At least Casey fought back and didn't get a percentage hammering. If Coburg win tomorrow then they'll move to 10th and make the Coburg v Casey match pretty much an elimination final.

Hopefully some of the Melbourne boys can get up next week.

Any reports on Fitzy and Toump would be appreciated.

Disappointing for both Fitzy and Toumpas, both appeared (from the comments/stats at least) to have started the game well and with both having uncertain futures, really disappointing for them to not be able to finish the game. Hopefully whatever injuries they've got aren't too severe.

Don't know the reason Fitzy wasn't around in the second half, but he copped a knock to the guts in the first qtr. He was seen to by a physio and a doctor and I overheard them talking about a bruised sternum. He came to the bench and looked in some discomfort and as walking a bit gingerly, but went back onto the field and later on in the 2nd qtr did a Gabelich / Manassa -like sprint (please someone give me a Demons analogy! edit - Woewodin!) for over 70m into the goal square to kick a goal, hotly chased all the way. He turned from a giraffe into a gazelle for that moment. So obviously the knock didn't limit his mobility at that stage.

Toump was in a tracksuit at the end of the last qtr. He was walking around OK, still with a bandage on his head, and was talking to his dad after the game. Didn't get to find out how he was.

I'm quite surprised he doesn't appear in our Bests. Thought he was good at giving us some options for switches across the midfield. No disrespect to Jamar, who might have done a little better in the ruck than Spence, but I thought Spence gave us far more than Jamar around the ground today, and stood out against many of our other players, not just Jamar. I'm not pushing his barrow for seniors selection, just think he deserves credit for his form today in the Casey team.

I liked Lovett's game last week more than today. He is still in the early days of learning his craft, but he has some smarts. I saw about 3 times today he panicked a little and it resulted in turnovers, but he also shows some poise (moreso last week) at times. He's not a tall kid at all, but well built. His disposal is generally neat. And he seems to be a bit more advanced than his young years, but IMHO that only gets him up to 'potential good Casey player' level at this stage of his development. If you're after draft selection advice, I'm not your man but, draft side, to me he is a project worth persisting with.

Good on you PF for enthusiasm but I am not on the same train. Needs more development in my book. But if you believe in the Book of Revelations and it works out in our favour, more power to you!

I too think he needs a more work, but I agree he has what it takes and should make it eventually. My understanding is that he didn't get taken in the main draft because clubs had doubts about his body holding up, so taking our time and making sure his body is built up properly before putting him up against the bigger and stronger AFL players. There isn't any real benefit to playing him this year. Give him another pre-season to bulk up a bit then unleash him.

I think both ruckmen did well and it might have been a toss up between them. However, in saying that, I don't think either of them did enough given who they were against. In fact, full credit must go to Williamstown which was a well drilled outfit with a lot of their players being a step away from AFL list level and yet showing up some of our MFC players. Apart from the players who went up to the AFL because of late injuries at Melbourne and the loss of Fitzpatrick and Toumpas in the second half, Casey was without two of its own important VFL listed players in skipper Panozza and forward Smith. They are now in a position where they must beat Coburg away to be sure of making finals.

On Mitch White, I agree that while he was impressive, I wouldn't have rated him Casey's best. However, these votes are probably given by the coaching panel who are privy to player instructions and the like which would IMO heavily influence how they vote. A player can only do what his coaches ask them to do and in those cases the player will poll better than a flashy footballer who breaks team rules.

maybe, the footy dept are setting up an rivalry to force the rucks to raise the bar on one another, one at a time? gradually creating a higher output of acceptance via this rivalry?

if on player plays well, but the level was below their better mean level of output, then why mention them, if they could have easily done better in this game than what they gave?

I don't know, but this may be an explanation ?

CASEY ALL AT SEA by KC from Casey

The Casey Scorpions lowered their colours for the fourth week in a row despite a much improved performance when they went down to the highly fancied Williamstown by 17 points at Casey Fields. The result was disappointing because a win would have entrenched their place in the finals and they now face some nervous moments over the last two home and away rounds before their ultimate fate is determined.

Already facing a challenge against the second placed Seagulls, the Scorpions suffered a major blow in the lead up to the game with the loss of skipper Evan Panozza and last minute injuries and illness to senior Demon players which cost them the benefit of two important in form midfielders Rohan Bail and Aidan Riley* who stepped up for AFL duty.

The team opened brightly with the first use of the breeze thanks to the dominance of Jake Fitzpatrick who had two goals from three shots at goal in the opening four minutes. He managed another by the quarter time break but thanks to a late burst that yielded the visitors two goals, the lead was a mere 10 points.

Fitzpatrick was then involved in an incredible solo goal when he ran 70 metres and took three bounces, before putting his team 16 points up at the three minute mark of the second term.

However, instead of inspiring the Scorpions, the goal stung the Seagulls into action and they booted five goals to none for the rest of the first half. To make matters worse, Casey's best two players - Fitzpatrick (blood-sugar level issues) and Jimmy Toumpas (concussion) failed to take the field after half time.

Casey struggled early in the third term but came back strongly late in the quarter and managed to grab the lead early in the fourth when Nathan Page kicked goal number three and stretched that to seven points with Mark Jamar's goal. However, the strain of playing catch-up with the limitations of reduced rotations took its toll and the Seagulls powered home to a 17 point win.

Youngsters Mitch White and Billy Stretch were adjudged Casey's best.

The result left Casey with a one game lead over ninth placed Coburg who they meet away from home next week. With two games to go before the finals, the outcome will most probably determine which of the team's makes the top eight.

* Riley was held back as the emergency for Sunday's game.
