I think his game on the weekend exceeded the minimum requirement. Making the AFL's Team of the Week isn't and shouldn't be the minimum requirement. His general form shown in pre-season set the standard.

So you're going to evaluate output based on arbitrary evaluations like an AFL team of the week ?

Interesting.

He hasn't signed on again yet, it's as simple as keep this form up and he'll get a new contract, if he doesn't he can look elsewhere, the club owes him nothing, he's had plenty of time to show something and has only ever shown patches.

Not solely, no, but it certainly adds to his case I would've thought.

He was a signifiicant factor in us winning that game. I think to expect that to be a par performance is a stretch.

I'm more referring to effort in contests (ground and air).

Performance follows effort.

The efforts he's shown in 2016 have superceded anything previously (7 years).

Beyond dispute I would have thought.  And a minimum requirement henceforth.

Would be ironic if he left now.

Delivers on promise, leaves to another team. It's very Melbourne like.

Doubt it'll happen though.

There is no way known he's leaving. Viney and Jones are the only two I'd be more surprised by if they left.

Strictly in relation to effort, I'd agree.

Apparently Roos can laud his improved contested work and say he took a "significant step forward", but supporters aren't allowed such observations.

Simply cannot disagree with this.

That said, if making All Australian is the minimum standard, then Watts must produce that type of game week in, week out.

I think his game last week, which was bloody awesome, exceeds the minimum standard - but I'd be stoked if he manages to produce it week in, week out. We'll be playing finals if he can - and we get a good run with injuries.

Its win win for the club.

I like Jack, and hope his improved form continues. I think he owes the Club more than vice versa. The Club has stuck by him even though he has

underperformed for years. It would be very disappointing if he left, but I think that's unlikely.

I'm not sure what is so hard to understand.

Imo, every one of his last 4 games (including the 3 NAB games) have met the minimum standard.

They've all had the prerequisite effort and the performances have followed.

I must be talking Swahili.

Jack Watts' output for MFC has been disappointing, but MFC input to Jack Watts has been more disappointing.  He has needed guidance to realise his talent.  Could he have landed at a more dysfunctional club than ours?  It would have been fascinating to see if he started at Hawthorn, Geelong, Sydney or West Coast.  It seems as though we've got our development in order now and we have a competitive list so Jack now has a level playing field.

I agree totally.  As a perennial JW supporter, I cannot understand how people are so dismissive of the impact that continuous incompetent development and repeated changes in the coaching group on an intelligent and thoughtful individual like JW.  We should be thankful that we haven't destroyed his desire to play footy.  Get off his back and acknowledge the great loyalty shown to this point.

Agreed. Imagine he had gone to Hawthorn, worked his way slowly and quietly up through the VFL and played as a third tall forward under the protection and guidance of Franklin and Roughead...

The club has stuck by him? Wow. As opposed to what - delisting one of their best 10-15 players? You're kidding.

Of course the club has stuck by him.  We could have traded him away multiple times.  But we could always see the potential and we've given him the opportunity to reach that, which it seems he is now doing.

The Neeld years set Jack back more than the club. He didn't get guidance, just abuse. That was when he went to get counselling from Malthouse of all people.

Cant wait till Jack signs.  Reckon he has put in too much 'blood, sweat and tears' to walk away now!

Well, lets see him play the season out,  to see howe it pans out.

I want to be convinced he is going to play to this attitude & style,  every game.

I think Jack still feels he owes the club, and i think he's been building the last couple of years, flashes of what he can do in 2014, had a consistent patch in 2015 but couldn't keep it up and now he looks like he's put it all together and it's finally clicked for him

Improved fitness & strength will help him a lot.

Maybe thats what him being dropped for the last game,  last season,  was all about.

Amazing how after a win and a few preseason games people jump on Jack and conveniently forget the years of poor footy he played. I couldnt GAS about this 'face of the club' or 'his heart beats red n blue' rubbish. Just play consistent, good footy for the club. I truly hope he has a cracker of a year, re-signs and plays good footy for years to come at the Dees, rather than cruise on good coin. But let's not get ahead of ourselves, his career to date has been disappointing. Matthew Lloyd is largely right, Jack has been gifted 100 games of AFL footy.

its not forgotten moon.  he owes a lot.  He has to show a lot.

He'll be tested very soon physically.  He has to stand up to it,  & not take it.  He has to show he'll fight & win.  Then the game, Win.

If he is to be of any use in future finals games,  in years to come then he has to be able to fight back,  & to raise his efforts.
