The Kalani White Thread

Hang on. So I assumed Kalani was a ruck prospect, but he's playing KPF at U16 level? If he kicks it anything like his old man, he could be an exciting KPF prospect. Bit like a Darcy really. Old man was a ruckman, and the son becomes a KPP.

Can he get drafted early?

true, lol.  but he only has one birthday per year.

Not if he’s born in a leap year, which clearly he wasn’t if he’s 16 this odd year

That must be why I never got drafted into the AFL, though it did get me drafted in a worse draft, for the Vietnam War.

The laugh emoji is at your AFL draft comment, certainly not towards getting drafted to the Vietnam war

No worries. Luckily for me I was studying and then Gough got in and sent me a card I still keep, which read “ your services are no longer required”.

Never received a better sacking.

On a serious note, I have the utmost respect for the men and women who served and continue to do so. Their bravery is truly admirable.

Yep, my best mates dad was drafted and to this day there’s still moments he doesn’t wish to discuss which is fully understood

We know we are getting a KPF/KPB in Kalani White in 2025.  That allows us to prioritise our draft picks working around that. Other list managers complained about that in relation to the Swans Academy. They knew they had mids coming through so could prioritise accordingly in prior drafts. Hence they rarely bottom out for more than a season.

Lets hope no AFL F/S rule changes.

We need another elite mid or speedy small forward this draft - or both.

There is a difference between bid and nominate. Ashcroft nominated Brisbane and was bid on by North.

White can nominate Melbourne but there is nothing stopping GCS bidding on him.  its up to Melbourne to match the bid.

I never understand why people post stuff which is just plain wrong and shows they don't know what they are talking about. Still school holidays isnt it.

So you're saying that 'under the academy process' Gold Coast 'can bid'... with exactly no additional priority or access at all compared to any other club, and you thought this was an important point to share.

One of my pet peeves is people who make a nonsensical claim, get pulled up on it and then change their story and act like other people are foolish for not understanding what they didn't say to begin with.

You claimed Gold Coast had a right to bid on F/S nominees through the academy process. This is an entirely incorrect claim which you presented as fact. The claim could both confuse and anger people who believed it.

Own your mistake, move on, and perhaps 'embrace the learnings' of the experience.

Here's a profile from rookie me central following Kalani White's selection in the 2023 AFL U16 All Australian Team

Profile

Centre Half Back: Kalani White
Suns Academy | 197cm | 05/05/2007

One of six Suns Academy players in the All Australian side, White comes from good pedigree as the son of 1994 number one pick, Jeff White. That means he’s father-son eligible at Melbourne – though, not Fremantle – on top of his Gold Coast ties. White played at either end of the field and was an aerial asset, rising high for plenty of eye-catching marks and moving fluently as a tall and rangy key position prospect.

Jeepers! Buy Gold Coast Suns shares. 5 of the starting 18 are from the Suns academy which is the same number as all of Victoria. Lucky one of them is coming to us

Plus potentially 3 in the top 10 this year. When are the northern states going to stop getting free hits.

with academy priority picks is there any limit to how many you can draft (with discount) in any draft year?

My understanding is that if they make finals, they are restricted to taking a maximum of 2 in the top 20.

I believe 2 is the maximum.

It is a dilemma faced by GCS this draft as they have 3 players rated in the first round, 2 possibly in the top 10 so one will be up for grabs.

They will need lots of points for the 2 top 10 possibilities so a good chance for us to trade for their first round pick.  They have been good trading partners in the past so if both want to deal a deal should get done.

Jeff could certainly kick a footy, wouldn't have made a bad KPF himself if he wasn't such a gem in ruck.

The AFL want it to work up there, so there'll keep getting concessions until they are...

Thanks @Lucifers Hero. I can't find anything online about this. Lot's of stuff about how the points system works (20% discount), ability to go into deficit etc.

Cal Thomey has the 3 Gold Coast Academy players at 2, 8 & 11 as of this morning:

https://www.afl.com.au/news/981930/cal-twomey-s-phantom-form-guide-top-draft-prospects-july-ranking

I assume they could try and take all 3 but only match bids on the first 2 under the Northern Academy Draft Rules?
They'll try to trade out Pick 6 for points. At this stage could they trade say 6 & 44 for Melbourne's 18, 23 & 37 (assuming of course Melbourne are Premiers in 2023 😀).

P.S. Have also posted this under Draft Prospects thread.

I believe I heard that on the Gettable podcast.

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had
