Everything in your post is incorrect.

If Hurley decides to leave at the end of this season and its approved by the AFL, he'll be treated as if he is a delisted free agent. Essendon won't get anything.

This is why some believe the AFL won't allow the banned Essendon players to walk because the club won't get any compensation.

He needs to be delisted to become a delisted free agent. Why would Essendon in their right mind delist a player who would net them a band 1 compo if he leaves as a RFA.

and why would Hurley even bother trying to take another avenue when he is a free agent?

Because they are allowed to become a delisted free agent due to the situation with WADA. It's not complicated.

Did you miss the big song and dance about Heppell "recomitting" to Essendon last week, when he already had a contract until 2020? Every banned player can walk from the club if they so desire, and Essendon would get nothing.

Hence the AFL's desperation to get players committing, even if it means allowing "compensation" payments to players direct from the Essendon coffers that conveniently fits outside the salary cap.

He's not a free agent..

If he chooses to walk out on the club because of the breach of contract by the EFC he would be treated as a delisted free agent, meaning Essendon wouldn't get compo.

Because of this whole 'saga' he can just walk out.

I'm trying to be as basic as possible here.

If his contracted that scenario makes sence

if he is not a free agent, again possible

but he is not either of the above. Why on earth would he decide to stir up [censored] when he doesn't need to? And if he did decide that why would the AFL bother to sign off on it?

if he leaves he will take the path of least resistance which means not worrying about clauses to become delisted free agent.

because he can (potentially) become a dfa via breach of contract irrespective of  essendon delisting him

secondly, if he doesn't want to become a dfa then he can't be a rfa because he would not be out of contract therefore no afl compo picks

is that clearer?

People are dreaming if they think he will walk as a delisted free agent when he doesn't need to.

If he leaves he will go as a free agent and Bombers will get band 1 compo.

He's contracted until the end of 2017.

He will get a compensation payout.

He might want to leave the club he trusted who injected him with substances they've forgotten the names of.

He's likely to earn double what's he's on now.

He'd be treated as a DFA in resepcts of the compensation Essendon would get, which is none.

He would still get to the club of his choice.

If he was contracted then why are they chasing his signature?

I am sure Essendon will let him leave as an RFA if they get band one compo opposed to risking it and being difficult and getting nothing.

For the love of God! He can't leave "as a free agent" because he isn't entitled to free agency status. All he's allowed to do is bin his contract and walk to other clubs under the category of Delisted Free Agent.

All current banned Essendon players have this right, and this right alone, simply due to Essendon's breach of contract for allowing a WADA-breaching injection regime into the club.

I just don't see why any player would consider going to Richmond come the end of this year or even now.

Players would seriously re-consider Collingwood as an option too. I reckon the league is starting to pick up on our young midfield and opposition players will be far more amenable to coming over from now on.

Hurley would be good. I wonder what cap space we'd allot for him if we re-sign Hogan (which I think we will) as well. We've got to be very careful who we choose to pay and how much.

I'd be rapt if we nabbed Hurley. Melksham, McCartney and Goodwin handy acquisitions in such a decision. Interesting that Richmond has entered the fray at Round 8 and we were rumoured to be into him in late March.

Tigers asleep at the wheel again with a late bid. #desperation

Looks like it will be very difficult to prise Hurley out of Essendon.  Denham says he can only go via a trade.  (Not sure what happened to the AFLPA agreement that they could leave as dfa's...AFL quietly changed that????).

Denham says efc don't want picks but a like for like player:  Rance from Tigers, Hogan from us.  Ha!  EFC are ntoriously difficult to deal with but its laughable if they think either trade will happen!

I reckon wait till he is an RFA...2017.

I don't believe there ever was an 'agreement'.  The theory was that a player could challenge the conditions of their contract and have that contract voided - making him a delisted free agent.

We won't give up anything for him if he's only one year away from RFA status. And we certainly won't be trading away any picks or players if he can be a DFA.

denham is only reporting what essendon are saying, it's not his opinion

a thought just occurred to me. could essendon make any compensation conditional on players not attempting to break their contracts?

Agree SF. Essendrug are notoriously delusional when it comes to trying to trade with them. Would only go after Hurley if he classifies as some form of free agent (RFA/DFA).

Otherwise, would rather we invest our time in potential trades we have a genuine chance of completing, as opposed to stuffing around with Dodoro (Saints and Jake Carlisle just took too long).

Forget what EFC are saying, it's what they are doing that counts. They are trying to get their players to commit to the club, why bother if they are contracted and can't walk. Why the big fuss about Heppell who was also contracted.

Connors is out their seeking a deal for his player, he must believe his contract is is worth nix....

Good luck to EFC going back to the courts again, how did that work last time and the time before and the????

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator attended training out at Casey Fields to bring you the following observations from Preseason Training. GATOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS There were 5 in the main rehab group, namely Gawn, Petracca, Fullarton, Woewodin and Lever.  Laurie was running laps by himself, as was Jefferson.  Chandler, as has been reported, had his arm in a sling.  Lindsay did a bit of lap running later on. Some of the ''rehab 5'' participated in non contact drills and b

KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti
