I think "totally overlooking" is the furphy to be honest. I dont think anyone here is overlooking it at all.   The situation is horrid. . I cant imagine anyone wouldn't have empathy for the lads situation..  Having said that , something has to be done whether it's counseling or whatever. Whilst Jesse's family situation is unfortunate to the extreme the Club has a duty to itself  ( and that includes the playing list going forward )  to do the very best for itself also. How one marries the first with the latter is the province of extreme candour mixed with understanding whilst acknowledging an outcome must come one way or another.

What IS the club actually doing ? I suspect more than just giving space.

Forget about Jesse Hogan. He is a forward who cannot be relied upon to kick the winning goal in a Grand Final, let alone any game for that matter.

I thought his second year was very disappointing, and if he does not know what he wants to do by now, then trade him.

Let's get on the front foot for a change and say, "If you cannot commit to us long-term now, then we will trade you".

Simon Goodwin has said publicly that his management have said they will work out a deal at the end of the season, and the end of the season is now.

So he has got a couple of weeks at best to re-sign for at least 3 years, otherwise he is pro-actively putting himself up for trade.

Trade him for Nat Fyfe (West Coast have nothing that is worth Jesse Hogan).

This is our big chance to sign up an A-Grade midfielder who is still in his prime (subject to broken leg repair).

The best legacy that Jesse Hogan can leave our Club with is Nat Fyfe.

Nat Fyfe in demons colours sounds nice. I'm optimistic that Weideman will get stronger next year and Watts will kick even a bigger bag of goals. As much as I love Hogan, it's not going to be the end of the world to lose him.

even more reason to show some sensitivity towards the situation.

The club should not even entertain telling Jesse that he needs to commit or be traded at this point in time. Reading between the lines and hearing his manager say that he believes he will play at the dees in 2017 aligns with this thinking too.

People deal with loss and grief differently. He may decide that he needs to head home to be around his family. But similarly, he may feel that his old man would have wanted him to continue with the dees, so soldier on.

If you don't want to play with the club that you are with, or you are uncertain about it, then you are pro-actively putting yourself up for a trade, which is exactly what Jesse Hogan is doing right now.

Mid-fielders win games these days, not key forwards. Trade him for Nat Fyfe while we have got the opportunity.

There has been plenty of confirmation.  Just because Jesse or the club hasn't spoken about it, which they shouldn't be doing in the public forum, doesn't mean it's not true.  And I'd love you to prove that Goodwin went to his management and told them to get on with the job of re-signing him.

Where has there been the confirmation? Only on Demonland?

I saw an interview on the Melbourne website at the announcement of Simon Goodwin as the Senior Coach just last week, where he specifically stated that Jesse Hogan's management said they would put off contract talks until the end of the 2016 season, and he said that that time has now arrived. It is up to you to loo that up and inform yourself if you do not believe me.

But it does not matter - my point is - sign up or you are proactively putting yourself up for a trade. And I would take Nat Fyfe for Jesse Hogan any day.

I think it is possible to be too touchy-feely. We treated Mitch Clark with kid gloves, and it was right at the time, only to be kicked in the nuts by him as he waltzed off to a completely different environment for his health another AFL club.

At the end of the day, these guys are professionals (highly paid, etc), and if it's too much for them, they are free to change professions and become a photographer or whatever floats their boat.

Remember Steve Harmison, the England fast bowler who terrorized us in the 2007 Ashes? Then he came out to Oz and could barely put it on the deck. Due to personal issues going on at the same time. Basically he didn't want to be there.

What use is it putting him, or anyone, on the park if he doesn't want to be there? Doesn't do him or the team any good.

Having said that, all the signs are that Hogan doesn't want to play with us. We've got a Scully/Frawley situation staring us in the face and we can't see for the looking. Trade him now while we can get something back.

My Dad just lost his wife to Cancer it was a slow and evil process. I am glad she has now passed.  The hell is over

The issue is that Jesse Hogan cannot decide if he wants to play for us long term or not - and this has been going on since last year. If his father is gravely ill (and I do not share your acceptance of such on the post you have mentioned) then that is yet another reason for him to go back to WA.

My point remains, we cannot continue to remain suppliant to players who do not, deep-down, want to play for us. So let's get it over and done with and trade him.

We are a very soft club, and it has done us no good for over 50 years - time to draw a line in the sand.

Yes - losing someone close is very painful - we have all experienced it.

But my point remains - Jesse Hogan has never publicly expressed that he wants to play for the Melbourne Footy Club long term, irrespective of whether his father is gravely ill or not. If his father is gravely ill, then that actually increases the possibility of Jesse wanting to go back home. So let's just accept that, and get on with a trade.

We are still a very weak club, if we are still displaying that we do not know how to deal with these issues.

The problem is SWYL, the signs are we won't be rewarded for being compassionate.

I too lost a family member recently to cancer. If his ties to family are strong, let him be with them.

It makes no sense that he'd wish to remain in Melbourne next year to play with us when his emotions would at there highest levels, yet wouldn't commit past next year when his emotions would subside some what.

There are other things in play if you ask me.

What on earth does that mean? I notice that 2 of your favorite players are former co-captains appointed by Mark Neeld at far too young an age - and both now playing in the VFL.

What I am talking about is getting fair dinkum with players who have shown no indication of wanting to be a Demon for life. Unfortunately Jesse Hogan is such a player, and if his father is gravely ill, then that makes it even more unlikely that he will want to return home.

So let's grab the bull by the horns, find out how fair dinkum Fremantle are about wanting him, and trade him for Nat Fyfe.

Sure Mo. But if his dad passes it may be better for Jesse to be at The MFC. Once the situation changes. 

I am sure there are many things at play. I had no idea that Jesse may lose his dad within weeks till this afternoon. That changes everything if true.
