He would have taken more marks if Maxy had not dropped in front of him 2 or 3 times as well.

That one that Maxy took in front of the big pack, would have been a huge mark if Hogan had ended up with it. Was still big, and we ended up with the best result possible.

ANB probably did as well, but it wasnt from seeing the warm up, I was in the bar at that stage. I heard from someone in the know he was completing the full warm up sunday night.

Seems like a slightly strange thing to do, especially the day after he's played. Can you grill your buddy to see if they know any more about it?

He def did the warm up, 100%.

You don't always have to let them in the door, though.

If the seniors are playing well then I'd be telling those guys at Casey to keep playing well so when the opportunity arises they are in the frame for selection.  It's not a great message to send to the players that, even if you're playing well, you'll be dropped because someone hit a bit of form at Casey.

All those you mentioned above are in the frame but would be lucky to get a gig at the moment, and that's a great place for us to be in.

The only player in a bit of danger is Brayshaw.  Outside of that we should stick with the same side.

Someone should certainly be dropped if they don't fit in to the intended match ups. It is about putting the best team on the park to beat the other team. It depends on their strengths and weaknesses.

My only concern about tracca is his tank. I saw Casey on Saturday night, and he was a long way from the best afield (that was Tenners by some distance in a very ordinary display by Casey). I suspect though he is a big occasion player given his underage record, but he did not have a complete pre season, and that is why the selectors are holding him back IMHO.

Nevertheless, I suspect he will play in the seniors this week.

We will go smaller and quicker this week, those calling for names like Hunt, Harmes and Kennedy to come out, and even Frost given his speed, have got rocks in their head. Fair chance we will drop a tall, especially if you look at the different lineups we tried at Etihad last year and which ones had some success. ANB a definite chance to come in, Oliver a lock, it's probably close to time for Trac but geez I'm nervous about his first game being on that rubbish surface.

You keep going on about the surface as if it's a huge risk to a player who suffered an injury that happened well over a year ago.

His knee and supporting muscles, tendons and ligaments surrounding it would be far stronger than they've ever been and considering he hasn't had one soft tissue set-back on his road to recovery, (something which is common amongst athletes who suffer serious knee injuries) he couldn't be in a better position in terms of preparedness.

There's no evidence either way that the surface at eitihad poses more of a risk to players coming back from a knee injury. It was a completely innocuous scenario at training and many knee injuries occur under similar circumstance.

It's time for him to be unleashed.

Stop mozzing the guy.

I want him to play, I think he will play, I'm just nervous.

There has been a lot of talk about that hard surface and it's possible influence on injuries by players, coaches and commentators, so I wouldn't think there was nothing in it. I'm not saying he will do the knee again, more thinking of the impact on it if he's running on a quick hard ground.

Have a read of this....

All posters have to do is read the last 2 to 3 weeks on who should be in or who should be out to realise that we no longer have a best 22 but are sitting on about a best 25 or 26, something we have not been able to say for a long time.

Whoever misses out is going to be unlucky and we won't promote just because someone is playing well at Casey. We will promote and demote because it will make the Melbourne team better. Those knocking the door down at Casey will have to keep knocking until there is an obvious place for them in the team.

Interesting to note alot (including myself) all want Petracca to come in for Brayshaw yet it was Trengove who had 30 disposals 10 tackles and 2 goals. Surely Trenners would be ahead of Tracca in terms of form?

Brayshaw for Oliver. Petracca for Pedersen. Another tough one this week.

How could you justify dropping Pedersen before Frost?

Pedersen has been by far the more consistent player this year.  Supercoach is a pretty effective measure of output:

Pedersen avg 71 (ranked 13th for team) vs  Frost avg 41 (ranked last for team) ... That's a pretty big difference after both have played 4 senior games.

I'm sure Frost has some upside but surely based on importance to the team so far in 2016, Pedersen gets the nod.  He's also one of the very few contested marking players we've got.

So, if we look at it purely on form, Brayshaw will make way.

They won't want to upset the winning balance, so it will be someone who can play the HFF/Mid rotation like gus has been playing.

Ins: Trac

Out: Gus

------------------------------------------------

FB: Jetta - Dunn - H

HB: Salem - McD - Wags

C: Vince - N.Jones - Harmes

HF: Kent - Hogan - Kennedy

FF: Garlett - Pedo - Watts

R: Gawn - Tyson - Viney

I: Trac - Frost - Hunt - Bugg

E: ANB - Trenners - Oliver

-----------------------------------------------

Match-ups:

T-MAC - Nick

Dunn - Bruce

Wags - McCartin

I understand what you're saying, I just don't think it's worth worrying about such things.

Injury occurs from things like fatigue, completely random/innocuous and unlucky situations, an imbalance in the physiology of an individual etc.

There are risks involved in all of them. And in all of life.

You may as well be closing your eyes and crossing your fingers every time he dons the Casey jumper, trains, is in the weights room, fornicates etc.

He'll be fine Stu.

Play on.

I pretty much do...... ;)

Just hard to accept good things can happen sometimes when you're a Dees supporter!

I wouldn't think he'd debut at Metricon, and surely wouldn't have to wait another two weeks, so looks like we all get our wish this week anyways.

I agree with this, partly.

I think M Jones will come back in. His two way running is an important piece in our puzzle, particularly against the saints as they have a similar game plan and the ball will be pinging from end to end all game, putting a premium on  players who can gut run to defend against the ball that gets over our high press (by the by Hunt's speed has been very important in this regard as has Frost's fitness).

Not sure who gets cut for Jones though.

GWS split St.Kilda open with great ball movement, and their midfield outran St.Kilda. We should do similar. I see St.Kilda's injuries might see an important change or two. Montagna (hamstring) and Riewoldt has some form of foot complaint - unsure how serious.

I think Petracca would have to come in. A half forward-mid role, I could see him replacing Frost who seems ok defensively, but his conversion for goal lets him down. ANd he basically doesn't get enough of it. Christian would be a more dangerous option for the opposition. Plus it would give us more diversity - meaning a thumping headache for opposition tacticians.

The other option is the return of Oliver. He's important for us at clearances. We can't ignore that. I thought he should have been in for Richmond; so he comes in. "The out" for him I'm unsure. Many have said Brayshaw, who I thought was notably better than he was first time around v Essendon. I would say either one of Kennedy or Brayshaw.

I think Hunt is required, he offers a lot for us and I can only see further improvement with him. He's smart with the footy too. Wagner will also be required IMO, much the same with improvement and confidence.

What Brayshaw offers us though is poise when he has possession. They both offer good defensive pressure, Kennedy more speed, and spreads well. Either of the them would be stiff.

I'll say Kennedy out. And I don't like saying that at all.

Trengove is getting closer and closer, don't be surprised if he's called up after a 4 quarter performance v Willy. Grimes is another who handled himself well.

There is rumour Salem might not get up, - not 100%. If this is the case perhaps Grimes or Trengove to come back.

What I will say, and I mean no disrespect to McDonald, this is constructive criticism. Buddy, clean up your kicking and decision making. Honestly.....brilliant reader of play and great overhead mark contested. But just let's himself, his teammates and club down with some poor decisions through either lack of vision or lack of understanding on the risk followed by poor disposal. More often than not he gets it right, but when he gets it wrong, it crucifies us.

It's great that this thread has almost become redundant and now those calling for a change almost look ridiculously vindictive.

It just shows that we finally have a squad of 26-30, who all legitimately bring something to the table, and they are probably more reasons now for them  to play than not play, but unfortunately only 22 get a gig and the incumbents generally hold sway when sides are winning.

But whilst it wouldn't surprise me to see the big NO CHANGE sticker out for Saturday, I reckon there may be just one change.

There are three midfield/forwards who have arguably the strongest claims on getting a gig.

1) Oliver - He was rested last week after a slightly less dominant clearance game against the Pies. The problem with resting is that the one aspect of Oliver's game that needs a little work on - his run and carry - isn't really tested by watching from the stands, although I imagine he will have picked up a few tips on what's required as he watched with the coaching staff.

2) Neal-Bullen - After three huge VFL games he was given the dreaded 23rd man role (not sure why Oliver couldn't have performed this role and still rested). Anyway the 23rd is like the death card because you can't improve your chance by the VFL and as a result seem to fall back in the queue - just ask Grimes (23rd v North), Stretch (23rd v Pies).

3) Petracca - Roosy was at the Pies game when he showed he was way too good for VFL in the first quarter and unfortunately he has had to do a longer apprenticeship than he'd like. Remember poor Tom Mitchell for the Swans - he had about four weeks of 40-plus disposal games in the NEAFL and was the subject of trade bait before finally getting a gig in the seniors and I don't think he's missed a game since. It didn't really hurt his development after all.

Quite clearly it will be hard for any one of these three to get a game at the expense of others this week and as a result my feeling is that only one at most will play. I'm tipping CP5 but it could just as easily be ANB or Clarry.

And then it gets really hard to figure who comes out. I don't even want to go there, because it's way too spiteful and whoever you throw up has very strong claims for remaining.

That's just incorrect. Salem came up for treatment / assessment, warmed up along the boundary (in front of where I was sitting) and went back on. Was still on when the final siren sounded.

FWIW one of the radio stations said he'd gone off with what appeared to be a hamstring injury.

Can't have been much in it if he played the game out

Not too sure if Brayshaw is injured however if he isn't then keep in in the side. Let him get match fitness by playing.

Only change might be Hunt or harmes out for petracca. Otherwise keep side as is...

Agree on Brayshaw, just such a competitive and smart footballer that does the little things so well. For mine i would keep the side together unless there in injury, soreness or forced absence.

Maybe even this week, though probably not.

There is only a 5 day break between the matches, so I think we could end up seeing a few changes depending on how the players recover.

Because Frost can apply pressure in our high forward press and then has the legspeed to get out the back as he showed a couple of times on Sunday night.

I like Pedersen. For me he's a better option than Dawes in this team, but he doesn't have the legspeed for the game we're playing. I don't find that Supercoach is effective at all in measuring a player's worth, but each to their own. Given our depth, I'd be swapping Petracca for Pedersen, who will play just as tall as Pedersen, but will get it done when the ball hits the ground.

Possible Ins: Oliver, M Jones, Petracca, ANB, Tren

Possible Outs: Frost, BenKen, Hunt, Brayshaw, Harmes

Can't see us making more than 3 changes.

I missed seeing Oliver do his thing, very keen of course to see Petracca and have been very impressed with M. Jones this year, so I'd like to see them all in at the expense of Frost, Brayshaw and one of BenKen or Hunt.

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
