POST MATCH DISCUSSION - Round 9

Loved Stretch and Oliver's games.

Bugg was good.

O Mac way out of his depth, needs a year in the VFL and the gym. He and his brother have depth perception issues.

Gawn should've had 4 frees in the ruck, got 1. Not doing much damage around the ground lately.

We played too much Hollywood [censored] early. Should've put 10 solid goals on them then pulled out the party tricks.

Goid game to kick inaccurately, lets hope we kick straight next week because we should beat Port.

Can someone objectively give a run down of the first half (I will watch a replay later)? I missed it, got a few score updates in the second quarter and saw we were running away with it, but the mood on Demonland seemed down (and apparently pointing it out "wears thin".

To me, we held them at arms length.  We looked good in patches, moved the ball well and kicked 10 goals.  On the flip side you could argue that our backline is still a work in progress, and when we turned it over they were able to get some easy goals out the back.  We could have been 7 goals up at half time but we allowed Tom Bell, of all people, to kick 2 in a minute.

Nowhere near as bad as some spoke about here, though.  We never really looked in any trouble, we just allowed ourselves to get dragged down to their level a bit.

That score review was a total joke and as inconclusive as it gets. Total waste of time except to hurt us for no reason.

My bad. Thanks for correcting.

A lot of players were well down on their best but we still won comfortably which is good.

Stretch has managed to secure a spot in our best 22 which is brilliant, hopefully we will see the same with ANB and Newton if they get an extended run.

However, ANB and Newton both came in for players who you would think will slot straight back in next week which is disappointing for them but great for our depth.

Good to see some of the younger players being the better mids.  Watts was immense today.

Bugg has some of the most woeful disposals then laces one out 40 meters to Harmes.

Gawn was quiet a again.

Got to win those sorry of games.Good to see us win it by 10 goals.

I ate victory donughts so thats always good.

Those are the kind of games you just simply win and move on.

Stretch is a running machine! Garlands best game in a long time, positive game from Petracca, Wagner was good.

Watts has every right to feel dirty today..

I also liked Newton and ANB game.

Omac has to go back to the VFL and stay there. So weak at the contest!

Skipper flew the flag and went in hard and got us going.

With all the talk going around about how we have a number of players suffering from "illness" the result was pleasing...

Definitely not the greatest game but a win is a win and it keeps us with a very healthy %

Important to knock Port off next weekend and then look to keep building momentum into a tough MCG stretch after that against Hawthorn and a rejuvenated Colling%^&#

O-Mac will struggle against Dixon and Westhoff

Be as negative as you want but that was a good win.

I only saw the second half but we looked shocking at times and their kicking let us off. However you can never complain about a 10 goal win. Should've been 100+ but you bank the points and look to next week. Turn up with that attitude though and Port will do us.

People may just laugh and scroll on, but THIS is one of the most accurate assessments I have ever seen!

Kudos to the Bizkit

Got the job done.

I thought a few blokes looked at their most comfortable today - Garland, Michie, Stretch and Petracca. Good for them to be involved. Not much point in Jones and Vince getting 40 each. Was happy that the younger or down in confidence players could build into it.

i agree we looked a bit Hollywood at times but we will learn and continue to get better.

On a side note I reckon Leppa out coached himself today. They swung the axe when if they had a more experienced team in they could have settled better and got more reward for effort. There is something to be said for stability, even in the face of pressure.

I'll take a ho hum 10 goal victory over us being the team who loses by 10 goals! Nothing ho hum about a 10 goal win! Man we are harsh supporters! We win by 10 goals, score over 100 points again, have a spread of goal kickers and a young midfield!! I will take this any day of the week!

Yep- watching the game there were things to tear your hair out

But looking at the scoreboard and stats sheet and there's not much more you could ask for .

Watts, Jesse and Stretch all very impressive. Oliver's clearances early were important. Petracca is going to be a gun, but still a lot to learn. Garland was ordinary in the first half, but I'd venture as far as saying he had a very good second half. Despite some poor decisions and disposals, Omac's one-on-one work was good too.

Couldn't believe it I got inside switched on the TV and saw Petracca kick a goal. Went to the toilet came back to see Lions lining up for "their 4th in a row" according to the commentators.  Had to rewind it to see what the hell happened

I felt like I was transported back to 2013 watching today.
But it wasn't us reproducing our own 2013 form. It was Brisbane producing Melbourne's 2013 form.
I seriously can't see where the hope is going to come from there. They were horribly inept.
The Suns at least have a truck load of injuries. A lot of the Lions blokes are recycled from other clubs (Bell, Robinson, Christensen, Bastinac), senior players who aren't cutting the mustard (Rich, Merrett, Zorko, Hanley) or kids who might be good in the future but not yet (Schache, McStay, Freeman).
On our end, I think at times they dragged us down to their level. However, good teams put the stragglers away and I believe we did that today. Lucky they didn't kick another goal as that would have reduced it to a 57 point margin and the season would have been a write off for WYL.
Good effort boys.  Next weekend against Port is the big test. Can't see us beating the Dawks (yet) and we would like to go in mid year on the positive side of the ledger.

Billy stretch, huge game 31 disposals at 90.8 disposal efficiency, highest in the team on both fronts.

If we take anything out of today's game, it is this!

Confidence is a beautiful thing...

Feeling more and more at home each week and really impacting the game at the moment

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
