Another big improvement by our current FD is their ability to identify early good players who were open to leaving and whom had some value. 

Frawley, a very good backman who as too old to feature in our next tilt for pick 3 - Brayshaw or Petracca, was an inspired working of the system. 

Howe, for pick XY, Melksham or whomever (is it clear who we got for Howe's picks?) may prove to be likewise. 

They've taken our loss of good players and built a better team, it seems...

No. He was just a kid. Why do we assume very young footballers in pressure situations can act like sophisticated adults in the world of business or politics (both of whom, as it happens, also struggle to tell the truth)?

Scully would have been well within his rights to refuse to answer, but he was being questioned by a legend of the game, the club president, who was terminally ill.  He shouldn't have lied, but I don't find it hard to understand, or forgive.

Given Jimmy's state of health at the time, I expect he was concerned about the future of the club, and so he asked.  But he shouldn't have.

Scully was invited to Jimmy's home for dinner to discuss his future.  Scully knew he would be asked.  Jimmy had every right to ask it.  If Scully didn't want to answer it he should not have gone to the dinner or should have taken his manager, parent or whoever.  Why is that any different to when someone like Eddie invites a current (eg Cloke) or future player to his home to discuss their future or contract.  It isn't. 

Scully is in the past and I don't care about him but I do care about the aspersions being made of Jim.  Like the rest of us he made mistakes but asking Scully his intentions wasn't one of them.  Scully had been holding out all year, someone had to ask him!

Why? Correct me if I'm wrong, but the rules at the time meant that Scully and GWS couldn't sign a contract or make any announcements until the end of the season. In effect, Scully, GWS and Melbourne were each placed in an impossible position. But given the club knew that there were only two outcomes - he stays or he goes - it wasn't that hard for the club to plan around both scenarios. So, what was to be gained by asking the question?

I'm pretty sure there was a loophole in the rules that meant that GWS (and GC the year before) could sign players a year prior to their current contract ending. There was also a rumour that Scully wanted to back out of the contract with GWS as the public pressure built up, but it was too late for him to do so.

I watched the replays of the Collingwood and GWS games on the weekend. Jeremy Howe took some great marks, gave away frees, 50m penalties and hardly hit a target. I think we will be a better side without him.

(How sad-watching replays at this time of year I hear you say. My son has returned from os after 2 years away, we had some footy to share. Big dees fan!)

Don't get me wrong - I am very happy that he has gone somewhere else - is he still playing AFL?

 

We have done incredibly well out of his departure.

 

But, I just despise him and cannot forgive him for lying to a dying great of our club, of the game, when he could and should have done what others have, and obfuscated.   Others may choose to forgive but I cannot and will not.

I am pretty level headed about my football and whilst I have passion, footy is a part of my life amongst other things and I move on pretty quickly. I am not sure why but that little rodent still upsets me. Not because he took the money ( good on him I say), not because he is gone ( we did much better out of the deal) but because, as you said he could have fudged the leaving scenario but went outright lies and deception.

I don't care that he is gone at all

BUT the vision of him looking straight down the Camera saying

"I want to be a one club player"

i knew he was lying and as a member of the club he was lying to, Felt very angry and still do whenever i think of it.
