Just out of curiosity I thought id look back at the team which ran out for Round 1, 2014 - Paul Roos first game as Demons coach.

Even my Hawthorn-supporting girlfriend watched the Melbourne game on the TV today. Very impressed. Just have to beat her team to convert her.

 

Did you like anything about the game today, Adam?  Not happy with work rate, disposal, certain players... I didn't realise we got rolled by 10 goals today.

I'm not saying the game was perfect, far from it, but as a supporter I thought we tended to look more at the positives (and there were plenty) after winning our first game for the season over good opposition.

Roos on Watts:  "He is super smart, a good ball user, definitely a lot fitter now, his contest work is really terrific."

No greater praise could be given to Jack, especially from his coach.  Time for all the JW knockers to pack up!

I feel sick looking at that 22.  I forget we were that bad to kick off the season.

What a job everyone at the club has done to get us to where we are now.

And surely we leave just one player forward or out on the wing, so if we do have to get a quick kick off, we know where to aim it and we don't have a 100% guarantee it's coming straight back.  The way we set up meant we were always going to have to defend one dangerous inside 50 no matter what.

Poor coaching/planning that could have easily cost us the game!

We had players on the wings. We needed to win a clearance sideways, but Gawn was dumb there.

Actually i think Tommy Bugg was famous for giving a bit of lip when he was at GWS. Toby Greene is another one im pretty sure. I remember reading a few years ago that a GWS player was giving lip to Robert Murphy and the umpire told the GWS guy to show murphy some respect because he had been in the game a lot longer than he had. 

But a small non meaningful thing I did notice watching the sport on the news tonight was they showed the coaches box at the end when the siren went and I noticed Roos was in the 2nd row and Goodwin was in the front. Im sure the past few years Roos was always in the front. Guess he is letting Goodwin see it from the front. Roosy still had the phone in his hand like he always does.

No. People's enjoyment of his good play and like for him doesn't have to mean they 'rate' him. I enjoy watching him play and I rate him as a young prospect. 

His disposal picked up in the second half. Around the ground it's not too far off. Needs to nail goals more consistently.

Then he needs to read the play better which he'll probably do as he gets more games especially if the team starts playing with more predictability.

That was a sensational feeling in the crowd today when we started stringing goals together in the fourth.  Then right at the end when the whisper went around that there was only 10 seconds left and we're two points up...  This time we made sure we had numbers back and held the lead. 

28,500-odd in the crowd today, and if there were 50 GWS supporters I'd be shocked.  Awesome effort from the fans to come out in numbers and get behind the team. 

For those saying we stole the game and GWS should have had it by 10 goals, how is their missing shots on goal any different from us missing passes to our forwards?  If you apply the same standard then we would have had more scoring shots and wound up ahead anyway. 

On that topic, our delivery to the forwards was disgraceful for most of the match.  Too many of our mids still can't hit a leading target and it killed poor Jesse for three quarters.  In the second and third the majority of our F50 entries were to the advantage of the defenders.  One horrid example in Q3, Harmes was free in the 50.  A pass of no more than 30m or so from HF missed him by a good 20m and landed in the middle of three unmarked defenders.  To Harmes' credit, he hurled himself into the pack and managed to prevent a mark, but could do nothing to stop them taking it away. 

Following on from THAT topic, it's no mistake that our success in the fourth came off the back of getting some good ball-users into the middle.  Jones to HB, Oliver as the extractor and Garlett and Watts delivering forward made a huge difference and you could see how happy Hogan was when he finally got a decent pass from Watts and clunked the mark. 

Re next week, aside from OMac hurting his ankle, I'm pretty sure I saw Kent limping off the ground in the fourth.  I would think if he's hurt they'd bring in Petracca as a straight swap.  It would be a great game for him to debut. 

Overall, I'm pretty happy with this game.  3 goals between both sides for the whole of Q2 and 3 is a poor effort, but we fought it out, we kept in touch and we saw some really good play in the final quarter to take it away from them.  Bring on next week.

Well, if you read my first post you would know I was pretty balanced in my assessment of the game. I just get sick of people crapping on about Kent and then watch him have very little influence and butcher the ball half the time.

Hogan barely attempted a lead or three quarters, he was forcing the midfield to sit it on his head.

Just watched the final quarter again.

- Our first two goals were both started with a C. Oliver centre clearance.

- Jack Watts kicks a goal within 90 seconds, and his extravagant celebration with teammates comes with the clear message. "We can win this"

- Hogan 3 goals, one assist (shepherd on the line), a nice pass to Kennedy (who missed) and the match saving spoil. True definition of a 'match winner'.

- Kennedy was directly involved with 3 goals. He also thwarted a GWS forward thrust at a critical stage with a near 'impossible' spoil (i.e. running back with the flight without impeding his opponent).

- Garlett was involved in multiple scoring chains once pushed up the field.

- Tom McDonald very involved and regularly hit target by foot.

Umpiring was very inconsistent

GWS guys kept running headlong head down into MFC opponents and were paid frees

I have always been a JW fan but in fairness to "the knockers" he had, until now, not been renowned for exactly having a zest for the contest........this preseason and today he seems to have developed self belief and realizes that going hard at contests is actually very rewarding.  

IMVHO this was Jack's best game.  Keep it up.

dunno, howe does like to fly high.  Benken likes to keep his feet on the ground.   A reasonable swap IMO.

eddie's a high flyer you know,  he doesn't make rash decisions.   occasional whiteline fever ed,  when he goes off. 

 

I wonder if the swans had a go (recent news),  to get ed back for all his bellyaching & trouble making.   ed cost the players up there dollars.

The Jack Watts I saw on the news,  is the Watts I wanted us to recruit.   This is how he played (style of play),  in the U-18's games I watched him in.

Hogan was woeful for 3 quarters, but as everyone says, it may not be your game but it can be your quarter, and his last quarter was match winning.
