I may have missed this before but in an article today I read the Andy Moir was Jayden's uncle.

Does anyone remember the no 29 from late 70's early 80's ( he ended up at North).

He was a live wire half forward who could take breath taking hangers  - but was highly inconsistent ( sound familiar?)

For five minutes he was going to be the next big thing  - alas - it didn't happen ( also sound familiar ?)

I do have fond memories of him and what could have been (god, that sounds familiar)

I remember watching Andy Moir. I thought we had a real good one but, as mentioned, he was a highlight reel and very inconsistent. I also remember a story about how he collapsed from heat exhaustion during one pre-season.

Did anyone else hear Hamish say on the weekend that the Pies were actually going to/ or told Hunt they would take him in the pick 60s only for Melbourne to pick him up earlier.

Found that interesting.

Andy was recruited from down my way (Mentone Grammar) back in the days of recruiting zones. He played mostly as a HF flanker for the Dees, and my references show that he played 73 games from 1977 to 1981, and kicked 68 goals.  Not a particularly distinguished career in another dismal era for the Dees.  I have strong hope that his nephew will earn the family bragging rights over his career.

Nice find. I also found Hamish's comments about the Pies taking him very interesting, considering he was such a bolter. I remember people saying at the time that we should have just rookied him, but I guess that would answer why we picked him in the 50's.

My alma mater, I vaguely remember him, could play school footy.

Yep, remember him well. Thought he was going to be our Trevor Barker. Pretty sure I had his footy card. Why didn't I hang on to those bl**dy things?

One of my favorite players. IIRC kicked 5 goals in a game early in his career and we all thought we had our next gun. Terrific mark. Never quite fulfilled his potential.

M_9 mentioned that Moir was Hunt's uncle in the pre-game thread which was the first I'd heard of it

My memories  are that Andy Moir was a very talented but frustrating player. Typical of many half forward flankers of the era he could star one week and kick a bag and then barely get a touch for a month. Could take a fair hanger too

capable of a great mark, went missing for periods of time (possibly due to the lack of ball in the forward line), and averaged around a goal a game. seemed capable of so much more. 70's version of an ex-Demon who was MIA on Sunday

I remember Andy Moir well. A bit of a pretty boy, who got my hopes up that we had a potential champion, but he flattered to deceive. Surprised that it wasn't brought up earlier that he was Hunt's uncle, and that Jayden had been given the no. 29.

Didn't hear Hamish say it but heard it from one of the family members I sat with at the game to watch Jayden's debut.

Hamish McLachlan knows the family through a connection with Uni Blues.

I'll fess up  - playing kick to kick in the street I used like to be referenced as Andy Moir - which meant two things

  1. I would jump on mates heads to take a speccy - successful about one in ten - like Andy Moir
  2. I would get the ball and baulk, shimmy, blindturn and sidestep - without an opponent within 20 metres of me - also like Andy Moir

I remember him well - he was my cousin's boyfriend while he was playing. (She is still an avid Dee supporter). I thought he was developing into a good player, very skillful and elusive. If I recall correctly Ron Barassi showed him to the door shortly after arriving.

I remember that he took a big mark or two in his career.

In a side that was pretty poor anyone who did anything slightly spectacular stuck in the mind.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session. BLWNBA'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I arrived at around 1015 and the squad was already out on the track. The rehab group consisted of XL, McAdam, Melksham, Spargo and Sestan. Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
