No worries Fork. I still cant watch that replay mate, we had so many easy shots in the last 10 minues that we messed up. Worst day ive ever had at the footy, still not over it near 30 years later

87 Prelim, 88 GF , 2000GF and subsequent failures have all taken their toll.

if you have read of any of my works you would say "Cojones Grinter".

Recommend For Whom The Bell Tolls for the uninitiated. There were plenty of partisans that had cojones just like our dear Rodney.

Man you really missed something. Like missing Jack Dyer or Big Carl. Serious dudes who made the ground shake. Menace in every footstep. Rod Grinter could seriously play. However he was a very dangerous man when he got an opponent in his sights. Like a bull but he very rarely missed.

Like Leigh Matthews, he was brutal and could also take the biggest hits in his stride. Never seen him go down for the count and plenty tried to nail him. Met him a few times in his playing days at the Harp Of Erin pub in East Kew. Always polite and affable and was often seen running around the local streets keeping fit. His hands were huge like grizzly bear paws and just as dangerous.

Yeah i had a bit of a look and wouldnt recommend watching, so many missed shots AT goal last quarter, just as gut wrenching today as it was then.......

As hard as nails Choke, i loved him, his hip & shoulder on Chris Mew in the 87 prelim is one of the best i have ever seen

Grinter was a great rebound player.

He would hit them so hard they would be knocked out a second time when they rebounded into the ground.

A lot is made of how tough Balls was, but he was also an extremely skillful player. Our halfback line in the late 80's of B.Lovett, G.Lyon and R.Grinter was the envy of all teams in the VFL. Balls could even go forward and play as lead-up forward.

He was a very good footballer.

He was a very good footballer.

Early In his career as a half forward during the last days of the Barassi era he reminded me of a cross between Watts and Howe for skills. Similar build though a little shorter. Had Watts's measured kicking style and Howe's aptitude for a screamer. He could be undisciplined, loose and drifted in and out of games and often with somewhat mistimed aggression ala Tapscott. When Northey came along and shifted to defence his change in attitude was dramatic. Has been crticised for his hardness on man by many but his attack of the ball was just as hard. As I have said before he was one of our most influential players since the sixties and we always seemed to play better when he was on the park. A particular element of enjoyment when watching that lot play would be you could see certain things unfold almost like a trainwreck. There were occasions you would see where the ball was, where Balls was and project the likely course of mayhem You could almost hear bones cracking at times !!

I loved Rod Grinter hard at it, scrupulously fair a wonderful player! Sigh What I would give to have Rod Grinter and Byron Picket in the side right now!

young Rodney had to have treatment for rabies at hospital afterwoods; they removed a couple of poisonous fangs from the wound in the back of his hand.

wonder if he kept them?
