trengove play next weekend as I expect several changes due to form and fatigue

And this is what hurt us the most.  They didn't do enough offensively and they didn't do enough defensively either.  Garlett can be put in with that group today as well.

When that happens then our gameplan falls apart.  Roos is big on the fact that we need everyone to play their role, and when they don't we see what happens.  Too many passengers today.

 

Perspective people .. Port have 47 ave more games than us & ups & downs are expected?

What annoys me the most is playing our home game away!

Understand Indegenious round etc but is this a game we sold?

Defence was rubbish today with both Garland and OMac less than poor. Both need to go for next week. Bring in Dunn and Frost. In the back half the only one that looked competent was Jetta. Bugg either tightens up on his man or play for Casey.

Midfield was a shadow of what it has been in games this season. A hell of a lot of passengers standing around letting others do it. Where was Kennedy? Tyson? Newton? ANB? Petracca? Harmes? All went missing and were hardly sighted. Viney completely covered in the first term. Jones tried to play a lone hand. Vince popped up a few times....too few... Stretch was there a outs but as an outside player you need others to get the,ball and there was no one there doing that. Delivery into the forward 50 from our midfield was dreadful.

Th forwards kicked badly but got bad delivery and not often enough. Kent might enjoy a run with Casey.

I'd somebody to ask Roos what is our plan B?

if we are getting beaten in contested ball and beaten easily in transition,why do we persist with this diamond defence?

When we do the game just gets beyond us and it's too late.

Couldnt we switch to a man on man defence for certain periods when we are being dominated like that?

Fast opposition transition still killing us. When a team has good run and spread on the outside we tend to struggle. Happened against Ess, St K, WB and now Port. We were 2nd to the contest way too many times and Port's ability to hit a target to advantage was immense. Their pressure in the middle was well planned and the use of Trengove and Westoff to isolate Gawn and create a second avenue was a big factor, despite Max having a big 2nd half. Tactically they beat us by qtr time before we knew what had happened.

What would you have them do when the ball is coming in without any pressure at all?  Nothing that happened today was their fault.  Many of Port's goals came from easy kicks over the back of the press, not one on one contests or from giving away a free kick.

There is no way port are a 7 better goal team than us. Its the same stuff as it awlys is when we lose. Don't man up hard enough, the opp players get the ball to easily, to many easy goals in there 50 today they just had loose players there all the time to get the ball over the back. At times we couldn't even hit a player 30 metres out on the chest, poor handballing and missing easy shots at goal. 

I know it's still a ground with goal posts but geez I now believe we have to ditch this NT deal. We cannot win over there. Its costs us 8 points a season with the darwin one as well and todays crowd was  5146. We would have got close to 30,00 today. 

And im also sick of our club bringing players back into form. A few people mentioned Dixon would star today and he did. Again all year he hasnt done much but fires today. 

The next 3 weeks we play hawthorn, collingwood and sydney. Geez we could suddenly fall down that ladder. 

I hope we play better against the Hawks next week.

It seemed like a ground didn't suit our game plan, when we had the ball we couldn't find space when they had the ball they had free players everywhere. 

I'm hoping this is just faze 3 of our game plan as wr seem to be playing super attaching and no much defending.

This club, the players, supporters and media need to realise we are not top 8 material YET, any talk of it is just plain dumb.  We have a dearth of young talent still developing.  At best we are 10th - 14th, any other talk is rubbish.

my grizzle is aimed at senior players who do not lead when it is needed, it is an old chestnut but it is an accurate one.  

If anyone can tell me what the hell (apart from money) this club has gained by selling home games over the past10 years, I am happy to listen.  Screw selling home games, it should stop forthwith as soon as last contract ends.  The quality of all these games is poor and frankly worse than watching VFL.  I cannot see what benefit it is to developing players to be dragged to Alice Springs each year to get beaten.  It is a gift to Port Adelaide, and it was always a gift to Brisbane in the past. I'm over it!!!
