You can let him know that when he calls you for approval of his career choices.

Yeah right - I'm sure if you were unemployed & got offered $200,000 for a year's work you would knock it back on principle.

Why?    They will have get their top up players from somewhere.    Another year of an AFL wage beats the hell out of wages in the minor league.

understand all that, bd. it is just a subjective opinion. i'm not going to castigate him or anything, it's just my gut feeling, ok

Do you think they'll be able to offer that?  With the amount of expenses they are already having to go through my gut feeling is that they may be only able to offer rookie type wages.  That's just my assumption though.

No worries DC........We differ in our opinions.    Would be boring if we all agreed on everything.

Good on him for having a go.

I know that if I was a recently retired AFL player, who'd just finished up a 10 year + career, I'd be fat as a horse (ala Brian Lake).  Well done Russ on staying in shape.

It raises an interesting question regards total player payments. The 12 missing would make up a very significant chunk of the cap.

Essendon may ultimately benefit financially due to concessions on top ups.

Interesting.

Actually , it poses an interesting question - do Essendon next year still have to pay 92% of the salary cap ? If they do a lot of very ordinary players are going to be paid wayyyyyy too much money.

Edit - McQueen - it appears we were interested at exactly the same time......

If Crossy is fair dinkum about going to the dark side, they must get rid of him now.

He is privy to game plans and surely he must have signed a confidentiality statement.

crossy is under contract to the mfc. would need permission from mfc to be released from contract

Interesting.

Gill said there salary cap would be increased. He didn't elaborate whether the AFL would help with the payment of top up players.

I believe Essendon should pay for any Top ups.

Pretty sure that he's been playing up in Darwin, so it would make sense that the Bombers would target top-up players who have some fitness levels ahead of those who haven't done a proper preseason.

Doubt that he'll make a huge difference, so good luck to him.

Does anyone remember as well as me the day Jamar took on Bellchambers who used him like one of those springboards they use to do slam dunks at the basketball ?? I was on the first level of the MCC members and could have looked Bellchambers in the eye.

I wouldn't be troubled about the Russian. I am more worried that the AFL website is suggesting Daniel Cross as one of Essendon's "top-up" players. This cosy top-up arrangement is going to impact on every Club to their detriment in addition to the damage caused by the banned players at other Clubs.

I don't understand how that could now happen as Cross is contracted in a developmental role at the club.

Understandably he wanted to play on last year and I'm sure he is still top-notch from a physical stand point, but he would be sacrificing an on-going job if he decides to play on for one more year the Essendon.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
