Rivers, Sylvia, N Jones given MFC Life Membership Awards

Given comments elsewhere DL's have varied views about 2 of the 3 (Nathan is universally loved).

Whatever one's view I'm glad the Club can welcome back players that have chosen to leave.

Congratulations to Rivers, Col and Nat!

Must  be a shortage of Life Membership material.

Col and Rivers were a big part of our past. I think a life membership is a nice touch.

10 years at the footy club. Yes they all deserve the life membership.

Hopefully Rivers does some development coaching at the Pies then comes back to the Dees

Sylvia.. surely this is a joke

Indeed.

Can someone please give a summary of the criteria required?

Wow, length of service only?

150 game is basically the criteria that gets you a life memberships. Regardless of what these player did in the past some of the comments are a bit uncalled for and silly. 150 games is still a mighty effort in AFL footy especially at one club now days.

Well done to Riv and Col and looking forward to seeing these guys at the past players bar barracking for us in the near future.

Call me petty but while happy for Chunky and Rivers, can't say I get any joy in seeing Col get life membership. Got selected more on potential than performance, was a lazy selfish footballer who would have been shown the door from a real football club years before he was by ours.

that said, half of those bagging him now vigorously defended him when each year the few of us called for the clown to be traded

Yes and thank god for that!!! If only Col managed a pre - season would have been a gun . What a joke!

Colin leaving resulted in us getting Bernie Vince.  We are forever in his debt.

Mind you Tom Scully jumping ship got us Jesse Hogan so maybe Tom deserves Life Membership as well.

I shudder to think what the comments around here might be if Jack Watts ever gets a life membership.

More deserving than Sylvia I would expect!

However as life membership is given for 10 year service (I believe) Jack's still a few years away.

Col Sylvia played 157 games and kicked 129 goals for the Melbourne Football Club in probably the worst period for the footy club. (Tanking..Lack of money....Poor admin....Poor team)

It is interesting that so many people love to stick the boots in to a player that did not meet their expectations.

He also gave 10 years service.

People say he was a party boy, lazy, injured, not up to it.   It takes all types to make up a footy team or else we should just use robots.

It is so easy to sit in the stands or watch on TV and think we are so much better. (usually after a few beers)

So.....I say well done Col on your life membership and you are always welcome at the footy club

Agree Bossdog a little gracefulness by some people would not go astray.

hopefully next time we announce life memberships they will be 3 one-club players and 3 players that got the most out of themselves

Col never put in the effort that is why people arent keen on him getting life membership - not cause he left.  him getting one cheapens the honour for the likes of Jones

No problems with this - it's not like they are in the team of the century...

Only pettiness would keep them from what should be theirs because of how they left, or because of what they didn't fulfil.

I can't agree. Life membership is for 10 years service. Col played for the dees for 10 years. Its not a value based award and doesn't cheapen the honor for Jones, or any one else, in the slightest. And jeez louise its not as if Col is an axe murderer

Mixed feeling about his one, while i appreciated the services of both (not even mentioning Jones, well deserved), Im not sure only time should be the factor for getting life membership.  I would think that being a club man first would be more fitting than how many games you have played for how many years you played them for.  I do not class either of them to be club men.

Having played for a club for 10 years and over 150 games?   Why does that not qualify you for a life membership?

Who then should qualify?    How can you tell who, are club men and who are not.?

Is it just the vibe? or because they left due to free agency?

Just wondering.

So then it becomes a value judgement made at the time by someone. Does not work like that you do the time you get the award it is that simple unless of course there were serious problems with you at the club and then it might be withheld. Simply not liking someone ain't grounds to withhold the award.

In all honest how do you know what sort of "clubman" either player was at the time they  played for the MFC?

From the outside they appeared fine to me.
