Free Agents

With free agency starting today I thought I'd start a thread on it. Since Garland has re-signed we have no risk of diluting any compo so I expect us to go hard at bringing in a free agent.

Any thoughts on who we may go after?

Posted

None is my thought.

Only free agents i expect to see moving are Dangerfield (contract matched), Scott Selwood & Leuenberger.

Posted

Suckling might get some offers given how few unrestricted free agents are left. Not sure if it will be us that offers, but he could be leaving the Hawks.

Posted

We should at least have a crack at Selwood, surely Geelong can't offer much with Dangermouse taking up any spare cap they had.

Posted

Dangerman is the only one worth a last minute go.

I hope we are into Suckling and Selwood big time. Both wouldn't cost anything in terms of draft picks and won't water down any other compo for us.

We are terrible by foot and Suckling is the best kick in the comp. I don't really buy the 'he only looks good because he plays for Hawthorn, he won't look any good here'. He'll still be ok in an ordinary side. He gets a game every week in the best side ever. He is a better player than most on our list and he wants only a bit more than what we were paying Jordie McKenzie.

Selwood is a genuine B+ midfielder when fully fit.

Jon Ralph said earlier this week that Melbourne were about $1m short of the cap this year, which rolls forward to next year's cap. So we have about $2m to play with. Make these blokes offers they can't refuse and front-load most of it into next year.

It might also be the case that some of the cap space money might be thrown at Hogan in a extended contract offer.

Selwood is worth a look if he was a chance of regaining his form from 2011 - '14. Injuries have played a part in a poor couple of seasons and the emergence of other Eagle midfielders have not helped his selection chances this year.

Posted

Leuenberger a near certainty to go to Swans with Pyke retiring you'd expect.

Suckling may go to the Dogs.

he's 31yrs, I didn't realise he was that age.

I'd definitely look at Whitecross.

Lauded for his leadership at Hawthorn.

Leadership is a vastly overrated quality in a footballer. How many captains can you fit on the field? Yes you need few really good leaders, preferably capable of playing the game to a high standard as well, but you don't need 22 of them on the ground. What you need is great footballers who will follow where the leaders lead.

As a young side starved of success we need all the leaders we can get. There were games this year where our leaders went completely missing when we needed them. Its also not just about on field but most important off field aswell eg training standards, work ethic and dicipline etc. Gotta continue to drive and create a culture that will scream success. Whitecross wouldn't be a bad option at all considering he has come from one of the best teams of the modern era he just would be a handy depth player. Id much rather him then Adcock.

Free agents are a free bargain to clubs yet they are monopolised by the top clubs.

Most free agents go to top 8 clubs (Dangerfield and Selwood going to Cats for home coming reasons). Not quite the equaliser mooted by Demetriou at the time.

Yes agree we should call Whitecross and ask about his future. 2 year contract may be favorable.

Amazed by that decision from Leuenberger. Surely you'd rather go to Sydney over Essendon no matter the money!

So am I, but he chose the better city to live in IMO.

Yeah, nah. No.

Any one surprised we didn't try and lure Luenberger given he is a free agent and would have effectively cost us a spot on the list. A decent replacement for Jamar?

He wants to be a #1 ruckman, and we've got Gawn to play that role for us.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
