Actually it was '97. He got drafted at the end of that year. Had an unbelievable game for Nth Ballarat who won the game. He was everywhere. I remember thinking whoever gets him is going to have a star on their hands and yet he only went for pick 47. Couldn't believe my luck that he ended up at Sydney so I got to watch him playing up here for his whole career.

You can argue all you like about why he was made AOTY but obviously he didn't get it for being a footballer, he got it for being a man who fought against racism. He wouldn't have got it without having the profile he gained by being one of the greatest AFL players in history but he also didn't get it for that he got it for his off field work. Why argue about it. Move on.

As far as I am concerned the booing of him this year has been the lowest point I have experienced following VFL/AFL over more than fifty years. It's a very sad reflection and indictment on our society. That it grew to the level it did and even continued last night just makes me sad. At least the most divisive PM in Australian history is gone, let's hope things are looking up.

Roll on our Grand Final....... Trade Week!

bit of a cheap shot right at the end of a good post, it.

to link the ex pm to the racist booing treatment of goodes was below the belt and an unnecessary partisan intrusion to a discussion on goodes

Goodes was booed during attempts on goal by opposition fans who wanted their team to win the match. They thought it would put him off and twice they were wrong. It's quite traditional for oppo fans to try to attempt to make a player miss a shot on goal by booing. Collingwood fans have it down to a fine art. We have done it too.

FMD. Pineapple, did you just crawl out from under a rock? He hasn't been booed this season to put him off his goal kicking. Nice try though.

I'm talking about what I noticed when he was kicking on goal this weekend. Clearly that was racism only. Wish I hadn't mentioned it.

amazing career.

one of my favourite AFL players.

Very sad he was booed. The hawks supporters started it. flogs.

every other team joined in after he was asked if he thought the booing was racist - he replied "i dont know, youd have to ask them." Of course the headlines the next day were "Goodes booing racist". Media flogs.

And to the people who say "oh it was because he dived etc". Half of the AFL dives. Boomer has dived for 400 games +. He is not booed like Goodes was.
If youre saying it was because he picked on a 13 year old girl? Her family and Society let her down - she should know that it is highly racist and the fact her guardians didnt go with her when she was escorted out is their disgrace, not his.
That people are upset (and i hear this one all the time) because he "incited" the crowd with his war dance and pretending to throw a spear is a horrible reflection on our society as a whole. Also im yet to hear a person who was ACTUALLY THERE have this opinion.

totally agree with whoever it was who said the booing of goodes was the lowest point in their afl following life. honestly it was pathetic.

I feel a deep sorrow that his career will in large part not be remembered for the amazing player he is and the aboriginal ambassador that he also is, but for the controversy that followed him, caused by inaccurate media reporting and racist flogs looking for an excuse to be racist.

I hope he does a lap of honour in GF day it would be an embarrassment that he doesn't.

Not sure why he would bother. Run around the Gee and get booed by the usual brain dead sections who manage to get into every game somehow. you know the deadshytes who never played a game of real footy yet feel they can abuse a great as if they have something in common. I must say I hope the powers at North read the riot act to the cheer squad, not that it will help. Damage is done.

Correct, that was when he slid feet first into Gibson which had the potential to cause great injury.

Then the following week there was the incident with the girl in the crowd at the Collingwood game.

which is worthy of a free kick and some booing at the time.

Hawks fans are the ones who laud the likes of Hodge as a great bloke when we all know he is really just a pathetic sniper and epic [censored].

He is not booed nearly to the same extent.

The other thing people dont like Goodes for is because (they say) he called australia day "invasion day".

Again - media misrepresentation. What he actually said was along the lines of "There are some who call it "invasion day". We should get past that and come together and celebrate our great country" or words to that effect.

but the goodes booers dont look deeper than "call it invasion day"

I bloody well call it Invasion Day and I don't suffer any of the garbage that Goodes does. It is what it is.

Amazing isn't it. Hodge is a sniper, with multiple reports. Whilst on his latest suspension he drinks and drives, putting the community at risk. Cops a few boos but he's a good bloke and normal transmission resumes

Then why are Hawthorn fans "flogs" for booing him when you said he was "worthy" of being booed at the time?

AT THE TIME. as in for that game at the most.

not for 2 years every time he gets the ball....

we booed some long haired brisbane bloke for giving kent? a whack in the head. we booed him for 20 mins.

Rubbish. Without the football career he would have had even more time to devote to his other work, might have been Australian Of The Century then...

But that's beside the fact that you're trying to move the goal posts while you continue to (deliberately?) miss the basic point that the award was nothing to do with football, not even one bit.

But feel free to just ignore facts and keep booing, you're in good company there.

I haven't moved any goal posts...You are guessing what his career might have been.

I am stating that Football is the reason Goodes is known & why he has a profile.

That is a fact.

I never booed the man..but i do not agree with Sports People being given such high awards

This award should be for People who save lives or in the case of science take life to another level.

I didn't say it to start an argument..it's my opinion & always has been

But you keep on kicking and screaming coz that's what you do best

But you were being critical of Hawthorn supporters who "started it", but also acknowledge it was "worthy".

As I mentioned, the following week there was the incident with the girl in the crowd which made all the booing one big messy drama which has been handled poorly by all involved.

no. i said booing him for 20 mins might have been worthy.

not booing him every touch for the best part of 2 years.

the next game they were booing him because he "picked on" a 13yo girl - that was that years grand final.

we booed scully for one game. then we got over it - and he lied to a cancer ridden Jim Stynes' face!

Add Mitchell to that. Caught disabling players by kneeing them behind the play and gets a reprimand. Fyfe ended up missing a couple of weeks because of what Mitchell did to him. If he loses the Brownlow by a couple of weeks Mitchell will be responsible. Did the same thing to Tex Walker this year and he had to leave the ground for the rest of the game. Nasty little pot shot at the Essendon players indicating injecting himself. Wonder how he would feel if his Club had done that to him. Rotten, dirty, player. Do you hear him being booed like Goodes is.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
