Raiding GWS

The worst aspect of all these mooted trades is that gws will retain picks at the pointy end of the draft to replenish their list if they lose one or two youngsters a year for the next five years, before they start becoming free agents.

It's hard to see them or gc17 getting worse.

My order of preference to target:

- Treloar

- Shiel

- Whitfield

- Kelly

- Coniglio

- Hoskin-Elliott

- Smith

- Greene

- Bugg

The amount of depth they have running through their midfield is scary.

I'm fine with trading high end draft pics for developed, proven young stars. GWS will be the ultimate feeder club. better them than us

Zak Jones seems to be struggling to get a game in the Swans star studded side. I think he could be a great value trade probably only costs a 2nd or 3rd rounder.

I would love to see us do the following this off season:

- Trade our first pick (likely between 2-5) to GWS or Brisbane for one of: Shiel, Treloar, Coniglio or Aish.

- Trade our 3rd round pick for Zak Jones

- Bring in a free agent (thinking Scott Selwood)

- Bring in a decent ruckman (thinking Gorringe or Leunberger)

Why would we want him if he cannot play at AFL level Just because his name is Jones. Does'nt make sence.

Tyson ?

Tyson was a different case. He had hardly played and therefore hadn't cemented a spot in their side unlike Treloar and Shiel. Tyson was also still under contract and we actually head-hunted him and made a very bold move considering the injuries he had during his first couple of seasons.

Treloar and Shiel are currently coming out of contract, will have a host of Victorian clubs lining up and are the best two mids GWS have got and I just don't see why they'd come to us over other Victorian sides who could offer as much money and would be a more attractive destionation as a club.

Surely you can see the differences in scenarios?

Lower clubs have better picks, which is what GWS will want in return for their guns...

I disagree. They'll want ready made AFL players with experience or picks that they can then trade for players like that. Their desire for top draft picks is becoming less and less. All of they're young players who have been there from the start are starting to perform. They'll want more blokes like Patful and Griffen to continue to support and guide their young crop of talented leaders.

The fact he isn't playing is not because he isn't up to AFL standard. It's because he plays in the 2nd best side in the comp. with a deep midfield.

Zac would be best 22 standard at the MFC or still need time at Casey??

Wyl Zac would imo be best 26

Still got some development to come but he'd be pressing for selection and very much fringe, he is good enough to play at AFL level and is more than anything suffering from the quality of the swans list

The pact, the pact.

The core will stay together.

Shiel, Coniglio, Treloar, Hoskins-Wallace, Green, Tomlinson, Cameron will all stay.

There might be some lesser lights available for plucking, but due diligence needs to be done first.

I trust Roos and Goodwin to make that call.

At times, both. His development appears to be tracked patiently at Sydney. They can afford to do that. He'd certainly get plenty of senior games at MFC. Zac has a lot of potential. Maybe he's slipping under the radar because he's playing 2s in an interstate side.

I hope everyone would agree that his family ties would not be the reason we might trade for him.

I'd be surprised if we would be talking about him if it wasn't because of his brother. Or maybe that he has been noticed more by Demon supporters because of his surname.

There is no doubt the fact his brother is our captain would have us slightly more interested. The reason is that it would likely make him more open to moving to play for us than anything else. I know he played some footy in the pre-season and looked right at home. He likes the tough stuff, but seems a bit raw like his brother. At least we know we would get maximum effort and desire to improve.

Yarran Watts

3.7 Contested Possessions Per Game 6.3

You just hate Watts.

no, I don't hate watts at all. I hate the way her goes about his game at the moment.

the idea of that trade scenario is its a like for like !

IMO Yarran has a lot of untapped potential & wants to go (both ways, wants to be a great player: & wants to go as well). I happen to think under Roos'ys methods, Yarren's game will develop. And then Goodwin takes over the methodology.

Shiel will cost more now he's strutting his stuff, & there is a reason he's hot property amongst all the power clubs wishes; ahead of treloar. he is more than just a runner.

I agree they will want ready made players moving forward which will be enticed thru salary cap $$$

& they'll continue topping up their future, via the draft.

You really are deluded. With the possible exception of Watts for Yarran, no-one in their right mind would accept any one of those trades.

Aish is currently overvalued, his value is on speculation.

he has great potential.

& those trade ideas are just loose suggestions as a rough guide taking about 2.5 mins to write.. it is meant to be just thought provoking as to which players we may consider both ways in deals

it isn't a letter to the Mfc recruiting dept' as the basis of a contract offer.

Posted

One player that we might get on the cheap who think will be a great player is Will Hoskin Elliot.

Contract is 2015 but so was another 2 from this article.

http://www.gwsgiants.com.au/news/2013-02-27/the-magnificent-seven

Treloar has already on another level but Hoskin Elliots second half of last year was as promising as anything Shiel has done.

Unfortunately he is unjured atm and light framed but the kid has talent.

We don't know that at all. My brother is utterly unlike me in every way with regards to effort and motivation. Zac could likewise be rather unlike Nate.

Shiel goes out with Mark Williams (Choco) daughter. I reckon if he is going anywhere in Victoria there is a big draw to go to the Tigers. Gotta keep your father in law happy ;)

so we should maybe employ his possible father in law, in our recruiting dept' budget then?

Your on the money big boy. But Tigers first priority is to sign Rance.

Some father-in-laws would give the advice, "go for what you can get"...and some I'd imagine wouldn't want to work with their son-in-laws too.

Shiel will go where he wants to go.

You obviously have never met ex-GWS coach Choco Williams.

Same - there are pros:

- More knowledge of what we are getting (less risk)

- Less time needed developing

- Can target player we need vs taking best available (we need an explosive/outside mid)

As a long suffering demon fan it is hard seeing high picked draftees come in and knowing that they might take 5 years to develop. It will be tough winning a premiership with this list given GC and GWS have a similar premiership window.

Posted

It's undoubtedly going to be tough convincing any of their players to come to us when you'd expect Hawthorn, Sydney, Fremantle and Port to be making similar offers.

We have to show real development this year so that finals are not a mere dream, so that we can offer a young list where they'll slot into the middle and be a part of an upwards trend, rather than slotting into a side where the stars are old and nearing the end, and the side might well be hitting its peak. That's about all we've got, and we can't do that if we don't keep winning and improving.

The four teams you mention only one is in Victoria and that will be the main driver I suspect and not chasing success. I really hope Shiel was watching last nights game. Its important we land one of Shiel, Treloar or Hoskin Elliott as they all have the dash and skill we lack through our midfield.

Good get but meaningless.

Agree with the grin at the end.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
